Nearest Mazda Dealer is 2 hours Away...How Big a Disadvantage?

Prices vary here in Pa. SI might be $50-$60. Emissions might be another $25-30. Some areas of the state require no emissions like towards the Pocono mountains and north/northwestern areas. Agreed, can be a money grab for the shady garage owner.

Agreed. I have the same feeling toward the service department among Japanese car dealers in our area. Toyota and Honda dealers do a much better job on service, and they usually offer Express Lub area for speedy routine maintenance.

Where's the Dirty South, Tennessee? I recall back in the 70s that they had no SI program and seeing cars with no fenders out on the highways..
Has to be some kind of annual safety inspection program in place.

Hey, no offense, and it was a long time ago! I remember seeing some kind of full size Chevrolet going down the freeway, and the damned thing had no fenders or doors! And that's when some one mentioned there was no State Inspection. Up here you can't get away with having a big rust hole in your fender!

Yeah the one in Arlington is too far. I like Freeman - just that I think they fleece you if you get a loaner. I got a 120 mile CX5 sport 2016 as a loaner - so pretty new. Got groceries that day jejeje. Plus driving in DFW during office traffic is excruciatingly painful.
If I remember correctly, the service department at Hiley Mazda Arlington also didn't have the Mazda Moly oil. Not an issue with me since I usually bring my own oil for the car anyway. However it would be nice if they did stock the Moly oil. I usually have my cars serviced on a weekend, so if they give me a loaner and they don't finish working on the car, I get to keep the loaner through the weekend.
Although I don't go to dealers for any maintenance and service unless they're warranty related issues or recalls due to the reasons all have said above and also experienced many, I feel the service department at Town North Mazda in Richardson is pretty decent. They're the oldest Mazda dealer in DFW area. They're small and private owned and running the business in the good old fashioned way. My service advisor Victor is nice and knowledgeable, and he definitely doesn't play games. Highly recommend if you guys are willing to drive to Richardson! :)

I've already bought my 2017 CX-5, so in a sense I've already answered my own question. Still...

Nearest Mazda dealer is 2 hours away. This fact alone almost made me embrace the Honda CRV...until I actually saw and drove the Mazda. So I'm wondering how those of you with a similar situation deal with it. I've barely had the car a week, so there's no urgency yet, but I'm not looking forward to frequent service trips 2 hours each way.

I think the larger--and maybe more interesting question--is this: can capable local garages these days somehow get hold of whatever software they might need to troubleshoot a new Mazda? How might I judge their competence?

I'd be seriously considering other brand if there's no Mazda dealers nearby.
And no, there's no local garages which are well equipped to diagnose complicated issues and do the proper adjustments to a new Mazda, especially with all of these high-tech i-ActivSense features.

Funny how we are so used to marketing crap that nobody bats an eye at the fact the "Preferred Choice" is the clearly inferior option.
 
You mean the OBD for emissions inspection? We have that in most places here in Pa. State inspection stations have to be able to access your OBD.
they have to be able to but this one couldn't. 3 cars ahead of me and two after were OK. The dealer did it OK after $80 to turn a nut next to the E break handle.

None taken at all. You are correct, there are some issues, unsafe towing and poorly maintained trailers being a big concern.

From what I've learned here I feel more or less reassured, though I see that several of you would have bought another make, under the circumstances I described. Fortunately, I don't put a lot of miles on my cars.

Just today I was delighted to see that the CX-5 usb was able to play the 8+ hours of music I put on the flash drive, and the Bose system sounded quite good (though honestly not as good as my wife's Mark Levinson audio in her old Lexus GS 350).

The red color looks especially beautiful at dusk.

Nope - I'm quite happy with mine, as well as the other's I've visited as needed. Brother is happy with his as well. Both of us are of the opinion that we've had our best ownership experiences at the Mazda dealers around us compared to the other brands we've dealt with. Even my wife, who has come with me for a couple of service visits, has commented how easy it's been compared to the other 2 dealers she's had experience with.

With regards to the OP's question... It's your car and you have to like driving it. If the car is what makes you happy and you don't mind that the dealer is 2 hrs away then no, its not an issue. Regular / basic maintenance should be fine nearly anywhere, my only recommendation would be to use OEM filters during your oil changes. Should be able to order online if your local shop doesn't have them available. And keep all your receipts and very good records - in the event you need proof Mazda won't do a dang thing if you can't prove your case.

Make sure to turn on your oil life monitor by setting up your "Oil Change" maintenance schedule to "Flexible", especially you drive less miles per year. Thus, you can change your oil once a year or 7,500 miles, whichever comes first (for 2017, 2016(.5) is 6 months/10,000 miles with Flexible OCI), instead of 6 months in "Fixed" schedule without voiding your new car warranty. You can get oil change kit (Mazda moly oil、OEM oil filter、drain plug washer) from our sponsor Med Center Mazda (also on eBay) for the best price and more accurate flexible OCI calculation, and DIY or take them to your trusted local garage. Keep your receipt of course like Studum suggested.

So in 16 oil change can be less frequent. In Dallas 'environs' what do you expect in flexible maintenance? 10k miles?

No, not 10K miles for me. Although I use only Mazda moly oil but my own OCI is at 5K ~ 6K miles in around 9~10-month period with about 30% oil life left. I use "Flexible" OCI mainly for my reference only and making sure in line with factory maintenance schedule for factory warranty if anything happens as I change oil longer than required 6-month fixed interval.

I understand for 2017 the Flexible Oil Change screen is no longer showing "%" of oil life left but using "miles" left instead. I think it's confusing and hope Mazda eventually would change it back to "%".
