No-Start Issue

2007 Mazda 6
Hi everyone. I'm a brand new member and this is, in fact, my first post.

To be honest I am a little desperate. I am having an intermittent issue with my 2007 Mazda6 which causes the car to be unable to start. Let me throw some facts at y'all and hopefully someone has an idea of what I can do.
-Car turns over, seems like it is about to start, gets to 600-700 rpm (sometimes) and then kills.
-Only seems to happen after the car has been running within the past 5 minutes to 1.5 hours and possibly when hot outside (did not happen until summer and when warm)
-Every so often, when it is 'trying' to start, I hear a single 'clunk' noise
-60000 miles

Current I am in Ohio and had to take a cab back to my hotel because it wouldn't start after stopping for dinner :(
Immediately before I left I had my mechanic look at it and he gave it a clean bill of health.

Because this somtimes happens multiple times a day and sometimes not for several weeks I have been unable to get a methanol to diagnose he problem. Any ideas you guys have would be greatly appreciated.
