ok so let me mention i am retarted when it comes to cars. i know more then most but not nearly as most people into cars. i am the first in my family to have any desire in cars and i actually tought my dad how to change oil lol. so let me ask a dumb question. how does a turbo work. i know tehres a turbo and the waste gate i know the turbo runs off exhuast but how is it routed. im guessing through the intake to the turbo but then what is it piped into the throttle body then the intake mani or what? then wtf does a wastegate do how does it function?

to be real basic, the air is taken in through the inlet where the turbine wheel is spinning at very high rpm's. it is pressurized and shot out of the turbo into the intercooler where the pressurized air is cooled because it heats up when it gets compressed. then out of the intercooler into the intake manifold. the very high flow of exhaust that comes out of the engine spins a turbine wheel on the opposite side of the turbo which is connected to the turbine on the intake side to keep it all spinning continuously while the engine is under load. while cruising you stay out of boost because the exhaust flow is not enough to spin the turbo until a certain amount of load is put on the motor. the wastegate has a spring that controls how much boost the turbo will generate to keep things safe and gets rid of excess boost

I always thought the wastegate and BOV were the same thing. Those two articles are pretty informative.

A great book for someone really interested in turbo mechanics is Maximum Boost. It goes pretty deep, but overall it is a great read...
