Ok well I went to the dealer today to get tht clunk from the rear sway bar fixed. Here is what they replaced on the car.

BJ0E-28-170 times 2 Link controle arms for the rear sway bar, that's what was the problem.

My car has no more noise, less rattle from the back and it feels tighter in the turns. I suggest all of oyu get this done.. you will notice a big difference.

OH I AM FUKIN PISSED....

THe used a cutting torche or something to get something off on both sides. Now I have huge pit marks and steal stuck on my rear rims. I just got them powdercoated too.... I noticed this when I washed the car tonight..... I am fumin right now.... and I will let you know what they say to this... but make sure...

THEY TAKE OFF YOUR RIMS BEFORE THEY CUT ANYTHING OFF.....

jc, thank you for those #'s...i need to get mine replaced, i will make sure they remove my rims! how much did u pay to have them powdercoated? and what color did u do them in?

Thanks for the info...altho I might wait and see if the problem comes back after awhile for you as I've seen some people like newf I believe get the problem "fixed" only for it to come back a week or two later. I think it's pretty ridiculous there isn't some sorta universal fix or even recall for the problem as it's REALLY annoying to me.

Not yet

The noise is still not back. I have it fixed for about 1 week now. I will keep you posted. They did say that those control arms where lose, like wobbly, they didn't apply any pressure at all to the sway bar but now they do, so I am hopign this is the universal fix.

Are these different control arms than what originally came on the MP3? If they are the same I'm sure your clunk will be back. I had my entire swaybar assembly replaced in January and its been doing pretty well. Every once in awhile I hear the dreaded clunk on a big bump. Whatever, I'll just get it replaced again if it gets to that point... Thanks for the info.

BigB!

I never had my control arms and s*** replaced. So, I'm interested in seeing if this fix.....actually Fixes it.

I've had my bushings redone, and taped up again in the meantime. The ice is obviously gone here now, and so the roads aren't as bumpy. I'm guessing the clunk won't be back quite so soon for me now that the bushings aren't going to be worked so hard anymore.

That's a very good question. I'm interested in seeing if they are indeed different part #'s, and new parts.

Just a little FYI...I got my bushings...replaced...taped...lubed up....I still hear the clunking..when I replaced my bushings..I didn't hear no squeak or clunk for 4 months even on the COLDEST days....I have to call Mazda Canada to see if there is any kind of recall for our bushings and swar bar...

These control arms are supposed to be different from what the service guy told me.... Now you all know how dependable these guys are.

The dreaded clunk

Here is my latest info on the dreaded clunk....

I had my car in the dealership for an oil change last week and AGAIN mentioned the clunking noise (3rd time, 3rd oil change in a row - I'm over 19000KM now).

They said the service manager was going to a Mazda seminar in Toronto and he would bring it up on his issues list with the Mazda Canada service people, they said they would phone me afterwards and give me the scoop if they were going to do anything.

I thought I would never hear from them....but I was wrong (...hey, it has to be said...good service department?!).

They left a message with my wife today to call them and arrange an appointment to get "my new shock installed".

I haven't called them yet to book the appointment, but I'm curious!!!

Are they going to replace just one shock on the back? should I allow this? or demand a replacement for both?

is there a recall or service bulletin that Mazada has issued offering this replacement part? These are pretty price shocks so they must have thought about it for a while!!!

What do you guys think?

Back in Nov. when I was getting my dealership to ask about this, I too heard of something wrong with some shocks on the mp3's. I don't know how to explain this so I'll just tell the story.

I complained about clunk to my dealer. They heard it said...wtf is that? and started calling Mazda of Canada. At first, no one was of any help at all. " we don't know of any clunk problem" they said.

Finally, my dealer gets a hold of the eastern Canadian Mazda rep. I was present during this phone call. my dealer says...there's a clunk in the rear of this guys mp3, do you know what it is.

The canadian rep says" Oh yeah, that's that shock problem"

Were like.....huh? what shock problem?

He says: "You know, when the car is on the lift, you can reach up and grab the shock and twist it left/right and it's NOT supposed to do that"

We were like....ummmm no, that's not the problem and my shocks don't do that.

Canadian rep replies: "Oh, well maybe it's that bushing problem, and that Japan is working on a fix"

Anyhow. My shocks never did this. And I don't think it's got anything to do with it really. I think it's a completely seperate problem, obviously to do with the bushings.

I guess only time will tell. Thing is, it's been what....6 months now? like....come on already!

Not sure if you guys saw my post earlier. My mechanic is very certain that the clunking is a link problem, not a bushing problem. I got the links replaced, and the clunking ... decreased.

Well, it doesn't happen during normal driving. If you go through speed bumps at slow speed, it does not happen. If you go through speed bumps at normal 'shopping mall' speed, the clunk will come back from time to time.

The mechanic said it is possible mazda / racing beat has not yet 'perfected' the springs - he has the same problem with the aftermarket springs on his car. Not much can be done with this.

For those annoyed by the clunking noise, I strongly recommend spending the couple of hours to get the links replaced. Also agree with Jc that the handling felt better after the work.

clunking noise update

So here's the latest (see post two messages ago).

I called the dealer to make the appointment, spoke with the service manager and "Mazda is saying to replace both rear shock/struts - we ordered them, they are in, when can you bring your car in?".

The appointment is tomorrow - I'll let you know if I hear any clunking going on once they are in.

Maybe mazda (just Canada?) is going to replace everyone's shocks on request only or issue a recall/service bulletin?

The problem is that Mazda Canada only has 250 of these babies to service. not even close to the P5 sales or just the regular Protege. It mayb ea combination of problems, but I highly doubt it's the shock at all. I mean I got my links replaced and no more noise what so ever... and the back end is tighter... Now three people that have got this changed have said the said. Kurt's MP-3 and now mngai. Please take my word for it.. the links work...

clunking...

I had the links done the same time as the last oil change (when they said they will ask the Mazda canada people at next weeks meeting in Toronto).

True, I don't hear the clunks as much, but over high speed bumps where there is a significant amount of suspension travel, the clunk is still there.

Mazda are the ones coming back to me (all on their own, no bitching from me) saying its not only the links, but the shocks as well - they called me based on my conversation with the service department two weeks ago (I have to give them credit for following up!!).

Maybe the way I should take this is .....What can it hurt to get two new free rear end shocks almost 20000km into the life of the car?

That's what I thought too until they wrecked my rims and heated my rear sway bar. Now I have to have a sway bar that might snap on me due to the fact that it was heated to a red glow. Those mechanics do not have any respect for your car. If a clip breaks somewhere they will just put it back on regardless. That's why I hate getting stuff done by them, they jsut don't care. that is why I am weery of getting stuff done.. regardless if it's new or not... a toyota dealership screwed up an oil change... class ! mechanic screwed that up... put too much oil, then he tried to take some out by taking the oil filter off dumping it then putting it back on and lowering hte car from the hoist... checking the oil... he did this about 10 times.. before his boss told him to dump the oil from the pan and try again.... my dad drove 500 km with about 1/2 too much in the car... that's why I could care less about free shocks...

sorry I am just bitter today
