New here, Need some help with my 02 P5

:
2002 Mazda Protege5
My Honda was stolen 2 weeks ago, nothing special about it, when I got it back it was completely stripped. Found a 02 Mazda Protege5 for 3800. Jumped on it. Bought it last Thursday. Last night after I left work. It lost power pulled to the shoulder and it shut off. Tried starting it, doesn't sound like it's cranking, I can hear the starter turning. Towed it off the Hwy. Put a new battery, plugs, coils in it today still nothing. Any ideas? Relays maybe?

Pull oil filler cap and have someone crank it while you watch the cams. If the cams don't move there is an issue with the timing belt or tensioner.

Probably just needs a timing belt, my friend's MSP just had this problem. The FSDE is non-interference so you should be fine with a new belt. Good luck, I have had great luck with both of my Proteges over the years.

Yeah, I've heard great things about them. Always liked the sporty look of them. Dropped it at a shop I use, They said the cams and valves look fine, No teeth on the belt, looks like the tensioner might of broke. They will be putting a new belt kit on it. Hoping that fixes it and I don't have to send off the head.

Well.. Good and bad news for the P5. They put a new timing belt on. Started right up. Saw the old belt, It was missing about 15 teeth here and there. Started right up but runs like s*** at idle. Feels like a miss fire. So i am guess there is a bent valve. Which would be cheaper and better to do. Send the head off to get the valve replaced or seated, or just replace the entire engine. I can get another one from JDMengine corp for 824.00.

I'm thinking that you were lucky and got a P5 that hasn't evolved into an interference engine.

Go to autozone and borrow an exhaust gas sniffer if you're convinced it has bent valves.

I'd do the seafoam route first.

Remember too that your ECU needs to relearn the car and that takes about a hundred miles of driving to get set.

A code reader will tell you if all engine parameters have been met

If it were me, I'd do the wait and see what happens approach,... I like the laziest methods of auto repair.

A bad plug can cause a miss also. Start simple.

The timing is definitely set right? Sounds like the timing belt is off. Compression test will reveal if the valves are bent.

Replaced plugs with NGK laser, Put new coil packs and wires today. Raised the throttle to 1k, was stumbling between 300-500. Runs a little better but can still feel the shake in the engine. Reset the ecu, no engine light yet. After reading the forums and timing belt changes. Sounds like the timing might be off. Will have to check that this week if I get off early enough. Anyone know the timing specs?

+1

if you have a vac gauge laying around, it can help diagnose the issue. too little vac at idle also suggest bad timing, bouncing vac at idle a bent valve.

Reset the ecu, no engine light yet.

if you reset your ECU it sets all parameters back to original factory settings. your car is 13 years old now and your parameters are different than original.

my car idles like crap and shakes like crazy when it's learning. I don't pay attention to it anymore and wait for it to finish the process

Got off early today. Went to a buddies shop, Compression is good. Thinking maybe when the timing belt broke it screwed up the crank sensor. If it isn't that then I don't know what the random miss could be. Engine light came back on today code P0300 is what it's throwing.

Well,... Here's the list for a random misfire,... too bad it is random and not cylinder specific,.. that would be a lot less to have to consider ,... Good luck

You may be able to just ignore the damn light,.. if I recall, Texas doesn't have E-Testing and if your car isn't leaving you stranded you're fine,.... If you burn up your pre-cat just throw on a header with a non-fouler,.. (You could even do the non-fouler now to stop the damn light)

P.S. the car will run with a bad crank sensor but not a bad cam sensor or vise-versa (I forget which)

I think a serious double or triple treatment of seafoam might well fix it,... especially the vac line treatment followed by gas then oil.

if you live in the dallas fort worth metroplex you need to take care of the light. they emission test here. +1 with seafoam, go through the brake booster line, disconnect hose and start car pour slowly until about half the can, or in your case maybe all the can is gone (slow enough to not let engine die) then turn car off for 30 minutes to an hour then go drive it hard (it will smoke a ton especially at first) but its the carbon build up burning off. and start this procedure when the engine ahs already been warmed up (before pouring in, so the sitting time burns the carbon hot)

Thanks pcb! I'm not to worried about the light. More worried if the valve is bent, and even more worried if it's going to leave me stranded late at night on the side of the highway again. The only time I can feel the miss is while sitting at idle, It idles rough between 500-800rpm. Once i start driving I can't tell if it's missing or not. Meaning it runs fine.

try cleaning the egr valve, egr valves are a small issue on these cars that can cause your symptoms but usually, but not always, throw a check engine code specifying egr. if you do remove it, get a new egr valve gasket, about $10 at autozone. also check for loose or badly cracked hoses and/or rips in your air intake boot. alsoc worth checking the ignition coils $48 at autozone. replace the wires too.

Will try the seafoam this weekend. Put one new coil and new wires on last weekend. Autozone only had one in stock. Will have to search for another this weekend. Are there any cons with using the seafoam? Heard about it but never tried it.

If your system is gummed up with 13 years of build up, it can all be released at once. Seafoam claims their product dissolves stuff slow enough to be washed through.

I have had great luck with it,... I use it at every oil change. (oil, vac line & fuel)

Your IAC valve may be gummed up,.. the cleaning could restore your idle.

(Idle Air Control valve,... When the ECU detects that the engine should go to idle, it sends engine control to the IAC valve for that function.)
