My turn...LSD took a big crap.

There are differences. The Mp3's got "normal" protege transmissions. The MSP's got the "upgraded" transmissions. There is something wrong with customs transmission or he wouldn't be taking it apart, however it is not visual in that picture.

Upgraded as in the synchros and modified forks correct? But I thought that applied to all 2002.5 and later protege's.

I thought we discussed this in the other tranny thread, I believe I mentioned that the 5th gear/synchro. design was different also.... I may not have though. Its hard to remember everything about different model years and not get it all jumbled up. They don't actually tell us they are differences, the only way we know is what we see and what the parts. dept tells us.

Don't remember that... but that sucks that they aren't more forthcoming on information overall.. but I guess what can you do!

Later and thanks!

Steve

Well...more s*** is popping up now :( I'm getting white smoke out of the tail pipe after I left off a hard run. I hope I didn't blow the headgasket. What do you guys think?

white = coolant.. so i guess you might as well port your head when you pull it off..see you just made HP by blowing a gasket...different way of looking at it...

dont feel so bad, i got to upgrade my tranny fluid when the trans and LSD blew... (yupnope) oh wait, that happend to you too, man that sucks buddy. double fun (homework)

Mine has started doing a similar thing today. After letting off the gas on a hard run about 5seconds later it blows white smoke for a second or two. It's so hard to tell where it is smoking from when your doing 90+. However I doubt it is a head gasket. I'm going to be checking a few things tommorow.

I'm raising a beer in hopes of an easy fix to us both, lol.

Lets hope you find out what it could be :) The car runs great that's why I wasn't sure. This started happening after I messed with the tranny yesterday. Probably a coincidence though. I had to remove the maf and the cold pipe of the IC, but my maf is on the pressure side right off of the TB. If it was a boost leak we would see black smoke. People tell me it stinks too. It could also be a coolant leak through the turbo seals into the exhaust?

I'm running right around 17-18psi daily right now, so it was/is in the back of my mind. But I have no/very little coolant loss and zero driveability problems. It only happens on occasion and not everytime.

I have a kick ass Headgasket leak detector kit at work that you put your coolant in and add a chemical that reacts to combustion gasses. If it turns yellow than there are small combustion traces, if it turns green then you have a huge problem. I hope it stays blue.

Well I only had like a half hour to myself today to work on it. I used the combustion leak detector and that stayed blue, which is a good sign. I then pulled the plugs and did a compression check. 178, 183, 184, 177. Which is good. The plugs have def. gone through a beating, (this is the third motor they have been in). So I'm gonna order a set (maybe some of those "brisk" plugs.)
I pulled the upper intercooler pipe, that had some residue in it, but doesn't mean all that much right now. I added some tracer dye to the cooling system, and marked the level. I won't be driving the car at all this weekend but come Monday I am gonna put a few miles on it.

At this point I am not too worried, but it will bother me to no end so I am going to have to make some time to figure it out.

Thanks for the update. It could be a blow by of coolant/oil through the turbine exhaust housing seal?

I remember what I did right before this started happening. I was trying to unscrew the main gear shaft nut(32mm one), but it just kept on spinning through even with the brakes applies and in gear. I heard compression building in the engine I'm guessing. When I went to start the car after I put everything back together, the boost gauge was showing like 3psi and wouldn't start on the first try. I think I built some compression in the engine by spinning the gear shaft and causing damage? But the compression should just escape when the valves open no?

Later.

Custom, something is weird with that scenario.... but even so, turning the motor dry shouldn't have caused you any issue.

So the MSP LSD Diff is a POS. Do you think Mazda will ever recall them? (yeah right) They obviously know there is a problem since they made a new type. I was just wondering why so many people are worried about the LSD not being covered under warranty? Is it because of their mods? I have an Exhaust and CIA among other Mods and my Dealer hasent said a word about warranty voiding. The Service manager loved how the CIA sounded.

A little update.

We replaced the broken oil tray yesterday. I also replaced the Spec pressure plate and the T.O. bearing. Car drives like new now :D However, I still have the same noise from the tranny as I did before. Plus I'm leaking fluid out of the damn pass side seal (mad) So I have to pull the driveshaft and replace that. Sucks.

Update.

Completely disassembled the tranny today to check out the noise problem, because it has gotten really bad. What I found is a cracked shaft bearing at the base. It also was burnt. The top of where it was resting on the gear was also scored and burnt along with the other side of the gear. I've been sitting on brand new bearings for the last 5 months or so and finally decided to replace them all. What a great feeling it is to have a quite tranny again! It no longer vibrates like it did before from 2.5k-3krpm. Also, it no longer has the "sling-shot" effect when releasing the clutch while shifting from 1st-2nd gear. Smooth as butter! I pretty much have a brand new tranny...at least that's what it feels like lol.

I've decided to try the Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid. For some reason the tranny doesn't want to shift into 1st and reverse if I first don't put it into either 3rd or 4th gears when the car is on. If the car is off the tranny goes through ever gear without a problem. However, once the car is moving, the shifting is very smooth. Could it be the fluid? Or did I forget to do something while putting it back together? It feels like the gears are waiting for the syncros to catch before they engage. I guess I can live with that for now...as I'm not about to take the tranny out again if I don't have to lol. And even in that case I'll be thinking about it a few times before I do anything any time soon lol. Another negative is that I broke one of the three rear MM bracket bolts with its thread stuck inside the tranny :( I was running out of time so I had to put it back as is. Furthermore, the other two bolts are kind of barely holding because the threads inside the tranny are almost stripped too! This is causing clutch chatter. I used thread locker hoping that it might be of some help for now. Does anybody have any suggestions for solving this problem? I just didn't have the time today to run to a store to buy a thread repairing kit or something of that sort.

So basically I went through all this bulls*** because MPNick put the tranny back together without replacing the oil tray that he broke in the process of working on my tranny.

I'll get a pic of the bearing soon if anybody is interested.

Later.
