BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept is a 356hp Plug-in Hybrid Turbo-Diesel

p90047157_highres-1280.jpg

BMW has kept the world guessing about a concept car that would epitomize the company’s corporate Efficient Dynamics philosophy and now it is here. The new car is mean-looking 2+2 sports car that uses both a turbo-diesel three-cylinder engine as well as two electric motors in a full plug-in hybrid layout. BMW says the goal of the project was to build a vehicle that has the performance of one of its M cars, while delivering fuel-economy that is superior to current small cars. This they most certainly achieved with a 0-62 mph time of 4.8 seconds and a claimed fuel economy figure of 62.6 mpg.

The diesel engine used is essentially half of that found in the current BMW 335d, displacing 1.5-liters. On its own the diesel makes 163hp and 214 ft-lbs of torque. The car also gets BMW’s impressive six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Two electric motors are paired to this engine, which is located in a mid-rear configuration. A 33hp motors sits between the engine and transmission while a second 80-hp motor delivers power to the front axle. The result it a total of 356hp and 590 ft-lbs of torque. Storing that energy is a lithium-polymer battery pack that runs down the center of the car for optimum weight distribution.

BMW says the Vision EfficientDynamics Concept can be plugging in a charged at a conventional outlet in just 2.5 hours and can travel up to 31 miles on pure electric power. A 6.6 gallon diesel tank will then allow an extended range of 400 miles.

To keep the weight of the vehicle to a minimum, BMW engineers build the chassis and suspension entirely out of aluminum, meaning the car weights just 3,076 lbs. Engineers also worked hand-in-hand with the designers to create the body of the concept, with a light weight polycarbonate body that boasts a aerodynamic drag coefficient of just 0.22 cd. BMW says part of the reason for the impressive aerodynamics is due to their ability to work on the front end of the car, made possible by moving the engine to the rear. New thermostatically controlled slats in front of the radiator can also close at speed to redirect air around the car when cooling isn’t a top priority.

In addition, on of the vehicles most progressive technologies is what BMW calls “Forward looking energy management.” BMW hopes that by using technology to forsee what is coming on the road ahead it can save energy by shutting down or powering up other systems. An example would be using the radar system built into the active cruise control to see when traffic is slowing down ahead, and then shut of the car’s engine while activating the regenerative braking ahead of time.

There’s not reason to think BMW will ever build this car, but we should expect many of the technologies shown here to make it into production cars in the not-too-distant future. The BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept will officially be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show on September 15th.

Fiat previews new Frankfurt-bound Punto Evo

PRESS RELEASE:

World debut: The Fiat Punto Evo makes its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show

The Fiat Punto Evo, the evolution of the Grande Punto, will make its debut at the next Frankfurt Motor Show. It is destined to repeat the success of its predecessor and become the new pacesetter for innovation, safety and style, thanks to its many innovative features.

The epithet "Evo" identifies a level of car design that is capable of satisfying even the most demanding customers in terms of technology, driving pleasure and respect for the environment.

The Punto Evo expresses its technical excellence first and foremost through a wide choice of Euro 5 engines, including a 1.3 second generation Multijet diesel and a 1.4 petrol engine with the revolutionary MultiAir technology developed by Fiat Powertrain Technologies and eventually to be incorporated in all Fiat Group engines. Fiat's innovative and conventional powerplants are also joined by dual-fuel methane and petrol units to create the most complete and ecological range of engines in the segment. With reduced consumption and emissions in mind, the new Punto Evo also offers Start&Stop, the system that switches off and restarts the engine in stop-and-go traffic. Start&Stop is being introduced as standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines. Another system making its first appearance on the Punto Evo is "Blue&MeTomTom", the new portable satellite navigation unit that lets you manage telephone, navigation and information functions on a practical colour touch-screen.

In the area of safety, the Punto Evo sets new standards thanks to 7 airbags, including a driver knee airbag. The Punto Evo is one of very few cars in its segment with a driver knee airbag fitted as standard on all versions. Other innovative safety systems are also available, including Hill-Holder to help with hill starts, adaptive 'cornering' front fog lights that switch on automatically with dipped headlights according to the angle of steering, and Fiat's tried and tested ABS, EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution) and ESP (Electronic Stability Program) systems.

