Official 'Smoking Turbo' response from Mazda

you should do it in front of a bunch of environmental tree huggers. theyre ****** nuts and will fight the battle for you

Honestly, you might be on to something there. I wonder if anyone has contacted any environmental groups for extra support.

This is becoming sort of interesting.
I was over at my mazda dealership trying to figure out my personal problem with the oil filter socket wrench. I saw the Service writer who was nice and my sales guy who still remembers me from 3 years ago. Yes i do make an impression. lol
Then i looked at the Porsche Panamera s. And after i drove i away i thought, i really should have asked about what kind of issues they have had with turbos and pcv. They know i am not looking for a replacement because i have told them i am going Garrett in good time. So maybe i really should support you guys and see what they will tell me. My car is too far gone to even consider a warranty claim so maybe the guys will tell me something. These are the same folks who replaced and reflashed my fuel pump even after i was well modded.
Would that be of any help here?

I'm speaking for myself here, but I'd certainly would appreciate any info you could offer up :)

If you want to make a splash start with a petition and send it to Mazda NA corporate. The dealers are ruled by corporate so you are taking your frustration out on the wrong people. In most case they would like to help you but with out the go ahead of corporate they can't cover you. Start a petition get 1k+ signatures and you might start to get the ball rolling. If you can get more than that you will get the ball rolling. The MS6 is a much smaller group than the MS3 and CX7. Getting them involved is a great idea, now get a petition going across the many owners forums on the net and you might have a chance. Until then, leave the dealerships alone. Don't blame them for a corporate decision.

Riddle me this...

Second time this has happened. Car was parked for about five hours. Drive for about 10 minutes and while stopped at a traffic light I start to smell oil burning. I look in my rearview and side mirrors, yup...that dreaded turbo blue smoke. Then I drive home and let it idle for 10 minutes. Not a trace of smoke. It frustrates me because the chances of me replicating it for the dealer is a crapshoot.

Is there a reason I see/smell the smoke at idle after the car has been sitting for a while? When I want to replicate it, it doesn't. Just that the last two times I've seen it occur was after a few minutes of driving (normally, not hammering it) after the car had cooled off for a few hours.

I've also let the car idle for 15 minutes on two occasions and nothing. I'm running 5W-40 Rotella Synthetic.

So I experienced the smoking for the first time today. Smelled it first, looked in the rearview and couldn't see the car behind me. I thought it was interesting since I had literally just gotten the oil changed. Pulled over and checked my oil level...waaay to high. Brought it back to the shop and they drained and refilled correctly. The tech that normally does my oil changes was out n some $onkey did it. Took it for 100 mile trip today and the smoking seems to have stopped. Hopefully it doesn't come back :/

I am going a little crazy myself with this. I spent all weekend driving all kinds of conditions trying to get smoke. I can smell it for sure.
But i have not seen any smoke under conditions. I have let it idle from cold start ( that is how it happened the first time!) idle from a hard running. slow cruising start and stop etc etc.
I did just do an oil change and i did overfill abit? And as you all probably know i have the Pill.
So this is were i am headed on this. I am going to replace the turbo seals with a rebuild.
But i need a little help finding a rebuild kit. Any suggestions?

its very easy to overfill these cars, since the owners manual tells you more oil is needed than actually is. be sure that when doing your own oil change that you watch the dipstick after the 5th quart, since it really only needs ~5.5 qts, not the 6 the manual says (about .5 qt sits in the pan undrained)

smoke is back, thicker than ever, oil level has dropped a bit. its not even an idle smoke. i can let it idle for 20 min and nothing. blip the throttle and holy s*** call the fire brigade

Mine takes pretty much exactly 6 quarts to get to the halfway point between the two lines on the dipstick...

Yes once the turbo starts spinning and the pressure/vacuum changes.
I was thinking that the first time it smoked on a cold start it idled a good ten minutes which got it hot enough that the puddled oil reached burning temperature. I revved it and even more smoke then gone.
The other time i was driving normal, for me, and after the highway i had some stop and go. Then pulled in Deltasonic for a wash. The car started smoking right after i purchased the drive through wash and right until i had the car dried.
It really just make your heart sink.
on a side bar i found a tuning shop with a Mustang dyno. Oooh neat. right under my nose almost but new shop.
It is called Street Tuned Motorsports STM rochester google.
They have some neat stuff and some serious cars.
Just something to brighten up a dreary thread. Take a look folks for some fun.

Brought in my car today. There was oil leaking at the rear main seal. They're gonna overnight the parts needed to remedy the situation under warranty. You guys might want to check the area between your oil pan and tranny to see if you have this same problem - it's somewhat common from my research. I've read at least five or six threads between the three forums of others having this same issue. Just an FYI next time you have your car up on ramps or jackstands :)

They're also trying to replicate the smoking turbo. They haven't had success yet (although it randomly did for me the other night at a stop light) today, but if they do, they'll call the Mazda Tech line to get the process started on me getting a new turbo perhaps? They know I'm running 5W-40 and have receipts of me doing my own oil changes.

Should have the car back tomorrow afternoon. I'm hoping they'll be able to see some smoke between now and then. If not, then at least they'll have a record of me bringing it in for this issue.

did they question you about your oil changes immediately?

Nope. They've serviced my MS3 four times prior to today (free alignment, windshield cowl TSB, idle stumbling TSB, and a complimentary oil change). I told the service writer that 5W-40 was alreadyin the engine and he took my word for it. The service manager and writer remember me from those previous visits and have gone over and beyond to help me out.

I filled out the Mazda survey in the mail and gave them bad reviews the first time I brought it in for alignment. They had left my car super dirty, broke two clips, and my JDM air freshner. The SM called me a few days after I mailed it in and apologized. She said that negative reviews really hurt their chances of getting that Mazda Star award (or whatever it is they call it) and since they've received it four years in-a-row, they'll pretty much do anything in their power to attain that status.

k thanks, im just wondering if i should go in there and play dumb or show up with the oil receipts in hand....

Well, they really didn't need to question me much about the rear main seal. It was an obvious problem that they had no problem saying they'll fix.

I'm still expecting a call saying they couldn't replicate the turbo smoke. But if they do, then I'm sure they'll get into more detail about asking me about the oil changes/maintenance.

mine makes a nice good puff of blue smoke after sitting overnight. so im gonna drive around tonite to get the ecu back in check, park it in front of the dealer tonite, and start it right in front of them in the morning

Good luck Hank! thank you for the report from all of us waiting for a strong dealership response. I wonder if video or a good picture would at least help identify it as oil smoke by color.
The randomness of the issue in my car is a mystery to me for sure.
And thanks for the heads up about the main seal i will take a look. That would be important to me.
8.5 that sounds like your best bet for creating smoke and good luck to you too sir

Good luck bud. Hopefully the turbo fairy doesn't come around in the middle of the night and cure your issue. I hate it when I go in for warranty work and can't replicate the problem.

now the b**** isnt smoking. **** this car. im gonna stick a garden hose up the exhaust and get some water in the resonators. ****** bulls***.
