Official NEPOC Spring Cleaning Thread

Ok guys, I'm gonna try to change out the coolant and tranny fluid at the meet tomorrow. Since I've never done this before I need to know what to purchase (best product for each, how many quarts, etc). Also, will Autozone have any kind of special catch bucket or should I just get something at walmart?

Oh, and Happy Friday the 13th ooooo

Autozone and wal-mart (don't you dare shop at wal-mart :D) should both carry the catch can that can be sealed up for transportation to proper dumping sites. I have a couple that hold 15 quarts each.

For coolant, 2 gallons if I recall correctly (I'm assuming this is for your wife's car, not your new one). I recommend the Prestone (think that's the company) animal-safe coolant in the white bottle. I don't think it comes pre-mixed though, so just buy a gallon of the concentrate (about 10 dollars I think). Gear oil seems to be between 2 and 3 quarts, and I gotta say I've been incredibly happy with the Royal Purple "max gear" 75w90 synthetic* gear oil that I'm currently using. I've also had good luck with the Redline MT90 synthetic gear oil, and in a pinch (i.e. when I arrived at the headlight painting meet with no gear oil in my car at all o_O) I've used the Mobil1 (I'm going to hell for buying ExxonMobil products :( ) 75w90 and it seemed just fine too.

*no Royal Purple product is a true synthetic made from PAO base stock, it's hydrocracked molecularly modified dino base stock. Hence I now swear by Redline oils. In theory, Mobil1 is still a true PAO synthetic although with it's relatively low pricing compared to Redline, people have suspected that it no longer is (no proof of this). Amsoil is another brand that offers a true synthetic, but they also market a hydrocracked oil as "synthetic". One of their lines is called "full synthetic" or "100% synthetic" or something along those lines, it's the real deal PAO one.

As for anything else you might need, if I remember to, I can bring the apparatus I bought in Massachusetts to fill it. It just screws on to the gear oil bottle and gives you an on/off valve and a long hose. It helps greatly to reduce spillage during the fill. The fill port on the transmission is right on the front, with a placement and angle that makes it impossible to fill without at least a funnel with attached hose (think beer bong.. though I personally have no experience with one of those).

I have a quart of Mobil1 75W90 left over from when I changed my P5 tranny fluid. You can have it.

NEPOC offers you protection. What are the papers on. We can help with that too!

Thanks for the info Chris, and yes this is for my wife's car...since mine is still at the body shop. Anyone know what they call that tranny filling apperatus? I'm not sure I want to walk into Autozone and ask for a "beer bong" thingy...although I'm sure they would know exactly what I was talking about.

For the P5 I simply used a clear hose and attached it to the bottle. Worked great. I can bring that to if you like.

^^^Just dropped $30 in Autozone last night.....4" c-clamp, set of allen wrenches (larger than the ones I already had), 4 packs of caliper lube and red threadlocker (do you guys recommend using this??).

That should be fine Mark. We'll need a designated washing area so that it's not near other cars.

Please bring it, in case I don't find anything at Autozone...or it ends up costing too much. Thx

I'll bring the one I have here. The P5 can handle it, it's got the cargo space (yes)

Someone should bring a portable pop-up show tent so in case it rains we can continue to detail 3 cars at a time (lol2)

No, but I can bring some Utica Club or Saranac, both made in my hometown!

Utica Club was the first beer officially sold after Prohibition :D

ya, i think the best spot for washing might be the grass, then move the cars to the driveway for the cleaning?? the grass will soak up all the water and the driveway will stay dry! cars needing to be worked on mechanicaly can be in or in front of the garage....thoughts?

Sounds good to me. Are you going to have a reflective vest and orange flag to direct everyone :)

I only have a really short hose but I do have a nozzle I'll bring in case you need an extra.

Since my car doesn't need any work done on it (well I should probably you know.. fix my e-brake so it works, but I should do that before driving all those hours anyway) I call street parking (again)! w00t.
