Navigation and audio at the same time

Question to those who got the tech package.

Can you still continue to listen to audio while switched to the navigation option? Also will you be able to save addresses as well as plan multi-route destinations in advance? If so do you need to use the computer to edit the SD card or will it be in the navigation system?

How fast does it connect to the satellite? My current portable gps takes about a minute before it links up to the correct map.

I want to see if getting the navigation is worth it.

Apertureshot.....I have the Sport with Navigation which I installed (so easy). The voice for the Navigation plays at a volume you set when the music is on, so you can still listen to music and then be informed of a turn coming up by Tomtom.

I am not aware of a way to save future addresses on the SD card from your PC, but you can enter them on the Tomtom in your car and then retreive them from the "recent destinations" icon.

As for connecting with GPS, when I first get in my car and start it, it boots and is connected with in 30 seconds and then stays connected util you shut your car off. There are features such as traffic congestion, cameras, POI etc. FYI...you can only use the "new route" feature with the voice command when driving. Only if you are stopped can you enter it on the screen. This can be frustrating (for me at least) because Tomtom has not perfected the voice command. You can say "drive to Barnes & Noble" and Tomtom will say "drive to Dominos Pizza?". They have a bit of improvement needed. Over all it is a good thing. Just be sure to look on the internet if you want to pay less then dealer price for it.

I hope this helps you and others too.

I think you can save it from the tomtom software in the computer. Connecting to satellites is very fast, just seconds.

Thanks kelseyx, nizzy! I can get the nav for $300 through discounts. Is this something that I can install myself? Also does it come with free traffic?

Yes, Apertureshot. You can install it yourself. I did mine in 10 minutes....no kidding. Directions come with it. Unplug negative cable on battery, pull out little cubby hole to left of steering wheel in dash, unplug wires from the back side of cubby hole that will hook to the back of the Tomtom SD card reader, plug the wires in the back of the card reader, install negative battery, follow set up instructions, then push the sd card reader into your dash (after you know the connections are good and it works). Whammo....all done.

You dont even need to disconnect the battery if you are sure you wont turn the car on while plugging in the gps. I didnt and the 10 min install went down to 5 mins. Super easy.

Is that what that utterly useless pocket is truly for????!!!! Ha, too bad I have no need or interest in a Nav system, I'd get that thing out of there in an instant. I was wondering why it was so poorly designed for a cubby: Odd shape, level with the car and not very deep, it gave me little confidence that it would hold anything or keep it in there once it did. Now I know, back to the regular scheduled programming...

No doubt was that cubby useless! I did keep it for a paper weight though:)

I used to put my garage door opener in the cubby on my mazda3. That one was a little deeper. I tried it on my cx5 it actually fits perfectly with the buttons facing out but it needs something behind it to so it doesnt flip when pushed.

Ah to have a garage... *sigh* Use a small piece of urethane foam maybe, like the tear away stuff from a Pelican case or similar...

I am trying to install my Nav to CX-5. The step I don't understand is that "Grasp the pocket assy from the back side of the lower panel and press it out to the vehicle rear". I opened the hood and checked to see where the pocket assy is. I know I see the front side of the Pocket assy right below the steering. But where is it's back side? I couldnt figure it out.

Where should I look for the pocket assy from the rear side of the lower panel? Am i doing the right thing by opening the hood and looking for it? (I was just trying to see the Pocket assy. I will disconnect the battery before I really start the procedure). Please help. Thanks

You only need to pull the cover off inside the car, the leads required are behind the cover.

Oh, because the instructions say 'from the rear of lower panel'. Darn! Now, noob question, please bear with me. Do I just have to use some flat head screw driver and push outward at the sides and then pull the assy off from the front side? Would this not a nice car theft candidate as its so easy to take it off? :-)

See my edit above.

Some one did post how to remove the cover, it wasn't easy, but I can't find the post. Sorry.

Ok. Thanks anyways. I may ask a couple of local shops if they can do it for less, may be $50 or something. Dealership rips off, as usual...

Nizzy1115, please tell me how I can pull out that cubby hole. Just use a flat head screw driver or something and then push the edges out first, then pull the whole thing out? Coz, instructions ask us to push this thing from the rear of the lower panel. Also, are you absolutely sure that we dont need to disconnect the battery negative?

Don't use a screwdriver. Use your grippy hands and pull hard straight out. I think so long as you don't turn your car on you can safely plug it in without disconnecting the battery. But if your worried just disconnect it.

Thanks. I will try with my bare hands :-). Also, I found a opening right beneath the hood-release lever. I was able to touch the pocket assy through this opening which is located in the lower panel. May be this is what mazda instructions ask us to use and push the pocket assy out to the rear of the vehicle. However, I am not sure if I can really do it this way without screwing up the wires or something. Thanks again for ur response. I will try and report back how my Nav install went through.

Alright, I am done with the Navigation installation this morning. Once I took the Pocket assy out, it took only 10 mins to install the Nav unit. The toughest part for me was to take off the Pocket assy. Here is what I did.
1) Disconnected the negative terminal of the battery and wrapped the cable with a cloth (just to avoid it to contact any metal surface while hanging free).
2) I tried to use my bare hands to pull the pocket assy. Also tried to use a small flat head screw driver wrapped with a piece of cloth and pry open. Both times, I failed. Because, the pocket assy was tightly held by the panel. And I didnt have any grip to pull it out.
3) So, I looked underneath the small opening right beneath the hood-release-lever and used a flash light to see what is in there. I was able to see the pocket assy and the 3 cables (USB, +B/ACC and GPS antenna cables) that are connected to it. First I tried to push the pocket assy by inserting my hands through the opening in the lower panel. It was tough to push it because a) the assy was secured so tightly by the clips b) the cables were in the way so I couldn't get a good grip. So, I removed one of the cables (gps antenna cable) from the pocket assy and now I had a little bit more grip. Then I grasped the entire pocket assy's back and then pushed real hard. Voila, it f**ing popped right out giving the back of my hands a couple of scratches with some blood :-). So, be careful while u push it out. THIS WAS THE HARDEST PART for me!!!
4) Now, I removed the other 2 cables (USB and +B/ACC) from the back of the assy.
5) I removed the Wiring harness clip. Now the pocket assy is free of any cables/wires. I put aside the pocket assy (wheww!!!).
6) Now, I took the Nav unit and connected all the 3 cables first and then connected the wiring harness clip.
7) I toyed around 2-3 times to align the Nav unit with the four clip holders on the panel. Then, pushed the upper 2 clips on the edges and then the lower 2 clips. The Nav unit snapped right in - perfect fit.
8) Used the flash light again and looked through the opening under the hood-release-lever and ensured if the Nav unit is in place with all the cables attached.
9) Connected the negative terminal of the battery.
10) Performed all the checks as mentioned in the instruction manual (turning ON the push button start, pressing the power/audio button, etc., etc.,)
11) Now, I disconnected the battery negative terminal again to reset (like it said in the instructions!).
12) Then, just followed the instructions to set the power windows, moonroof, TPMS etc., I had to set the time, set all the preset radio stations, my trip meter and avg. mpg were all reset bcoz of the battery disconnection!
13) I took a test drive by using the GPS and it was all GREAT!!! (rockon)

Thanks for everyone who responded for my questions...(2thumbs)