Finally, the new Punto Evo is even more attractive thanks to the work of Fiat's Centro Stile. The interiors (fascia, seats and instrumentation) have been completely renewed to become even more prestigious and elegant, and the outside has been given a thoroughly restyled look too.

The Fiat Punto Evo goes on sale in the second half of October with the precise objective of consolidating its role as one of Europe's market leaders in the highly important compact segment.
Technical innovation

The Punto Evo expresses its technical excellence first and foremost through a wide choice of engines Euro 5, including petrol units equipped with the revolutionary MultiAir system and second generation Multijet diesels.

Developed and patented by FPT Fiat Powertrain Technologies MultiAir technology will gradually be adopted by all engines fitted to Fiat Group cars. The heart of MultiAir is a new electrohydraulic valve management system that reduces fuel consumption by controlling air directly via the inlet valves (without using the throttle). MultiAir reduces emissions (thanks to improved combustion control) and also improves performance by boosting both power and torque.

Similar results have been achieved in diesel versions thanks to the adoption of second generation Multijet units across the range. These engines incorporate new common rail injectors that, thanks to a balanced hydraulic servo-valve, control the quantity of fuel injected into the combustion chamber with improved precision, and in a faster and more flexible sequence than in the past.

The choice of engines available for the Punto Evo is the most complete and ecological in this market segment, and even includes two alternative fuel engines, a methane and an LPG unit.

The new Punto Evo is even equipped with the latest version of the Blue&Me system. "Blue&MeTomTom" is a fully integrated infotainment system that lets you manage telephone, navigation and information functions on a practical colour touch-screen. The system is the result of a partnership between Fiat Group Automobiles and TomTom, European leader in portable navigation systems, and integrates with the car's other systems thanks to the Blue&Me system developed in conjunction with Magneti Marelli. The new system also incorporates "eco:Drive Info" for real time information on your driving style and useful suggestions for reducing environmental impact and optimising consumption by changing gear and using the accelerator to suit the nature of the route.

Respect for the environment

At Fiat, innovation means greater respect for the environment too. In fact, the environment is one of the main issues driving product development, and ensures that the Fiat range is the greenest in Europe. The Punto Evo is no exception to this rule.
The new MultiAir engines prove the point. Compared to a conventional petrol engine of the same size, a MultiAir engine develops more power (up to 10%) and torque (up to 15%), while consuming significantly less (up to 10%) and emitting less CO2 (up to 10%), less particulates (up to 40%) and less NOx (up to 60%).

In the same way the second generation of Multijet diesel engines also offers more accurate combustion, with benefits for consumption, emissions, NVH and drivability. This has been achieved through a new common rail injector that modulates fuel injection into the combustion chamber and gives, for the Euro 5 engines, an improvement of around 2% in consumption and CO2 emissions on the homologation cycle, and a reduction in NOx emissions of up to 30%.

Still with reduced consumption and emissions in mind, the new Punto Evo will also offer Start&Stop, the system that switches off the engine when you stop and restarts it for you to move off again (at traffic lights for example). Start&Stop will be standard on all Euro5 petrol and diesel engines.

The methane-fuelled engine is not only the most ecological dual fuel engine in segment B, producing only 115 g/km of CO2, but is also the most economical thanks to record running costs of under 4 Euros per 100 km. Among other advantages, methane-fuelled engines benefit from the highest government incentives in Italy: 5,000 Euros if combined with a contribution for scrapping your old car.

Then there is the LPG-fuelled version, developed using Fiat's longstanding experience in alternative fuels to respond to the extraordinary growth seen in this market. The Punto Evo GPL boasts record autonomy of 1,500 km in the extra-urban cycle, and running costs up to 50% lower than a petrol equivalent.
Safety

The Punto Evo is designed and built to achieve the highest levels of safety. The model boasts a large number of safety systems (standard or optional depending on market and version) starting from those dedicated to passive safety: 2 front airbags, 2 front side airbags, 2 window bags and a driver knee airbag (the Punto Evo is one of the few cars in this segment on which this device is standard on all versions).

