no engine temp gage in dash ?

:
2016 CX-5
any reason why there's no engine temp gage in dash ? I don't mean the outside temp, I mean the engine temp most of my previous cars had it, good warning to have before overheating, or good indicator in winter to show engine is warmed up

surprised the CX-5 doesn't have, any reason ?

Blue light, when starting up indicates engine not yet at optimal temperature. Your 2nd. point is covered (winter). As for over-heating, if and when it happens - check engine light would kick in. It's a legacy gauge and thus removed. Good to have it still: sure. Can we live without it? Absolutely.

They more did it for a simple cluster layout plus some cost cutting. Blue light means engine coolant temp is below 50 degrees celcius. Peak operating temp is around 85c, though it can go up to 110 and still be considered normal. Once it gets too hot, you'll get a red coolant light and if it's dangerously hot, it'll flash. In 100% of driving situations with a fully operational cooling system, you'll never see the red light, absolutely never. I heard it comes on at 130 degrees. When I was driving in the mountains in around 100F, I was towing 3,200lbs full throttle with A/C on for about 5 full minutes. My coolant temp never exceeded 105 degrees. In my Volkswagen, I have a proper gauge but it's tuned so that it will stay in the middle(90c) all the time. It has a threshold of when the car is between 70c and 120c, it'll read "90". So it's no more accurate than a light.

This isn't a sports car, the blue light indicating when the engine is at operating temperature is adequate.

I typed this up on my Smartphone using Tapatalk [emoji12]

Yes no more gauges taking up valuable room on the dash. (poke)

The Colored Thermometer Icon on the instrument cluster is now our "GAUGE"

Blue Thermometer means "NOT WARMED UP YET"

No Thermometer means "NORMAL"

Red Thermometer means "WARNING: Above Normal Operating Temperature"

Red Flashing Thermometer means "STOP: Pull over ASAP to prevent Damage"

I miss having a gauge but, eventually got used to the light thing. I suppose that next they will eliminate the tachometer. :-)) ed

SHHHH!!! Don't give the bean-counters any ideas...(nailbyt)

Have no idea. I've owned a CX5 before and have to admit, liked the old version much better. I just purchased a 2016 CX5 and I'm not liking it all. The back-up sensor isn't beeping(like the old models) and we can't figure out how to silence the radio when the Navigation System is working at the same time. I've reached out to the dealership where I bought the car but they have no idea either. Do you know?

Do you own the new 2016 CX5 GS? I have questions about it (just bought it last week) and the dealership here said they don't know the answers to activating the sound for the back up sensor along with silencing the radio when the NAV system is going.

Most of those things you thought were gauges were just idiot-dials that would move to the center and stay there. Ford has/had them for oil pressure, and temp, and other things. Instead of putting idiot gauges that mean nothing on the dash, most manufacturers in family car type vehicles have just gone with lights that come on once you pass a threshold.

Granted it's a 2015 but my back-up sensors have an on-off switch in the trunk by the interior light.

1st.: check whether you have backup sensors in the first place. In 2016, its an OPTIONAL accessory and its costly. Hardly few opt for it.
2nd: You can silence the radio. Just push the volume button besides the big dial and the radio is silenced! The navigation voice prompts still work fine. I did the mistake of lowering the volume to zero for radio exactly at the same time the navigation voice prompt was saying something and ended up silencing the navigation voice prompt instead. Just make sure any up/down volume you do is when the navigation voice prompt is not saying something/is active.

Buy a ScanGauge and put it in the middle right above the USB port. The you can read temp, Open closed loop, volts, Intake maf, and alot more. Plus you can change the color to match the lighting or not

One thing I can promise is that the blue light on the dash is worthless. Coolant temps probably aren't even over 120*f when it clicks off, and oil Temps are likely within 20*f of ambient, still. I have no idea what the purpose of the light is other than maybe to signify that the ecu is no longer running the fuel so rich?

Most likely, it is easier to see a blinking red light, then a needle in the wrong spot.

LOL. So now it's smart lights and idiot guages, eh. That's a new one.

I wouldn't call them idiot gauges as they did indicate normal temperature but to a lot of drivers, they were meaningless so some manufacturers have gone to the warning light system. The engine temperature is monitored very carefully by the engine management system and there are gauges that can read it by plugging into the OBD port if it is of particular interest.

I call it an idiot-gauge because it's "dumb". It doesn't "know anything", in that, it tells you nothing. They simply hover right in the middle unless things completely go to hell. I think they did this because it kept people from complaining that their oil-pressure is 35psi at idle, while Bob's is at 42psi, and they read online that low oil pressure could result from larger clearances in the main bearings, etc...

The Entertainment software should silence the radio automatically when the Nav says something. It does it when it receives a phone call.
