Nopi Or Bust

Well I will definatlly be living up to those words. We fixed the leak in my manifold by using a stock manifold gasket, and after that we put a bronze high heat manifold gasket on, and wala no leaks. So I will be breaking the turbo in on the way to Georgia tomorrow. I am thinking about hooking up my water cooling lines to my turbo before I go, does anyone know about this system?

Ooh and Terry to answer your question about when my car is at full boost, its 2500 rpms. The tires break loose for a moment at 3100 rpms. But no wheel hop, I have done this in rain and shine at 5 psi and the same results.

I do not have time to get any pics before NOPI but I will get them up after NOPI.

See you guys there(bluemp3) (rofl) (yellomp3)

Mike, don't forget to bring some tools on your trip. Since your setup is newly installed, you never know if a clamp will loose and you will need basic tools to fix it on the road.

The first week I drove my car with the turbo, I had to fix some intercooler tubes 2 times because of loose clamps!!!

Better safe than sorry!!!:D

Thanks Stou,

Tonight I hooked up my water coolant lines to my turbo and the EGT is at most reading 1000 degrees. But ussually staying at 800 degrees. Also Stou Idouble checked everything again, I think tonight as I head to GA, I will be stopping every 30 min. to an hour. Ooh and I have tools. I also think that I got rid of that nasty oil leak. BIG BEN has me paranoid about that.

Wish me luck in the show

Mike where did you installed the probe for your EGT? I installed mine on the down pipe, approximately 2" from the turbo output. On normal use, the temperature is between 800 and 1000. On boost it can go to almost 1200. At idle, it can go down to 600.

Have a good trip and have fun to the show!

What would be a high EGT Temp? Just curious on when to start worrying.(scratch)

Actually Stou I noticed on the interstate (which this trip was my first long trip) the EGT was at a steady 1200. I installed mine in the O2 housing. I put my 2nd O2 sensor where you put your EGT thermocupl. I thought that it would keep my check engine light from comming on, but then me being the brainiac that I am went without the Cataliac converter sp. So I am seeing the check engine light all the time. Which is weird because I had the car running for a couple of days and no check engine light. I guess it was to good to be true

mike, you already in goergia?, i went to the "Super Street North Leg" pre party last night, saw some sick s***...lots 'o phatass rides!!! good luck reppin the mp3, i wanted to drive down there soo f-ing bad!, next year i WILL BE THERE!!!

again, good luck with your turbo, and the show

Ok Linux I am going on what I heard so don't quite me on this. High temperature on the EGT would be anywhere from 15-1600 I heard that is when your car is leaning out considerably. Like I said I am going on what I heard.

I never get more than 1250 on my EGT. But that depend on where the probe is installed. IF you install it on the exhaust manifold, it probably go higher than that. Also my manifold and downpipe are ceramic coated. It help a lot to keep the temperature lower.

EGT'S are a very touchy topic. I intially was inquiring about egt's when I first boosted my car and had to do alot of research to find the optimal temp ranges. The problem with egt's are that there are so many factors and variables involved such as probe palcement(before or after the turbo), runner probe placement, timing retard or advancement cruise, WOT, partial throttle ect. So all the numbers on different 4 cyl carswill be different due to these mentioned variables. It is true that the optimal ranges for our cars are roughly 1500 degrees, and the higher the temp the leaner the a/f mixture.

Now we must bare in mind that there is a variation in egt temps when the probe is placed either before or after the turbo. This temp variation is roughly 200 too 250 degrees F. So if we apply this if a probe is mounted in the down pipe and after the turbo (like stous car) and its giving a reading of 1250 F then it is actually 1450 to 1500F which is a fair egt reading regarding a/f ratio. This for WOT. Cruise will generaly generate higher egt's because the motor is at a higher rpm and not getting fuel because there is no boost sensed by the FMU (or other fueling solution) subsequently not adding fuel and resulting in higher egt's. So lets say 1550 F temps before the turbo are exceptable at cruise.

Now there are other factors about probe placement. The optimal placement would be before the turbo in the manifold runners. One probe per runner with 4 (thats right 4!!!) egt gauges. That gives the combustion temp of each cylider. But most of us do not have Formula 1 budgets so probe placement in the leanest cylinder runner (the one most likley to blow:eek: ) should do.

Also if timing is excessivly retarded this will dramatically raise egt temps. Other things such as over restrictive exhausts like our stock exhausts will raise egt temps. There are other things that should be mentioned such as partial throttle, egt gauge responce (laziness of the needle) that are beyond the scope of this topic.

When all is said the egt gauge is perhaps the most crucial and important monitoring insturment on an F/I car.........................that swhy its mounted right on top of my steering wheel for easy viewing;)

That clears it up for me thanks Spoolin, and yes I made it to GA fine. I am smelling this oil burning smell. But I have not located any leaks, is it possible to smell the oil in the turbo heating up and vomming through the air vents or am I just on crack:wtf:
But other than that the ride was great, I was really cautous stopping about a million times checking the car. I didn't need a misshap out in bum f#ck GA at 4 in the morning.

Also last night when I had about 400 miles under the turbos belt, in Montgomery AL there was a fixed up Honda getting on the interstate. SO I decided that I would mess with him a little bit. I didn't even down shift and I pulled him so hard, He down shifted though. So I would say thats one point for the FI MP3s;) (bluemp3)

Nice EGT rsum Spoolin (thumb)

Mike, about that oil burning smell. Check carefuly under your turbo if you can feel any oil. I had that kind of problem. It was the oil input 'L' fitting that was not sealed enough. I had a very very small leak (seep), and regularly, a drop of oil was falling on my exhaust.

Check on your exhaust to see if you have any trace of burned oil.

It's just a hint!
