2012 Mazdaspeed3
First off thanks for any help...I have a 2012 speed and have bought a Cobb Sri, after some research it turns out I really need a tune to be "safe". Is there an intake available that is "safe" without a tune? I have no plans to upgrade anything else just the intake, the AP seems to be the only option in tuning and its price is fair but more than I want to spend for what I'm doing.

No tune required with your Cobb SRI. Just put that on and go out and enjoy.

Do you have real world numbers to prove that? From what I gather it leans out at WOT, I just want to be as safe as possible but enjoy my car at the same time.

What kind of data are you looking for? The MAF sensor shouldn't have any problem adjusting for the additional air flow from the SRI.

I have a Corksport SRI and i run mine hard alot. Anytime you mod you are taking a chance but i think you will be fine. At the very least, you could get the AP and use it to log Fuel Pressure as that is the problem with the mazdaspeeds. The Fuel Pressure drops off at high RPMs. This can happen to a stock car but is more than likely to happen to a modded car. Alot of placed will say you are fine with the intake. If you plan to mod beyond that then you will probably need the upgraded fuel pump internals and the AP to get the most potential out of the parts.

What I have read is the stock MAF is 68mm and the Cobb is 71mm which causes a loss in air velocity which the ecu can't keep up with. This is off another forum so who knows how much truth that holds. It mentions the sure aeros as a fix because like stock it is also 68mm. I may have found my answer but any input is very much appreciated. I'm trying not to spend $800 for 20hp.

Without a Cobb AP (which can be purchased used for less than $500) there is no possible way to measure if the HPFP fuel pressure is dipping below 1600 PSI at WOT. Every car and setup is different so it is impossible to say that your setup is fine without monitoring it.

I am helping someone who has nothing but an AP get started and he is very close to that line with absolutely no mods and a Stage 1 tune.

Cobb provides and OTS MAP for nearly every brand of Intake that is for sale.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it if all you added was an intake. Since you have a GenPu, anything more than an intake (i.e. downpipe/midpipe) will require the upgrade of fuel pump internals to prevent Zoom Zoom Booms.

Sell the intake and get fuel pump internals. IMOP intakes dont add performance. Sound sure but not really worth close to $200 bucks. Work with tunes! Thats where the real potential in this car lies. Again my opinion :)
