Newf's Clunk update...

Well, I'm the infamous clunk guy.

Here's the latest on my story. For the rest, search for my name or the words CLUNK or STRUTS, or BUSHINGS ( for you newbee's)

The last time I said the district Manager for MAzda had been in to see my car, as well as some other big shots. They suggested two things to cut down on some noises.

1. Powder Coat the Rear swaybar to make it thicker, hence making the bushings fit tighter.

2. Getting my strut mounts replaced to reduce the squeaking noises in the rear. Protege's and P5 have a strut mount problem.

Well, the powder coat idea didin't sound right to me, or my dealer. So, we got a hold of the mechanic in Halifax, who came up with the idea, and he suggested that he should call the original MP3 owner that he tried this with to see if it was still ok. He hadn't heard from him in a long time, so he thought the car was ok and that the powder coat idea worked. But, when he called, the MP3 owner said, " Glad you called, I've been too busy to try to get a hold of you lately, the car is clunking again and I need another appointment".

So, the powder coat idea don't work. But, he did get 7000 kms out of it before the clunking started again.

I'm getting it done anyhow....why not, I'm not paying for it. 7000 kms would last me until MAy-June. Don't drive the mp3 much in winter.

AS for the strut mounts. Got them put on yesterday. I hate to jinx myself...but so far so good....sssshhhhhhh. don't say that loud. But, realistically, it hasn't been that cold out today. But it ain't warm either, and I would usually hear those noises....but not today. Too good to be true?

The new struts still feel good too. One thing is for sure, I have the newest suspension of all MP3 owners..... since it's been completely replaced.

I'll update as soon as I hear the noises again....yes, I have no faith.

Good news is that the District Manager is now calling my dealership regularly to check on me......imagine that.

Hey, I'm no engineer....well, not an auto-enginner. It's up to Mazda to come up with the fix. Maybe we should ask them that question. Good question though

got another call today. Looks like there's yet another new bushing for the rear of the mp3. That's now 5 different sets and part numbers. Apparantly my car has the 4th version of their "fix", which are crap. They didn't last 3 days.

I'll get the new bushings on Tuesday. They also said to get some rust proofing spray underneath where the bushings gets latched on. Not sure why other then the obvious.

I'll update next week

Oh, and still no noise out of my struts. But, it's not very cold still.

no probem once I get them. Look for it Tuesday.

greatly appreciated ;)

So what you mean is Mazda came out with a new set of bushings again? didnt they only have the 1 set of new bushings out so far and you said 4th?

Tell that mazda rep that theres like 30 of us on this site that are waiting on a good fix and that we are extremely happy that they are usuing you as a guinnee (sp?) pig to fix it. But hurry the hell up. Warranty's are fading fast damn it.

After seeing some of the part numbers here, I knew there was at least 3. I never had a clue there was 5 different bushings. Now, I'm going by only what I was told. I am very interested in seeing the part number of this "new bushing".

lets cross our fingers. I hope it works. The clunking really hasn't gotten on my nerves yet. And i'm the type of person that say ah big deal it's makes a little noise now and then.

Right now my MP3 is one year old and it only squeeks when the car has been left for a long time (3 hours) in extreme cold (50-40 F) and it only last till the car warms up (5-10 min). Is this how the rest of guys have it or does it squeek not stop in cold weather?

No news until tuesday. Waiting for parts to get here.

My struts have not squeaked since I got the new strut mounts. But, it has been warmer here then usual. Today is colder, so when I go out today.....you never know, maybe she will squeak.

lets just hope that she doesnt squeak :)

waiting for your word on Tuesday then

STill no squeak! And it's definitely colder out today. But, I'm waiting for that really cold day, where the snow is right crunchy type of day, and everything is frozen ( not melting like now ) before I break out the champagne.

...till tueday then.

front ones have a small scruchy sound ( spelling?) when car is cold. Goes away after she warms up. It's very minor, and doesn't bother me much.

Bushings are here, dealer just called me. And I have the appointment for Tomorrow afternoon. I can't wait to see if that part number is actually new.

ARRGgghh!!

I live out in Phoenix, and it's dropped about 20-25 degrees in the last week. All of a sudden I am hearing a lound thunk from the front right tire area. It only happens when I go over bumps, but is loud enough to grab my attnetion.

Could this be the swaybar as well? I've checked my springs and top-hat and everyhting looks ok.

newf : hey man your going into the shop today.. hope everything works out for ya :)

When you come back could you post a full recap of the new parts going on your car and such? :D

she in the shop right now. I'll be picking it up in about 3 hours.

CAn't say I've ever heard a thunk in the front. Maybe a blown strut? Just a guess.
