new skyactive 2.5liter gas engine

I'll bet it will be a minimal difference, but being a 25% increase in displacement, and assuming everything else stays the same (powertrain, weight, etc.), I have to assume it will likely be a larger difference than just a single MPG.

Now, if we are talking about a 1 MPG difference between the 2.5 in the 6 and the 2.0 on the CX-5, I might buy that, factoring in the ~3,000lb curb weight we should supposedly expect with the new Mazda 6.

I would imagine that along with the nefound torque of the new 2.5 that they could also change the gearing ratios in the trannies, and redefine the parameters on the ECU for efficiency... I could easily see a skyactive 2.5 doing 28-34MPG being as the old 2.5 in my 07' mazda 6 pulls around 26-31MPG... with the 5 speed sport shift auto... and the mazda 6 is heavier than the CX-5 is...

well after re-thinking this I kind of doubt for cost savings sake they would not design a completely new tranny, as gearing changes would completely change the gearsets, and thus the tranny casing.. however they could possibly change the final drive ratios, and the front/rear drive ratios on the AWD versions. I would like to a see if they could add a "lockup" switch to the console.. using just the onboard braking system (EBD), and the traction control/wheel speed sensors to effectively lock up the front wheels in the FWD, or all 4 in the AWD versions. I'm sure this could be done fairly easily with a reflash of the ECU, and an added switch. I have yet to spin tires in my AWD.. but the snow is soon to come.. we've had our first frost already. and I have a bad feeling this winter is going to be brutal.

Good info, good find, thanks. Based on info, about 22.1% increase in horsepower or about 189hp.

Nice to see Mazda round out the available engine selection.