The Punto Evo is also one of the few cars in its class equipped with adaptive 'cornering' front fog lights that switch on automatically with dipped headlights according to the angle of steering. And don't forget that the new Punto Evo also guarantees constant and reliable road holding thanks to electronic dynamic control systems for braking and steering. The ABS system that is available across the complete engine range incorporates EBD (Electronic Brake force Distribution), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and Hill-holder to help with hill-starts.

Style and comfort

The Punto Evo is more stunning than ever thanks to the work of Fiat's Centro Stile. In particular, the interiors of the new model have been completely redesigned to represent the most evolved expression of Italian style, with top quality materials and superb attention to detail. The result is a bright and elegant cabin with completely renewed fascia, seats, storage compartments and instrumentation.

On the outside, both the front and the rear have been thoroughly restyled, as shown by the attractive lines of the new bumpers and the incorporation of innovative and original headlights and taillights. The latest design has also "stretched" the car to a total length of 406 centimetres, so that its winning characteristics of driver and passenger comfort remain unchanged. The other external dimensions remain the same, with a width of 169 cm, a height of 149 cm and a wheelbase of 251 cm.

Limited-edition Porsche 911 Sport Classic marks return of the ducktail

Porsche has been building limited-edition 911s almost as long as it has been building the rear-engined wundercar, and the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show will see the launch of yet another. The new 911 Sport Classic you see before you has been tweaked by Stuttgart's Porsche Exclusive in-house customizing department, and suddenly our upcoming trip to Germany looks a lot brighter.

Fortunately for enthusiasts, when Porsche says special, they mean it this far more than just a tape and body kit job. Changes to the Sport Classic Grey model start at the nose with a revised fascia and take off from there. Up top, the roof panel receives a double-bubble treatment: a pair of domes above the driver and passenger with a channel down the middle. At the rear, the ducktail spoiler from the legendary the Carrera RS 2.7 makes its first appearance on a modern 911 and is flanked by even wider rear fenders to enclose the SC's extended track.

Porsche has seen fit to include some mechanical goodness as well. Under that charismatic ducktail, a new intake manifold with flaps that control the runner lengths adds 23 horsepower to the normally aspirated flat-six, bringing the headcount to 403. Carbon ceramic brakes are enclosed in special Fuchs-style 19-inch wheels designed that evoke the last 911SC of the late Seventies and early Eighties, and the whole package lurks closer to the ground thanks to the inclusion of PASM sport suspension.

The interior hasn't been ignored either, with various bits being finished in Espresso Nature natural leather and the use of new materials to the marque, including woven leather/yarn seat panels.

Of course, also following firmly in company tradition is the Sport Classic's premium price. Just 250 examples will be built and we don't imagine Porsche will have any trouble clearing its decks even though it is priced at a tidy 169,300 ($240,702 USD) before any applicable value added taxes. It may be extraordinarily dear, but we still want one in the worst way. It isn't immediately clear if the 911 SC will be made available in the U.S., but either way, Porsche is seemingly aware that we don't have that many spare samoleans rolling around in our bank accounts. As such, Porsche Design Driver's Selection has thoughtfully developed a line of accessories inspired by the new SC, including a polo shirt, cap, a 1:43 scale diecast, and wait for it a personalized lanyard. Perhaps we can afford one of those.

holy sexy interior on the porsche...i'm pretty sure that sweet chocolate love filled interior would make me melt away into the pure awesomeness that is porsche

I want that BMW!! It's about time someone realized the benefits of a turbo-diesel hybrid.

can we get SEAT please?

They are sold south of the border, same fancy stuff but with a more aggressive design than the cousin VWs, yet the build quality feels lower

I drove a 2yr old SEAT Leon Cupra (2005, 2006?) sometime ago and the turbo and handling were sweet, but with rattles and squeaks all over. My buddy also told me all these stories about things braking and stuff (notcool)

Not that the roads helped much, LOL, but still I've seen better...

Volkswagen to unveil bluemotion polo, golf and passat production models

What would be technically feasible if money were no object? What is the maximum fuel economy that a truly affordable car could attain? And how clean would its emissions be? Are there cars that can be purchased today that are already eco-friendly for the world of tomorrow? Is it possible for a car optimised for fuel efficiency to be just as uncompromisingly practical in everyday driving?

