New 2017 CX-5 Revealed

Perhaps the car makers will come up with a hybrid powered liftgate, like how a DSLR lens has the A/M switch where the lens will autofocus but you can always grab the focus ring anytime to override it. It'd be great if the liftgate can be opened manually (and freely), and the motor only engages when requested (button, foot waving, ...). Of course, they'll also need to design for user errors, such as pulling/pushing on the gate when the motor is closing/opening it, too. That probably won't work for the mass, too many potential lawsuits?

I haven't been here long enough to see "babble about luxury". Though I have seen it elsewhere. Not one person that I have noticed is debating the cost of this device. We are discussing why some of us want it and others don't.
If you want luxury, buy another car. It's ridiculous to be so brand loyal to a company that... since your ready to go for a luxury car, they should make one.
Same with the liftgate argument. Get a CRV if you want that feature. Problem solved. :D

This coming from Saab brand loyalist. I've owned 3 and coerced my wife into owning 2. I understand brand loyalty. But if there's a must have feature your brand doesn't offer. Time to move on...
As a Saab brand loyalist, I have always had some form of a hatchback for a lot of years. I can count on one hand the number of times in 12 or more years that I struggled to manually open my hatch. and have fingers left over. I am sorry you are so ridiculously busy that you don't have 90 seconds to return a cart to the store.
This car may not be for you then, Mr. Busy Guy. lol

(Please read this as a tongue in cheek reply, and not trying to be a prick).

There are cart return spots, in the parking lot as well.
We want this and that and then, we complain that the mpgs are not there, where they should be.

Because that's what many people like myself do. We have enough muscle mass than an 80# back of dog food isn't a burden, and we would rather walk out to the vehicle ONCE instead of having to return a cart to the store, because we are busy, have stuff to do, and aren't the kind of slobs that leave the cart in the middle of the parking lot. A lift-gate makes this easier/simpler. That said, I will typically 1-hand an item like the dog-food over a shoulder or something and handle the hatch, but sometimes you might have a bag with a box of eggs in it in that "free" hand, and a lift gate is just infinitely useful and sensible if it's available as an option.

That said, all this babble about "luxury" and now we have people debating the added cost of a little motorized servo. This is why Mazda is an economy brand and will never be "luxury". Nor does it need to be. We need cheap get-arounds as much as we need nice tourers.

You seem to be contradicting yourself. You claim to have enough muscle mass to carry 80# of dog food but prefer to NOT use that muscle mass to open the lift gate.

Because eggs, bro! [emoji3]

I on the otherhand am not very strong and have extra mobile shoulders. So I use a cart but wouldn't want to pay extra for a liftgate. That money is better used on a mod.

That's interesting. How many extras do you have? (lol2)

You guys are like children, arguing over some trivial opinion and can't just let it go. Can we bring this thread back to discussing the 2017 CX-5 and not about the pros and cons of a powered liftgate?

Anyway, is there any info on when dealers may be getting the new '17? I think I remember reading somewhere that April was the likely month.

I keep hearing March.
Other then the comment about his name (really?) I think we're just having a bit of fun. Y so serious? Geez. ;)

But, but, but, Mom! He started it!

Hey guys. New here. I've been looking to replace my '99 Forester with a new compact SUV and one that I've really come to like is the 2016.5 CX-5. It's not perfect, of course, and I've been thinking about waiting for the 2017 even though I don't care for the look of it quite as much. But most of the upgrades are good. One concern that I noticed from looking at the pictures but that I haven't seen mentioned is what looks like the lack of a CD player in the audio deck. I know the new CRV comes w/o a CD player, and that's almost a deal-breaker for me. Can anyone conform if the upcoming CX-5 has a CD or not? Or if a CD changer can be added aftermarket to the stock entertainment center? I know CDs are on the way out, and while I appreciate the bluetooth and Android Auto compatibility, I have a very large CD collection and still prefer them for listening in the car. Thanks!

Looks gone to me in the pics.

^^ Have to wait until the full specs are released to know what all the detailed options are... No way to tell now...

At least the 2016 infotainment can be tweaked to play FLAC. The new system, with Android/Apple connection should be able to play FLAC. Rip all the CDs into FLAC and put them onto a USB drive, you're not only saving your precious discs from scratches, but also save physical storage space, easier to search/manage in the car.

A 64GB USB drive should be able to store at least 1,000 FLAC files (that's about 100 CDs). No skipping/jumping neither.

But with the crappy Bose speakers, 320kbps MP3 should do.

Not sure about the US specs, but if you look at time 0:45 in the video from post #278 of this thread, you can see a slot labeled "DVD" above the vents.

That's actually great advice. Or put them in you phone if you have an Android with an SD.

I have a 2016.5. While the USB stick would have been cheaper had it worked, I resorted to buying a 128GB iPod Touch to keep my lossless music (all in ALAC format). I just keep it connected to the car, and I have all of my lossless music available to me. I can even rip new CDs or add new files into my iTunes library and sync them over WiFi.

You can hack the infotainment to accept FLAC files if you wish, but lossless .M4A files do not work in this way. Only with an iPod/iPhone connected to USB will it work.

And regardless of what people tell you, yes, there's a major difference between 320kbps MP3 files, and CD-quality music. And yes, you can appreciate the difference even with the CX-5's speakers.

Here's some Photoshopping I did to put the current GT wheels on the upcoming 2017 to see if it makes it look better. Which it does, but it still overall looks like an old Ford Edge to me.

These appear to be the wheels on the Japanese lower-trim models:
