Noise coming from right front wheel area

I am hearing a "bump bump bump" noise coming from the right front of the car. Kinda sounds like a the wheel is out of balance but it is a lot worse sounding than that plus i just had my wheels balanced.

Here are my theories of what it could be:
1. Warped rotor(i dont feel vibration when i press brake pedal though)
2. Front right suspension strut is damaged.
3. wheel bearing bad
4. CV joint is bad.

I really hope it is not 4 cause that will be pricey.

any ideas?

Thanks
James

hey,

I work for kal tire. If you can supply some more info like when the nosie happens are you going straight or cornering, high speed or low speed, does the steering wheel shimmy? To me it sounds like a seperated tire. Let me know and i'll help you out.

have you checked for any animals like cats? They make a bump sound too when you run them over.

Seriously, more details would help. I would pop the wheel off and inspect it.

If the rotor was warped, you would feel the brake pedal pulsating when slowing down.

If the strut is blown, then you should have tire issues, cupping on the tread.

Jack up the car, and grab the top of the tire, and the bottom, and see if it moves at angles like typical camber angles. If it moves, bad bearing.

CV joints will make a clicking sound at low speed when turning. Grab it, and see if you get a lot of movement while it is on the ground. Any play, the might be it.

Of course, if it is liek a "vut vut vut" type sound, it might be allignment. My dad's dad sounded like that, toe in was really bad.

I would bet on the strut, especially if you are hearing it when bumps in the road are encountered. I had one go bad on me once on a car and it was noisy as heck.

During left turns the tire has been rubbing on the fender.. I am lowered with progress springs(with stock rims) ...right hand turns no rubbing.

hey man,

It still seems like a tire problem to me from what you have been describing. Another wierd one you might wanna check is the wheel weight hitting a part of the sspension. I've seen it before. It's hard to diagnose a problem over the internet. Wish i was there to help you out

Guys....the tire is fine.....i checked that.

Put the car in neutral, chock the other wheels and jack up the one that is making noise. Turn it by hand, if you're lucky (a relative term here) you'll hear the noise and will be able to determine where it is coming from. I've never tried this though and imagine that the transmission might not let you turn one front tire if the other front tire is still on the ground, so you might need to jack up both front tires. If it comes to that take it to a garage and have them put it up on a lift.

Did you figure out what the problem is? I'm starting to get the same thing. It's coming from the front left side and it only happens when the car is leaning or turning left. It doesn't happen when the car is leaning or turning right. Plus you can only feel it when you decellerate and apply the brakes.

Oh and the toe has been messed up for a while. but hasnt been a problem . no weird tire wear or odd handling.

get a four wheel alignment and see what that does if it has been out of wack for a while.

I just had the left front swaybar end link replaced under warranty. Not sure if it's the same noise but mine was a knocking sound over bumps.

are the lug nuts torqued to the proper spec (not just "guess-tightened" by hand)? if they're not, the small movement of the wheel will make a noise like that...gets louder with speed, and goes away under braking. they can be too loose even if they feel really tight.

bad CV joints usually only make noise while turning. bad wheel bearings usually don't "thump"; it's a constant grinding or squealing noise. a warped rotor usually won't make noise, and you'll feel the vibration in the steering wheel and under braking. you'd notice the blown strut around conrers, not really going straight (and i dont think it would make any sort of regular sound).
