OEM Brake Squeal - Normal?

My MS3 has just under 20k miles on it and I have been experiencing fairly loud brake squeal when coming to a stop. Pads and rotors seem fine. It seems rather loud. Yes, I already performed several searches and have discovered we have Ferodo performance pads and performance pads do squeal some.

What I want is some input on if this is normal and has been experienced by anyone else???

Often, brake shops will remove the brake pads and roughen the surface, as glazing can often be the culprit. You might try that.

I had a loud squeal about a month ago, I knew my pads were brand new so I pulled the wheel. It ended up being a stone stuck between the rotor and the backing plate. It sounded just the the brake pad squealer.

Sometimes, it seems to go away once the brakes are good and warmed up, but I dunno...

Maybe I will get the pads sanded.

Depending how you drive the car, 20K is pretty good for the front pads (mine wore out at 11K). You can't go by looks - there's a very thick layer of backing material between the friction material and the backing plate, so it looks like you have lots of life left but you don't...

Also, they wear unevenly. The leading edge of the inside front pads wear faster, but it's almost impossible to measure without taking the pads out. When mine went at 11K, the outside front pads measured 6mm at the center of the pad, where it's easy to measure. But when I removed the pads, the inside was just starting to eat into the backing material.

Oh, and when I replaced them, the squeak went away.

kwsmith: thank you, i will head down to the dealer to get them checked out completely!

So even though the stock pads on my 08 MS3 says "ATE", they are Ferodo's?

Ate backing plates, with Ferodo friction material on the fronts.
If you order new OEM pads the boxes will say:

The front OEM pads say Lining maker Ferodo, Lining Type 4209.
The rears say Lining Maker Akebono. Lining Type NS530

They should not squeak or squeal, if they do you have a problem of some sort, either wear or contamination, or inadequate lube/anti squeal.
