New info on the next RX from Mazda!!!

hold on, i gotta pick my jaw off the ground and change my shorts.....that would be badass

i am not sure about this one. these rumors have been flying around for a couple of years and they just keep getting more and more crazy. i will eat my words and gladly buy a twin turbo model if they build one, but these have been flying around for a while and nothing has come up yet.

Nowhere in the article does it say twin turbo.

HIROSHIMA, Japan — Sources close to Mazda told Inside Line today that the next Mazda RX-7 is still in the works. Inside Line has also learned that a new Mazda RX-8 is also in the works and is expected to be called the Mazda RX-9.

Mazda will not let the rotary engine die with the current RX-8, sources tell IL. The company is well along in development of its next-generation RX-7, fitted with a front midship-mounted 16X rotary engine. The engine will generate upward of 270 horsepower from a normally aspirated power unit, they say.

The new twin-rotor engine will feature an 800cc x 2 configuration, up from the current 13B's 654cc x 2 format, while improving fuel economy by 20 percent.

By building such an engine, Mazda is looking to clean up a rotary image that was fraught with poor economy and emissions and excessive oil use.

The next RX-7's transmission is also all new. It's a twin-clutch, two-pedal six-speed unit with a twist that allows drivers to set the revs at which the clutches engage.

Engineers are also reportedly working on weight issues. By developing a new chassis, they have been able to shed some 220 pounds, reducing the RX-7's curb weight to the 2,640-pound range, according to one source.

Sorry Rotor, nothing really new to report other than it may come true....still.

I think they are changing EVERYTHING the RX7 was good for..

Upping the power and increasing fuel economy by 20%..

oK more power cool..
Does anyone understand that SIDE PORT ENGINE SUCK..

when these blow nobody who is into rotaries will build a side port engine for racing or for their (weekend warrior)

The best part of porting an engine (large street port, bridge, J-port) is to get OVERLAP!!!!

without overlap u can kiss the ultimate power and 10K rpm goodbye.. and NO SIDE PORT can ever have overlap..

bridgeport a renises engine... try it and see how miserable it is..

now its going to be a front mounted engine.. remember everyone all RX7-8 are considered MID ENGINE CARS.. it was part of the 50/50 weight distribution (well in the 7 models)

I think eventually Mazda engeneers are going to loose what the rotary power plant is all about and eventually u will see more people doing swaps for RE/REW or 13BT into their 8 and future cars..

and paddle shifts... FTL!!!

I hear what your saying, but I think Mazda's market is for production street cars, no? ;)

if that is mazda's market, they need to gear it as such. the rx line just keeps getting younger and cheaper. nothing technically wrong with that, but they used to compete with porche and they now compete with toyota and honda.

i dont think they ever competed with porshe. they always competed with toyota honda and other like cars. its just when the rx7 was out so was the supra, 3000gt and other amazing cars. once everyone started going green, emmisions and peoples needs started swaying from super powwerful rear wheel drive cars. dont get me wrong i would love to see the powerful rx7 back!

Yes they directly competed with Toyota, Honda and others, but all of the competed against Porsche, BMW and other EU manufancturers and also with Vette, Viper and other... But Japanese cars were much cheaper then the other ones ;)
It was all about entering the market and making a name for themselves, just like the Koreans are doing now and what Chinese will do in a few years time.

Mazda competes with toyo and honda with their cars..

the RX models was suppose to be their "sports car"

it was built to compete with Datsun back in the 70-80's and it did VERY well. Now the RX8's... I dont see them as a sports car.. and they really don't compete with many "sports cars" of the day..

Manufactures are gearing toward better emissions and all that green s*** but they can still have a "sports car" and it can be the "different one"

I say GHEY!

I disagree with the rx8 not keeping with the sports cars of today. It handles better than a 350z does...beats toyota hands down cause they don't have anything, and the s2k edges it out in performance but the rx8 has more creature comforts.

sorry IMO a sports car cant be a 4dr.
the G35 is WAY better of a car hands down
the S2K is much more sporty of a car and is better
the 350Z may not handle as well but has more raw power then the 8
sports cars dont have to have "creature comforts" they should be raw, powerfull, exciting..

IMO the 8 is lack luster.. I enjoy uit, I would like one but to me its not an RX7 and its not a "sports car" it does not have the "pedigree" the RX7 did..

I don't think it is too much to worry about. I was and still am awaiting the RX7 release as I am very interested in buying one as a mostly stock daily driver. Maybe by then I'll have my j-bridge FC up and running and that is used for the racing, power making and poor fuel economy.

Hurry lol...still got the carb for it in my garage

And the rx8 was never meant to be a pure bred sports car I think that's why they put the extra doors on it. It does do extremely well for what it is and fits its own little niche.

I hope they NEVER bring back the RX- "7"

anytime a maker brings back a "dead" car its usually the end of the line..

rx8 or rx9 ok.. no more rx7's..

name a comback car that made out.

charger.... no go
gto... no go
last made supra.. didnt last (great car but no)
t-bird.... no

name a car thats been out of the us market for 15 years that came back and refired a revolution...
