Noise when in neutral

I've noticed that my 2008.5 sometimes makes a rattling noise when it's idling in neutral with the clutch out. Outside the car it sounds like excess valve clearance.... tappita tappita tappita. Or maybe Ducati dry clutch noise. It's less noticeble inside the car and goes away when I push in the clutch. Depending on the exact idle rpms it can be pretty loud outside the car.

Does everyone else's MS3 do this too?

That's the throwout bearing, it's normal. Just don't let the car idle with the clutch out for a long time, it may cause the bearing to wear out prematurely.

When the clutch is out (foot off the pedal) the clutch springs aren't pushing against the bearing. I'm not sure how that would wear out the bearing more than idling with the clutch in.

Ok I thought I remember this thread and found it. Just today I started to notice this noise or it just started, I am not sure.

I never thought it would be the clutch but sure enough I pushed it in when I heard the noise and it stopped.

So what is this and is it a problem to where I should go in for warranty work?

Anyone think it is linked to that damn 2-3rd shift grind? I just did that again today and not sure if it is related to this noise.

Edit:

Just talked to a mechanic friend and he said his Tacoma does the same and it is not abnormal and to not worry. Any input?

Yeah mine does that and it's normal.

Speaking of the trans: Does anyone think their trans sounds sorta notchy and ratchety when you stop and shift into a gear sometimes? When I pull forward and shift into Reverse to back into my parking spot, its usually audible outside of the car, I can hear it with my windows down.

I dont think I hear that noise but I notice just like any manual tranny that if you try a shift into first and are going too fast it is gritty. I figure it is meant to be this way to prevent accidental shifts at a high speed but I notice it when down shifting and rolling up to a stop.

Other then that I dont think I hear that sound you describe but do you hear all the time or just some times?

I have the same sound

Has anyone taken the care for a warranty check up in regard the noise?

I thought I would do that but I am not sure what can be fixed if its just the fact there is no pressure on the bearing when the clutch is out. I dont see how this would change anything by them dinking with it but I will call and ask to see what they say.

I imagine this happens as the clutch wears in because I have 21k miles and I didnt every notice it before today. I am sure with time as these parts wear in the tolerances increase and you hear some things but in this case I am being told it is very typical and nothing to worry about.

On a Tacoma I had it squeaked and they replaced it which worked so maybe they can do something about this and make the noise go away.

I will call tomorrow and see what they tell me.

Naw only sometimes. Normally if the trans is cold, or if I'm just about to finish my drive and pop it into reverse to back up, it does it sometimes. I'm sure it's honestly nothing. Manual trannies are never flawless IMO.

Once upon a time, standard tranny was deemed the "safe" option due to the low failure rates. What happened to those days? LOL

I only Have 4890 miles on it!

I dont think so. My Speed 3 has only 4890 miles.

Well I will wait and see what happens because now I cant get it to make the noise again. I just know taking it in that this will happen and I will be standing there with my thumb up my ass, lol.

If it gets worse or happens more frequently I will take it in because I am sure they will fix it if needed. My Tacoma had it replaced and it was fine after that so I think it can be done.

Good to hear that others hear the same noise so I am not alone here. Thanks for responding guys.
