Hey guys, don't flame me plz, I have used the search feature but am still fairly lost about new headers vs. inspection. This is my first car and I don't need to get it inspected till next year (that would be my first time ever). Since I haven't seen what they do I'm still lost about what is gonna happen if I replace my header. From what I have read, if I get the AWR header I have to remove the primary cat, this changes my vehicle registration from ULEV to LEV but I won't be penalized for anything right? Secondly, (keeping in mind I've never done this) will I pass the visual inspection if it is removed? If I run the risk of not passing, I'm gonna get traveler's header since that won't force me to ditch the primary cat....I know it's a long way off and a lot of text you just read, but any advice on what to expect would be very helpful =)

No, you will not pass visual inspection. Unless the person doesnt know what they're looking for, or doesnt look that closely. In DC they do check, and I wouldnt pass. You can take the primary cat and attach it around the header/downpipe (as only a shell) and pass visual. You will pass the sniffer if the motor is warmed up and you still have the second cat.

No matter what you do, it is illegal to modify the emissions system within the first 50K miles of a car, which is why all emissions systems on new cars, regardless of any othe warranty, are covered by the dealer for 50K miles regardless. So if they wanted to be a dick, then no you would not pass visual.

did you by this car new? im not to sure on the smog laws in ny..... but in cali if you buy a car new you dont have to smog it for 4-5 years. second in cali if you have changed anything out thats not factory as far as emissions...you need to have a c.a.r.b sticker to prove its legal. as far as the smoging you might pass w/your car hooked to the machine but you wont pass the visual without the c.a.r.b sticker for your headers. hope that helps, mike

no I bought the car used....ok cool, so if I get travelers header though it won't force me to ditch the first cat so would it then pass visual? Since I'm totally clueless on this. Saying it's bad mojo to modify the emissions you are just talking about the cats or the entire system including these shorty headers?

Upstate NY has no sniffer test, only in the surrounding areas of NYC. With the AWR header, you will not pass visual. The visual test verifys that all the stock emmisions stuff is still there. With Traveler's header, you should pass the visual. Also, NY State does not require any emissions test for the first two years of a new cars registered life.
