hmm interesting idea. I have never thought about where you would put the HU in this situation. Although I have no idea if you would be able to install the headunit next to the air bag. Dunno if its safe or not.

Although, there are quite few people here on the forums with TV's (touch screen LCDs) installed instead of the headunit. If Ill see someone with in-dash TV I will contact them for ya. In the mean time, search for threads regarding this issue to speed up the process.

a few people have put a HU in the space under the cigarette lighter, behind the cupholder. it does involve some cutting though.

Yea where you have circled would not work, there is a support you would totally have to cut through and the A/C vent for that side as well. As Jos3 explained the best area is under the cig lighter and i believe somewhere there are some pictures.

Search for carputer and in dash DVD. You get an in dash screen that powers out and you get a single din CD player and it all fits in the double din opening. It is quite simple in the Protege dash. or you can just get a DVD player and that would cover both bases.

You can do an all in one, either single din flipout with a dash kit or you can do a double din screen, (Eclipse, Pioneer, Kenwood, etc) You could also do a 7" flushed headrest monitor and put a dvd head unit in the pocket in front of the cupholder. It would be expensive labor but would look good.

i just put in a the jensen double DIN TV/DVD/MP3 player with touch screen. it looks bad ass i just suggest getting one of these since it plays everything (mp3, dvd, avi, divx, wma etc.) and it all fits into the factory dash location. car is in the shop but i could try to post a pic either tomoro or the next day
