Anyone know if it can be done?
A 6-discs (non-bose) mp3 head unit installed into my BOSE equipped car?
I bought this head unit and was wondering if I can swap some internal parts of the radio to make it work correctly with my BOSE system...
Thanks

Eh.... bose HU does not have built-in amplification, and the non-bose does. So you're going to have to either use LOC's to reduce the signal to line-level before feeding the bose amp, or re-wire and take the speaker outputs directly to your speakers in the door. Either way you'll probably not be very happy with the results.

Not sure what year car you have, but my bose deck is 6-disc mp3 already. What did yours come with?

ALL MS3 sold in Canada have the bose system. My car is a 2007 and deck is 6 discs w/o mp3 capability (it was an option for that year). The 2008.5: They have all the mp3 capability...:(

you are planning to replace the only part of the system that does not suck

It sounds like he just wants MP3 capability. The reason I said he'd be disappointed is because running amplified output through an attenuator, then feeding it into the bose amp to be signal processed and then back out to the bose speakers would probably lead to a noticeable loss in fidelity. His best option would be to re-wire a bit and run the new HU directly to the door speakers. Now, I've never listened to the bose speakers with a flat, unadultered signal, so they might actually sound good... (eekdance)

I would recommend that route (wiring straight to speakers) in a heartbeat before attenuating to the bose amp. You'll lose the "sub" but that isn't much of a loss. Worst case you can later replace the door speakers with some quality 5x7's and be a lot happier.

if that is the case, why not just plug an mp3 player into the aux jack??

I was thinking that too, but he says he's already bought the HU, so I'm just suggesting how he can make that work. ;)

Hey, that is because I prefer a 6 disc with mp3 player capability: I don't have a ipod and I prefer to change audio track from the steering wheel. With the ipod I can't do that and I guess you should have to turn it off every time you don't use it? (pissed)

I was thinking of removing the laser lens assembly of the mp3 HU and swap with the one in my actual HU, so it could read MP3 and keep the bose audio system but I ignore if it's simple like that!
I would prefer to keep my Bose system intact.
I will give a try (nailbyt) and let you know!

It doesn't have anything to do with the laser, they read the same. It's the circuitry inside that is programmed to read and decode MP3 files. All you'd do is risk breaking both units if you did that. Your best bet would just be to use LOC's to reduce the speaker-level signal to line-level and feed it to the bose amp. That will be the fastest and probably easiest method.
