11,000 miles on 2008 mz3 with 2.3 engine. In stop and go traffic the power steering went out. Checked manual and referred to power steering trouble indicator light coming on dashboard. Tried to reset by turning ignition off and on as manual suggested. Overnight, it resetted and has been ok. So what caused this problem? Is it engineered into the engine to shut off power accessories when engine is getting hot? Anyone have same problem?

the 2.3 has a fully hydroelectric pump to provide power assist steering. it does not run of the serp. belt. if the pump gets to hot it is designed to shut off until it gets back to normal temps. i had the same thing happen to me leaving my car running for 30min. let it sit for about 15 minutes and its fine. its because the pump is still pumping but u aren't steering and your not allowing any fluid to be cooled by the cooler at the front of the car. its normal, just kinda sucks. but its cool because when it is working it provides awesome road feel.
