NEW: The $500 Audio Challenge!!!!!

The timing couldn't be better for me to find this post. My P5 has 172,000 miles and I'm debating keeping it. If I do, the stock stereo won't do for the next 100,000+. Plus, I want to be able to plug in my MP3 player.

In addition, the $500 budget is right on target. Has anyone actually applied any of the previuosly listed suggestions? What were the results? Any new equipment out there that I should consider?

Any help is appreciated.

all teh guys that posted, most of those ARE thier setups, so yeah, they've been tested

And same with all technology, there is always something bigger and better coming out, which means when it does, the older stuff listed gets cheaper.

I've upgraded my headunit to a clearnce unit from Best Buy for $50 and that alone made the stock speakers sing like they never have.

I also had a crap amp and sub in the garage from my jeep i threw in the car, and just bought some Polk 5x7's off another member here for $40 shipped

so, my current stereo total is a little less than $150 and i can't complain too much

Good to know and thanks for your response.

What would be a good factory replacement speaker setup and MP3 capable head unit, knowing I won't be using amps or speaker boxes?

Is that possible to do and still get good mid to high volume sound quality?

$500 would for sure be my cap.

Sound System for MSP

Ok, well I know next to nothing about speaker systems.... but could someone recommend me a good setup to install in a MSP? for under 600? I know it has a slightly improved audio system already but I would want to install a new sub(s) and amp at the very least, and would consider speakers and head unit if it was affordable.

I'm very sorry I just have no idea what I'm doing in searching for good components!

Thanks in advance!

I recently performed an overhaul of my sound system in my P5. After everything is said and done, it will come out around $510. I have installed the fronts and receiver and am going to order the amp and subs in the next few days.

Does the MSP have tweeters installed in the sail panels, doors, dash or pillar?

I don't remember, but if they do, then you can replace those with a decent quality component system. Use an adapter to mount 6" mid-bass or go with some of the 5x7/6x8 based components available.

The rears can stay, they are only for fill and rear passengers, don't worry about them as much.

As for subwoofer(s) and amps, it really depends on how loud you want it to play and how much space you're willing to give up to get it.

You can easily spend that entire $500 budget on your sub system and get mindblowing bass. So much so that you'll need to install some sound deading for all the shaking it will cause if you don't.

As for head unit, you really need to outline what you want or desire in a feature set. Do you have an Ipod? Do you like Sat Radio? Is SQ more important than loudness? Are there cellphone regulations in your city/county/state?

These are all factors that increase the price of a head unit. I always suggest getting as much HU as you can afford. The $100-150 range is pretty sorry IMHO unless you can get previous year's models for great price. Even going up to $200 doesn't get you much more than decent subwoofer control and maybe direct Ipod interface. At around $300 things get better, you get some serious sound control, better A/D chips and more crossover options. Along with Bluetooth, 3 line support for Ipods and Sat Radio, this is where I would start shopping personally.

Give me a better outline of what your looking for and I'll make some suggestions.

Basic Upgrade in Functionality

I wanted something to upgrade the Six CD changer [sans MP3] in my '07 Mazda 5. My requirements were Bluetooth and a USB in, preferably on the front. HD Radio was a bonus.

Dashkit for for Mazda5, Metra 99-7509, installer.com: $25.50 + $9.90 shipping . The fitment wasn't great, I'd probably recommend going with the Schoche Dash kit (which is $10 more expensive) in the hopes it fit better.

My Build

Here's what I'm looking at doing. The goal of this build is great full-range quality with no subs or full-size amps. Any thoughts?

Crutchfield includes mounting, wiring harness, etc.
Also they include a free iPod cable

Alpine KTP-445 Power Pack (upgrades HU to 45Wx4 RMS) - $100 (free shipping)
http://www.abt.com/product/39274/Alpine-KTP445.html

Pioneer TS-D6802r 6x8 speakers for the front (60W RMS 260 Peak) - $84 (free shipping)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

Pioneer TS-D1602r 6.5 speakers for the rear (60W RMS 260 Peak) - $71 (free shipping)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned)

Total cost is $455 with a little room to spare for some dynamat squares or something similar.

Do you guys think I can use the stock speaker wires, or should I be going through the effort of putting in new wiring?
