Newb to forum - need SplitSecond AFC help

Hi all - I'm newb to posting, but have been reading about things on here for a while now. I have an 03 MSP and was just installing my splitsecond AFC (after reading, I know its the right one as I bought it from ProtegeGarage). After installing it, the car idles very rough & my wideband reads out at 9.0....very rich & can smell the raw gas in the exhaust. I've uploaded the Superstock map several times as well as resetting the ECU, and it still runs like poop :( . When I reset the wiring back to stock, the car runs fine (leaving the vacuum attached to the AFC unit as I don't want to plug it)...does anyone know why this might be happening?

Also, I tried just changing the map to all 10s...theoretically allowing the car to run as stock....still runs like crap.

I posted in thread also, so if my answers come here I'll link the 2 so everyone can benefit from any solutions.

Thanks!!

SS said that our mass air flow uses current(milli amps) and voltage on the msp, to read the signal from our hot wire maf, this is why you can't use just any voltage clamp, I would call them and ask about the unit you acquired? Did you also get a CEL, running super rich and a CEL is a sure sign it isn't carrying the voltage from the MAF -> SS unit -> ECU.

Its is also possible that you got a defective unite. Call ken, or even PM him.
i would try and avoid running you car like that too much.

thanks guys...I've emailed Ken & still waiting on a reply. I don't have a good tester to confirm voltage on both sides of the MAF & O2 wires, but did not get a CEL. I would only allow the car to run like that for maybe 30 seconds tops....since I didn't want to foul out any plugs or ruin my O2 sensors with the heavy fuel in the exhaust. I'm thinking at this point that I did get a faulty unit...we'll wait & see what Ken gets back to me with.

yeah...all soldered connections with shrinkwrap & still had the trouble. I got a quick response from Ken & he's just waiting on input from someone else (not sure who but I believe it may be a SplitSecond rep on a hunch).

O2 sensor weak ground, any disruption (installation of SS-AFC put your ecu grounding system at its limits) of the o2 ground will cause an issue (output a full .9mV super rich - vehicle will try to lean it out),an O2 element creates voltage (the reference for it is the ground - mess with the ground the element has nothing to bring the voltage back down with),

testing : with an ohm meter and volt meter, measure resistance from engine block to neg battery should not exceed 15 Ohms, also take a voltage reading with vehicle off, from the battery terminals say its 12.3 volts..... Take a reading from the positive terminal on battery to (ground) the engine block, difference should not be greater than 1 volt.

Also, Take a reading from the positive terminal on battery to (ground) the ecu ground by the drivers side strut tower bolt with a white multi-connector, difference should not be greater than .5 volt.

If it is check ground connections, clean connections, you may have to use a wire brush on the eyelets of the washer-wire connectors.

Unless there is a breach in the connections inside your AFC, that could cause some back feed causing similar symptoms, but I would assume the unit wouldn't power up if that were the case.
