New here, just picked up a P5

Hey everyone, I have some questions for all the pros here about the '03 Protege 5 I just picked up today. It was a repo with damage to the bottom of both driver's side doors. (If anyone knows where I can pick up 2 doors in blue, please let me know, I'm in the market.) What's some of the things I need to look at or pay special attention to? What mods should I get, and is there anything I should stay away from?

Hello and welcome. Sorry, no answer to your question, but just wondering if you bought your car with the damage? Assuming yes with you looking for doors. How much did you pay and got any pics? Bad damage?

Ya, I bought it with the damage, no extra charge. I got it a little under wholesale. Damage isn't too bad as long as I can find some doors. Everything is functional, ie, the window still goes all the way down and they close nicely. Check out pics...

Best bet will be salvage yards for the doors....use something like partsfinder dot com, or a similair search..You can call most salvage yards and they have a national database of available parts, so they can give you some help...

I found 2 sets of doors so far but they are out of state. If I end up getting them shipped, which color is easier to paint over, silver or the darker blue? Does it really matter?

hey! that looks like my car! without the dents or chromed wheels!
welcome to the boards! and good luck with the doors :)

Welcome to the forums! I guess the only thing you should check is the VTCS recall. Make sure your car isn't in the affected range of VINs by checking the attachment. Also, there's a thread for new guys inquiring about mods. It's right here.

Other than the damage, your car looks great! Let us know if you need anything else, there's usually plenty of folks around here who are happy to help. :)

It doesn't really matter. Sand - primer - paint - clear coat.

Are you only looking for P5 doors? Because I'm pretty sure the sedan doors should be the same and all of the 3rd gen Proteges came in Laser Blue. Otherwise, I'd go w/ silver. And good color choice. :)

check car-parts.com for the doors and you could get manual doors from like 99 like i did paint them and then change over the power stuff into the new doors. plus the manual doors will be a whole lot cheaper.

Thanks for all the input everyone. So front doors from 99-03 will fit, but I'm told the back one needs to be 2000-03. Is this the case? I suck at body work, as far as fixing dents goes, but swaping the doors should be easy. Damn, they are spendy too.....

Thanks for the recall info JoshP5. Mine doesn't have the sticker showing that it's been looked at. Will the dealer do it for free if I'm not the original owner?

They should, it's a recall thing & they should do it regardless of owner if it is in range & hasn't been done according to their records. Welcome to the forums. Lots of crazycool stuff here. Just ask or search for whatever, it's been covered.

So I found some doors, like I said, but they were out of state and priced at $350 each plus $150 for shipping. That's 850 bones, which is what I was planning on paying. According to all the salvage yards (by phone) here in Boise, no one had any. So yesterday I said fugg it and drove to a couple salvage yards. The first one had one from a '02 Protege sedan that they just got, so I borrowed a crescent whench, pulled it myself and paid them $200. They sent me around the corner to another yard, and they said I was welcome to go look thru their 'door pile'. After thinking, Oh great, a friggin door pile..... I found one that looked really familiar, and after consutling the pics on my phone, decided that I had found the rear door. A cool $200 more, and I had 2 doors! That's a savings of $450 on what I was planning on! WooHoo! They are both in great shape, except one is silver and the other is Midnight Blue. I stripped them all down and dropped them off at Maaco so they can paint the jams. Once the jams are painted I can hang them on the P5 and then drop it back off so they can paint the outside and blend the paint into the fender and rear quarter. As Irony would have it, Maaco wants $450 to paint them all up! I should be good as new by the first part of next week!

BTW, if anyone needs any door parts, let me know. I have extra glass for the driver's rear, a power window set-up for the rear, both panels, both door seals, and mirror glass from the front. (Front mirror is f'ed up, but the glass and mechanisim is good.)
