Navigation systems, am I the only one?

i travel a lot, so i request it in my rentals. I love it, plus its safer than playing with a huge map and trying to drive.

Cool; if you travel a lot. Otherwise; I see them as nice toys! I will never own a car with one.

I personally believe they are nothing more than a toy for people that have more money than sence.....give me a good old fashioned map.....pull over if you don't know where you are...and figure it out...then get back on the road and go.

Spoken like folks who have never used one. 8)
...50 yeras ago you could say the same about color TVs
...20 years ago you could say the same about microwave ovens and VCRs
...10 years ago you could say the same about cellphones

Is it a necessity, hell no. Nor are those aftermarket stereos.

My wife cannot tell north from south, she uses it all the time. *I* use it all the time.

More power to you and your maps!

(and btw, I have a pocket pc with both M$ pocket streets and NavMan; it's a bit handier to have a NAV sticking out of the dash in a format large enough to not need a stylus...)

i like them, i use mapquest at least once a month so if i had navi it'd save me that joy, but obviously it's not a must for me

Well I have a nav/gps program on my lap top I use all the time. but then again I am a trucker so I am always going somewhere I don't know how to get to. And unless you get a city map for the town your in or going to then a regular road map only shows major roads.
I love my GPS and will put my lap top n the car everytime I take a trip.

HA! True. I got mine as a toy, but it's actually been extremely useful. Would I pay $1000 to have one included in the car- probably not. But for the time and gas it's saved me already from being in my car over the last year, I'd say it's more than paid for itself. One of my buddies just got one this week. He travels around the area cleaning up small motors and reselling them in his spare time. He says it's in the top five useful gadgets he's bought, along with his digital camera and laptop computer.

If a "man" don't need a gps, then don't even need a power steering, nor ABS, nor Airgags nor even AC? LOL!!! seems most of people here are living in an old fashion way!!!!, I guess all them don't even need a car, if they can walk or ride a horse....

I refuse to pay extra for a car to have a navigation unit. Yes, I would use it, but I have no need for it. I have Google Local on my phone, so if I get lost I pull into a parking lot and get driving directions that way. It helped me out yesterday when I was trying to find a really obscure but very good European car tuning shop that is doing my tire mounting / alignment on Wednesday.

I do see that some people would definitely find a navi unit useful, but I say a nice TomTom unit or other aftermarket GPS unit is a much better investment. They are cheaper, can move from car to car, and generally are kept more updated.

Thats why I built a carputer....

I basically built myself a sweet video playing headunit for $300 and then added gps functionality for another $30 with a gps reciever. Screen is as nice as $2k+ factory models.

If you use your car to travel for work etc... or you're in a rental, then it's a good idea. Now the people who only drive to and from work who think that navigation is going to get them laid... that's a whole other story.
