Octane boosting?

with gas prices on the rise and with them going to get higher, who on here is octane boosting regualar unleaded? does anybody have any experience boosting with toluene?

i am considering boosing octane and would like to know who else is doing it and what problems could possibly arise if any

im still doing the math on the ammounts needed to bring the octane to the equivalant of 93 octane or better but not extremely high, and how cost effective it would even be

i just figured i would buy premium cause it is only like $2.50 more to fill up with it and octane booster costs around the same. and i don't feel like trying to figure out how much to put in and what not so i just keep on paying that 20 cents more a gallon. i just hope it don't go up to 4 bucks a gallon like predicted.

jeez, put water/meth injection system, it would boost a fair amount of octane on pump gas. you can achieve 100+oct from 87 oct easily.

ok so after playing arround with the octane calculator, if you will,
boosting octane really isnt as cost effective as i thought it would be

but in the event gas jumps to the 4+ dollars they expect it too then ill definitly be making a trip to the hardwear store

methenol injection is key. When the car is not being boosted you are running on regular fuel. Only when you are beating on the car do you use the methenol. Puts you in a "pay to play" position. As long as you dont play alot you will save in the longrun and dont have to go looking for 92+ octane at the pumps. Dont put anything lower then 91 in unless you have a way to monitor events in the chamber (EX: EGT gauge, JandS safeguard etc.) and really know what you are doing. 9:1 compression + boost = a need for 91 at the minimum without the devices i mentioned. I try to only put 94 in mine, even with the methenol injection.

If you just put in lower octane fuel the knock threshold will change and your ecu will dump more fuel and retard timing to try and make up for your lack of octane. This will result in worse mileage. Either take off the turbo, or invest in a good EMS if you are serious. (but of course the cost of this offsets any potential fuel savings and then some).

With water-methanil injection, a 50/50 mix will increase your octane 25% over the base fuel. So during injection 93 octane will be like C116 race fuel.

Best regards,

Dan

unless you have a way to monitor the events in the chamber, you are risking your motor over paying an extra 2 cents per liter. Ive had plenty of injection setups on the fsde, its hard getting mixture distributed perfectly. Not impossible, but it can be tough. just dont cheap out on the proper gauges and knock countermeasures, last thing you want is a fancy paperweight.

With a proper atomizing system, your inlet air will get "saturated" with the mix. If there was a distribution problem, you would also be having an air flow distribution problem.

We also offer a monitoring box for W/M, the IFS-10. If the flow of the system ever stops, the 12V fault trigger output can be used to pull you to wastegate spring pressure, or switch maps in an aftermarket ECU.

From managing an auto parts store, at least on our shelves the octane boosters started at around $6 and said boost of upto 10 points, but the fine print said 10 points for us is equal to around 1 octane point. So $6 for under 1 octane point. Not worth it to me.

As for injection, sounds great for racing. But for day to day driving, if you are serious about setting up a system like that for when you are boosting so that you can run a lower octane..... dude, seriously, trade in your car for a fit or something fuel efficient.

(shrug)
i dont really care n e more....for the miles i put on the car every day to and from school and work on the weekends any money i would save would just be offset by increase in miles i do

so im not even gunna bother

I would never octane boost regular gas...just better off paying for 93 or 94 (sunoco is the only one in my area with octane this high)...

So basically that site that Funkrider listed is saying that if I added 10% of rubbing alcohol to my gas tank i would raise the octane in the tank? If so, is this going to be harmfull to my engine or anything?