These questions are becoming increasingly important to more and more people. On September 15, at the International Motor Show (IAA) in Frankfurt, Volkswagen will be showing what is feasible when the best available yet affordable technologies of our times are sensibly combined in the new generation of the Polo BlueMotion, Golf BlueMotion and Passat BlueMotion. All three Volkswagens are the worlds most fuel-efficient models in their respective size classes; all three are celebrating world premieres as production versions at the IAA; and all three can be ordered later this fall.

Polo with 3.3 litre fuel economy: The new Polo BlueMotion (55 kW / 75 PS) with an average fuel consumption of just 3.3 litres diesel (equivalent to 87 g/km CO2!) per 100 kilometres is advancing to become the 3-liter fuel economy car of the modern era and the most fuel efficient five-seater in the world. Compared to a conventional Polo TDI with 75 PS, CO2 emissions were reduced 20 percent, and fuel consumption was reduced by 0.9 litre per 100 kilometres thanks to BlueMotion*Technologies that include a new high-tech 1.2-liter TDI. They make the commute to work, vacation trip and long weekend affordable again. A person driving a Polo BlueMotion from Berlin to the IAA in Frankfurt, for example, can cover the 545 kilometre route for just 19 Euros* in fuel costs. Refueling becomes an afterthought, since the 45 litre tank of the Polo BlueMotion leverages a theoretical range of 1,363 kilometres. One more example related to costs: According to the German Federal Bureau of Statistics, the average German car driver drives a total of 11,000 kilometres per year. For Polo BlueMotion drivers this means that they can cruise the entire year on just eight fuel fill-ups and 377 Euros* in fuel costs. The Polo BlueMotion, which can move at 173 km/h if necessary, makes its market debut in 2010.

Golf with 3.8 litre fuel economy: Motoring at a cost level practically as pleasing as that of the Polo is the new Golf BlueMotion (77 kW / 105 PS). Thanks to its fuel consumption of just 3.8 litres diesel (99 g/km CO2), it is the worlds most fuel-efficient car in its class. Its theo*retical range is 1,447 kilometres (55 litre tank). Average annual fuel costs: just 439 Euros or about 37 Euros* per month

The most fuel-efficient Golf of all times is powered by a new, quiet common rail turbo-diesel. Like all TDIs, this engine does not lack in power by any measure. Just the opposite is true: The 105 PS sixteen-valve, four-cylinder engine generates its maximum torque of 250 Newton-Meters at a low 2,000 rpm. Equipped with these key performance parameters, the engine accelerates the Golf BlueMotion to 100 km/h in just 11.3 seconds. Its top speed: 190 km/h. The new Golf BlueMotion will first arrive at European dealers in late fall of this year.

Passat with 4.4 litre fuel economy: The driving range of the new Passat BlueMotion may just be record-setting. With an average fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres diesel (114 g/km CO2) per 100 kilometres, it can cover 1,591 kilometres on one fill-up of its 70 litre tank! That adds up to just seven fill-ups per year. Cost point: 502 Euros*. There is no other car of this size on the road today that is more fuel-efficient. Advance orders start in early October, and the new Passat BlueMotion will be at dealers one month later as a saloon and an estate car. The Passat shares its 77 kW / 105 PS common rail TDI with the Golf BlueMotion. A look at the Passats superior performance data reveals the tremendous potential of this engine and the aerodynamic properties of the Passat: 193 km/h top speed and 12.5 seconds for the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h.

TDI + Start-Stop + Regeneration: The BlueMotionTechnolo*gies aboard the three super-economizers make up a comprehensive package of extremely diverse high-tech components and detailed solutions. Building the foundation for the extremely low fuel consumption and emission values of these cars are their new common rail TDI engines with modified engine management software and reduced idling speed. Power transfer is handled by five-speed gearboxes with longer gear ratios. A gear-shift indicator integrated in the instruments ensures that the BlueMotion models are always driven at the gear stage that is optimal for fuel economy.

