No LSD speedometer gear

When I had opened up the transmission to install my new Mazdaspeed LSD, I found that the differential I had originally had no speedometer gear. I don't know if my car doesn't require one for some reason, for instance, my friend suggested it might be because I have ABS. I don't know, anyone have any thoughts on this? Maybe people who have my car aren't required to purchase the speedometer gear as part of the package. Just thought I would do my part and make this public.

You're serious? :wtf:

So the stock dif, just had a bearing and an "empty" spot where the speed gear was? Do you have the sensor on the transmission? It goes through the housing and has another little white gear on it. . .post pictures, I must see.

Not saying it isn't true, just very curious. . .

Yep, the stock dif had no gear. I was thinking "I went through two speedometer gears for nothing?!" (you known my ordeal, because the metal was rough on the dif, I had to sand the second speedometer gear so that it wouldn't smash like the first when the bearing was pressed on). I do have wires leading down and plugging into something or another where that gear sensor would be on the trans, and then another sensor on the front of the transmission (not sure what that one is for). But there's just an empty gap where the speedometer gear should be on the differential (it's not like I broke it off or anything). (dunno) I'll try to post a picture when I have them available to me. It must have been getting the information from somewhere because I didn't have any problem with my speedometer.

Come to think of it, there was no white gear inside the transmission, I just assumed at the time that it must have some passive way of reading the speedometer gear.

damn, i didn't see this thread.

so hold on..your 2003 Pro didn't have a speedo gear on its original differential? Does it have ABS?

Why did you press on a speedo gear ring onto the MSP LSD (and how, more details please).

I talked to the mazda motorsports tech guy and he said the MSP's have no place to press a speedo ring onto since they use the ABS sensors to sense speed. This royally sucks for me b/c my MX3 uses a gear driven speedo that is attached to the top of the tranny via the fluid-fill hole.

The MP3 has a speedo gear. . .so I had to put one on. (the little white gear)

Huh? You have the quaife? The MSP has no speedo gear, that is what i'm wondering about.....whether or not it is possible to install a MSP diff on a speed-gear driven car.

wow! im glad i found this thread! as some of you know... did a msp convertion on my p5. now ever sence i swaped trannys my speedo hasnt worked. i checked everything.....i have my old p5 tranny still so i swaped speed sensors to see if i had a bad one from the msp tranny. when i pulled out the speed sensor on the msp tranny there wasnt any little gear like on my p5 speed sensor. nothing just bolted on with a plug for the harness wtf???? why??? so i did the swap and it still didnt work. i did notice that the msp tranny didnt have the gear inside to turn the p5 speed sensor so it still doesnt work. btw i never took a part the msp tranny...just did a swap over. and never touched the msp speed sensor......and it did work in the msp i got the tranny from. any ideals???? sounds like the same thing your going through.

thinking???? i wonder sence i have my p5 tranny if i could pull of the speed sensor gear inside and use it in the msp tranny? worth a try right? i hate not having a speedo let alove not being able to gage my miles driven!!!

Well I know a guy with a 1st gen pro who has one of these LSD's installed. I'm going to try to find out what he did to make his speedo work (if he did get it to work).

I dunno if ABS equipped P5's and ES's had no speedo sensors, but apparently the MSP's didn't so I'm assuming that other ABS equipped 3rd gens probably don't have the speedometer gears either and probably just use their ABS sensors to sense the speed.

I wonder if this is what puzzled my dealer, when they had problems installing my LSD.

if you have a P5 or MP3 or the like you can use a mazdaspeed LSD you just have to buy the pink speedo gear and it will press onto the diff so that you get a speedo reading.

If you have an ABS vehicle apparently you do not have that and you do not need the speedo gear for your speedometer. But if you have anything other than the ABS equipped vehicles like the mazdaspeed you need the pink gear on the diff and that will match up to the white gear shown in the pictures beavis posted. Then you should be all set.

Hope that summary/clarification helps.

thx, yes.... clears alot up! i was thinking^ this also.....but wasnt sure if the pink gear would be able to press into the diff or not. i guess there's only one way to find out for sure.

it should press on... I'll have my LSD in about 2 weeks... and will be doing the pressing myself... so I'll be able to make more comment then as well.

So it looks like, if you have ABS on your car, you don't need the speedometer gear. I didn't end up using the oil seals either because I've only got 32K highway miles on my car (year old) and they looked like they were in good shape. Your situation may vary, and it's better to have something extra than to find out you need something and have to wait to get it.

The oil seals are about $5/each and it makes sense to replace them. Even if you don't have many miles on them (since you're already down there), but yes, if you are careful, you can do this without needing to replace them. If they go bad later on. . .sucks to be you (not you simdrew. . .I'm just saying it would suck to have to replace just those).

yea my speedo works fine.. My dealer had issue pressing the gear on in house, and sent my LSD to corksport (recomended by MAZDASPEED) which is what caused my delay.

sounds like pressing the gear on is simple, yet my dealer called the MS rep, and were told to send it out :(

Yeah, I don't understand. . .but when we do turf's MSP LSD we'll have an answer to that. . .I think it is safe to say the MSP LSD has a spot for the speedo gear, and you'll use it on a MP3 (no ABS), but not necessarily on any car with ABS.
