Newb question: Where can I put a subwoofer?

In a 2003 Protege sedan, what are the possible locations to put a sub? Does it have to go in the trunk, or is there a way to put it in the cabin somehow? It seems like a waste to put it in the trunk, since that is so far away from the driver and a lot of the sound will be lost.

Well you actualy want to be 1/4 cycle away from you so in the trunk is usualy good.

You can put them damn near anywhere though. Can use the passenger foot well with a thin 10 or custom cut into the rear deck if you like.

I would suggest just using the trunk and be done with it though.

Agreed. I've been running a 12" sub in my trunk for years with satisfying results. Since you're relying mostly on the reverb/low tone vibration from the speaker it's prob the best acoustic setup. You lose a little storage space but it's worth it in the end. Easy to do and doesn't involve cutting into anything. :D

I usually don't listen to music very loud, I just want a little bit extra on the low end. I also don't want everyone in the neighborhood to hear it, so if the sub was closer to me instead of in the trunk, I could lower the sub volume but it would still sound just as loud to me, right? Or does it not make much difference?

I was thinking a small self powered sub would do the trick, maybe on the rear deck.

It does and doesnt work that way. A certain sounds loudest point is 1/4 cycle of its wave length from its origin. FOr subwoofers, this is anywhere from 9' to 2.5' SO for some of the really low sounds, you often want it in the trunk. Either way, being in an enclosed environment will help keep the sound in the car. The way to help this is to add sound deadening products that will not allow the metal of the car to radiate the sound to the outside world, and help to make it sound better inside. A power sub on the rear deck is no better then one in the trunk unless you are cutting out the rear deck. However, the custom fabrication to do this properly and attractively makes using a powered sub a lame idea as you should be using component subwoofers and amplification at that point.

If you mean to actualy put a power sub on top of the rear deck. Then that may be the single most ghetto thing I have ever heard and I may have to slap you silly. Not to mention, it will be stolen in no time.
A signel 10" subwoofer with a good amp in the trunk with a nice little box will do the trick, and do it economicly.

I has a aony subwoofer which can put it under the passenger seat in a 98 Protege~

It sounds very good~ but someone broke my window and thieved it..... sad..

Lol. Proof that home audio (even a computer surround sub) is hackable to car audio. (cryhard)(yippy)

Sounds better than a lot people's 12'' which in the trunk ~

The bass very clean and clear.