Other BlueMotion features include energy recovery (regenerative braking), a Start-Stop system (automatic engine shutoff, such as at red lights), tyres optimized for low rolling resistance, especially lightweight low-drag wheels, improved fine tuning of body aerodynamics and a lower chassis (Polo and Golf). In addition, the new BlueMotion models are distinguished from other versions of their respective model lines by stylish modifications and a customized interior. For the first time, Volkswagen and this represents a clear reversal of market trends is giving its BlueMotion models dynamic styling features that bridge the gap between sustainability and sporty appeal. The Golf and Passat, for example, are making their appearance with bumpers and side skirts from the avant-garde R-Line; the Polo meanwhile is distinguished by such features as completely new radiator grille styling and special alloy wheels. The Polo and Passat Estate also have an independent rear tailgate spoiler.

Pricing is not left out of the equation by any means, and it is consistent with our declared goal of offering very advanced eco-friendly cars at affordable prices. And BlueMotion is certainly affordable.

Ford teases 2011 five-seat C-Max people mover ahead of Frankfurt debut

2010-ford-cmax-5-seat-630.jpg

Ford has just released a few images of its next-generation C-Max tall hatchback ahead of the model's Frankfurt Motor Show debut, and we're as intrigued as much by what lurks under its hard candy shell as we are with its Iosis Max-derived styling. You see, the EurOval's handsome C-Max "compact multi-activity vehicle" is built on the company's new global C-platform architecture the very same chassis that will underpin the next Focus that arrives in late 2010.

Ford is not yet disclosing much about its new Euro-market model, but the 2011 C-Max will be powered by a new 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder. Like the larger EcoBoost powerplants available in Ford's U.S. products, that means that the little I4 will be equipped with turbocharging and direct-injection for better power and fuel efficiency. No output figures for the engine have been released yet, but we suspect Ford will release horsepower and torque numbers (and further information) when the car rolls out in Frankfurt later this month.

Those wishing to purchase the C-Max will have some time to think about whether they're interested in plumping for options like the promised blind-spot detection system or the semi-self parking feature, because the model isn't slated to hit EU dealer forecourts until the second half of 2010.

As this five-seater isn't slated to come to the States at all, the rest of us will just have to slake our curiosity on the high-res images below and the press release after the jump.

Mazda 1st Japanese automaker to successfully equip a passenger vehicle with SCR

mazda-cx-7-clean-diesel.jpg

HIROSHIMA, Japan Mazda Motor Corporation will exhibit freshened CX-7 SUVs with European specifications at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show, which will be held from September 15 through 27, 2009.*1 Newly added to the updated CX-7 lineup and to be exhibited at the Frankfurt Show is a version powered by Mazdas MZR-CD 2.2 liter diesel engine mated to a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system.

SCR systems substantially reduce nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions, which helps the diesel CX-7 to achieve outstanding eco-friendly performance that complies with strict Euro5 emissions regulations. The clean-running diesel CX-7 will be launched in Europe in October 2009, with Australian sales following in November.

Mazdas SCR system purifies vehicle exhaust gases by spraying AdBlue*2 aqueous urea directly into the exhaust flow in front of the catalytic converter. Through a chemical reaction, the urea converts approximately 40 percent*3 of nitrous oxides into harmless nitrogen. Previously, the large size of SCR systems limited their use to trucks and buses. By reducing the size and weight of the system components, which include an AdBlue storage tank fitted under the luggage area, Mazda is the first Japanese automaker to successfully equip a passenger vehicle with an SCR system.

Even with the added components, the diesel powered CX-7 offers the same 455 liters of luggage space (VDA approved*4) as gasoline engine models. Additionally, Mazdas SCR system was designed to minimize consumption of AdBlue, enabling the clean diesel CX-7 to run for 20,000 kilometers between refills under normal driving conditions.

*1 The Frankfurt Motor Show is officially titled the 63rd Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA); press days are September 15 and 16, and the public days are September 17 through 27.

*2 AdBlue is a form of aqueous urea and a registered trademark of the Verband der Automobilindustrie e.V. (VDA)

*3 Compared to a clean diesel CX-7 with no SCR system under the New European Driving Cycle test conditions
