Oil Analysis Sample Completed

Okay, so I bought my CX-5 used and it has always concerned me that I may have bought a bad car with it being used and not knowing its past. I recently took an oil analysis sample and sent it into Blackstone Laboritories for testing and I'm very pleased with the results. I have been changing the oil on my CX-5 every 7500 miles, which is longer than a lot of people like to do but with it being synthetic it can go longer than regular oil. The lab told me that my engine was in excellent shape with 42,000 miles on it and that I could actually go up to 9000 miles before my next change without any issues! I just wanted to share this with you because I know a lot of people and possibly even the owners manual say to change the oil every 5000 miles and I just wanted to show that it can last a lot longer than that.

What kind of driving; city/highway mix? Also, what kind of synthetic?

I do almost all highway. Probably like 90% highway and a maximum of 10% city. I just use the Mazda brand oil from the dealership.

So there's two factors that are helping you achieve the kind of exemplary results shown in the report. Mostly highway miles and use of (I'm assuming you're referring to) Mazda super moly synthetic. I use the same oil, but my driving is 90% suburban and only about 9k miles/year. That's why I stick to the 5k service interval.

That's why I've always been saving enough money and getting a new car. I've been telling friends that even getting the cheapest new car with a better warranty is better than a used car. Now at least you feel better with a good oil analysis report.

Yes I am referring to the Mazda Molybdenum oil. City driving is really hard on your engine so the highway miles on mine !efinitely do help, like you said.

I refuse to ever buy another new car after seeing the massive hit you take on depreciation if you ever end up getting rid of your car instead of keeping it for years. It happened to me when I bought my WRX and it got T-boned. I would've lost my butt on it of the insurance wouldn't have paid the difference from what the dealer gave me on it for trade. It's risky buying used but you save thousands.

Do you actually see Mazda moly oil with part number "0000-G5-0W20-MQ" printed on your oil change invoice? I'm saying this because Mazda dealers won't use Mazda moly oil unless you specifically ask for it and pay the extra. Some Mazda dealers don't even know there is Mazda moly oil exists!

I use Mazda moly oil and flexible oil change interval which is available on 2016 CX-5. I did the first oil change at 5,073 miles. Now at 9,321 miles the maintenance monitor still says the oil has 70% of oil life left for 4,248 miles driven. It seems I can drive up to 10,000 miles for next oil change according to flexible maintenance monitor!

Yes it is the actual moly oil. It can do amazing things! Lol

Looks like dealer is likely not using the moly oil in your car.

Take a look at my recent test and moly levels in my report.

Yeah, I saw yours before. That's why I was asking... ;)

That looks like it could be a possibility. The unversal average is 178 and I was only at 24. I've stopped using that dealer anyways so maybe I'll have to do another sample from the new dealer to see if they're doing what I'm paying for. Good catch, thanks.

Unless like Kedis82ZE8 and I doing oil change by ourselves, sometimes it's difficult to tell if your Mazda dealer is using the oil you specified. You can't watch the tech doing the oil change. The best way is to ask them leaving the empty oil bottles in the trunk.

Thanks for sharing! That oil seems to be working pretty good for you, even if it isn't the Mazda Moly. If you decide to do another test, please join us on this thread:

It would be interesting to compare samples and have all the samples in one place so that its easier to find. Seeing sample like this makes me wonder: does the extra MoS2 make that big of a difference?

I didn't even realize there was already a thread about it. I'll have to search before I post next time. I wonder the same thing because I was obviously not getting the added Molybdenum in my oil, like I was supposed to be.

The oil your dealer is using is NOT the Mazda Moly oil. I can guarantee that and your oil analysis proves that. Moly oil would have a range of around 500-600. Yours is in the 20's.

The Mazda dealer told me that they use bulk barrel oil when changing oil in SkyActiv engines. They will NOT and do NOT use the Moly oil. He said the bulk oil is usual Castrol Synthetic but sometimes mechanics use the bulk conventional on accident if they are not paying attention or if the tech is not experienced.

Remember, when you take your car into the dealership they don't make the Master Tech change the oil. He is working on complex repairs. They give your car to the 20 year old guy who rotates tires, parks cars and is not a certified tech. If he's not paying attention he will get oil from the bulk conventional barrel, not synthetic. If they use synthetic then they will use Castrol synthetic.

Most dealers will use whatever the cheapest oil they can find. You're lucky if your Mazda dealer uses Castrol bulk oil. This "Preferred Choice" oil is used by my Mazda dealer if you don't ask for Mazda moly oil and pay additional for it.

Ha! Preferred Choice. (notcool)

It's probably just the cheapest stuff they can buy with the "synthetic" label
