Need Custom Exhaust Info (Mufflers/Cat's)

I am interested/thinking about having a new exhaust be my next mod. I hear a lot of talk about the different companies and it sounds like going custom is a good way to save some bucks but I have a few questions that I need cleared up.

1. I have heard a few names dropped about different mufflers to buy but I honestly have no idea what to look for. What is the difference between one muffler from another? (besides exhaust note) Also if anyone has some they like please tell me names and reasons why.

2. Also what about cat's? IF I decide to do a full turboback what are some cat's that I should look at? (same question as above really)

3. And as you can tell IF I get full exhaust I want a cat so I dont destroy the environment or draw too much attention to myself (without causes more backfires right?) My only worry is legality with this new cat. With a new highflow single cat can I get my car smog checked with that in? Or am I going to ahve to get used to putting my stock exhaust back in?

Thanks for all help!!

1) the most common type of muffler you'll find is probably the N1 style straight-thru design. though there are other designs...the greddy evo, hks draggar, some magnaflow mufflers, borla's lazy-s design, etc. etc....check out fujitsubo's website for some really interesting mufflers. but pretty much, one muffler's as good as another. i prefer the N1 canister style...the idea being the straightest path for the least resistance. just don't get a flowmaster...i remember reading that they flow worse than some stock mufflers.

2) if you want the best, go random technology cats. expensive, but good. though most people use cheaper ones like magnaflow and carsound. i will probably go with magnaflow on my car.

3) a single one should pass emissions....at least in texas. from what i understand, they only take your car up to 20 mph to run the emissions test....you won't be pushing much air at that speed so a single cat should be fine. might wanna hang on to the stock stuff just to be safe though.

btw, if you haven't checked it out yet, run a search for "aftermarket exhausts" and check out the msp exhaust thread.

Yeah I remember there was a long post about that but I didn't remember any specifics in terms of the questions above. But now I'll go look again for that and all those audio clips so I can compare the options.

Thanks Striker

Corksport is about the same $$$ as custom. Add a cat, great combination.

Yeah I am going custom too and actually have the same questions as you. A tsudo muffler I hear sounds pretty good and is one of the cheapest you can buy. That's what I'm getting b'c you can get a carbon fiber one for only 129 bucks!! I just hope I can find a good exhaust shop that can get as close to a turboback as possible her in norcal.

Well i might get a corksport but I've seen several posts where people got an exhaust done for like $200 I belive, minus the muffler of course. Also isnt the corksport 2.4" or something like that? I think i'd want to do a 3" so I'll never have to worry about an exhaust restriction with future tuning.

Lol that website makes my head hurt. What is a good straight thru option? I saw the N1 style is like $200 at apexi but is there another option that costs a little less?

tsudo mufflers are cheap and sound really good.
You can get a carbon fiber one that looks like a high quality carbon fiber hks muffler (350 dollars) for only $129.

(upbum) 3" turbo back piping, horrible S bend in down pipe, (doughpoke leave one cat so you don't have to wipe black s*** of the back of your car everyday. My question is, Does anyone make a nice chambered muffler? I'm currently using stock racing beat, but I don't like the exhaust note of it, and I can't stand straight thru's. To many ricers in Oklahoma with them. It would be nice to have a softer deeper exhaust note. (shrug)

go take a look at the soundclips....most of them are pretty deep. the turbo will also help quiet the exhaust, but if you want quieter, get a resonator installed with the exhaust.

Magnaflow...the anti-rice

See I understand all the parts of the exhaust except the resonator. Well I've heard it quiets things down but where in the exhaust does it go? And does it inhibit flow at all?

it will go between the cat and the muffler somewhere. a good place to put it would be in that long section of straight piping after the 2nd stock cat. it will inhibit flow slightly since it's like basically putting a second muffler on the car but nothing drastic. a resonator is used to quiet the exhaust note and/or tone down that ricer buzzy sound usually associated with NA exhausts. some exhausts, like JIC's, come with a resonator already in place.

and actually, now that i think of it, there's one on the stock exhaust. duck under your car and look at the straight section of piping just after the 2nd cat. you'll a bulge in the piping, that's the resonator.

Ah I have noticed that bump before, but I didn't know what it was. I've heard pretty much all of the videos/slips from your exhaust thread and nothing has seemed to loud to me, so I dont think I'll need to add one of those.

Also I need to look more at that sight you suggested cause I'm not finding much information on my own. I see $200+ Everywhere and then $50 ones that look terrible.

I like that N1 style I see everywhere, just basic and good looking. Is $200 really what it costs for a good middle level one. And by that I mean quality (not gonna break) construction and good sound/flow? Or is there something in the middle I am missing?

I'm just new to exhausts, building up the info :)

if you're going for name brand stuff, the cheapest you'll probably find a muffler for is ~$200. apexi N1's and hks hi-power's will run about that. others will run about $250. and if you go for cf/titanium, expect to pay around $300-$350 for one.

if you're looking for something a little cheaper and don't really care about the brand name, tsudo mufflers are pretty good from what i hear; a couple of members are using a tsudo muffler. ac revolution is another decent brand. these are prolly around $150, maybe less. not a clue on the quality but i haven't heard anything bad.

search the net A LOT, you might get lucky and find a place that's having a sale. also, check out www.groupbuycenter.com. sometimes they have really good deals. a couple other places i looked at while i was searching for my muffler were www.rpmmotoring.com, www.adventon.com, www.inlinefour.com, www.wholesalehyperformance.com.

As usual your help is very much appreciated. I'll continue to look around but I'll probably end up with something like the N1 Canister style muffler. I don't care about CF or super good looking ones. I just want function and non-ass looking heh.

ALso how come you arn't mentioning your muffler as an option :). Do you like yours?

hahahahaha, i think i mention mine too much sometimes ;). but since you ask, i absolutely love mine and i wouldn't trade it for anything....ok maybe a fujitsubo but the thing better sound damn nice! it's not too quiet where you don't know you have one, but it doesn't overpower when driving around the streets. it doesn't drone bad on the highways; you can have a conversation without having to talk loud at all. it gives a really deep, mellow sound that just sounds so damn good!!! see, i talk about my exhaust too much :p

btw, 03BlkMicaSPD is running the 5zigen fireball as well, but he has a full exhaust. he said his is definitely louder than mine and sounds really pissed off.....i only wish he had some soundclips of it.

Ahaha ok Ill continue to look, i was just curious :). Looks like Im going to spend like 200ish on a muffler, more than i wanted/expected. Oh well the search continues (for a cat also.)

Hey you seem to be exhaust guru (and u actually read/answermy threads :).) Do you think/have you heard that the magnaflow cat is a good one? Or should I pay more for the expensive ones. Magnaflow sounds like a good one, just wonder what ur opinion is.

they are good and cheap. i plan to use one when i finally get around to getting a dp/mp combo made. it's either gonna be a magnaflow or carsound cat.
