My New 71 Datsun 510

Update.

Went to San Jose monday the 30th, picked up a 200SX dogleg tranny (w/ custom cross member!) and a long tube header for $300! The Tranny was rebuilt in March, and then the guy started an SR20 swap. So yay for my car. Better hwy mileage should be great.
The shift pattern will take some getting used to however.

I took my car to the shop I used to work at on Friday and put the tranny in.
It only took about 1.5 hrs with the car on the lift. Had to trim the shifter hole about 1/4" to the front, as this car was not originally a M/T.
Sorry, no pics, we were in a hurry, but I will post what I did shoot on my phone later.
The tranny is a lot more fun and SUPER notchy in the shift gates. (shorter throw and less free play too!)

The 4-1 header will go in when I have the $ for the new exhaust. i will thermal wrap it in the mean time.
Anyone know how much thermal wrap costs?

did you fix your brake problem? a cheap way to go might be steel braided brake lines and new brake pads

will update from home this afternoon. I'm on my phone now.

lol. At least you will have an update. Mine is at least back in the garage and my four door has been sold off :( I cried when it left. Once I get my engine hoist fixed I can test fit my motor.

Just an update.

The car has been a PITA. I have either a bad H/U that likes to create a short even when off, or I have a bad Starter solenoid that creates a short randomly. When the short is about to occur, my tach dances all over the place and buzzes.

LAME. I hate electrical problems.

I also still need to figure out what is wrong with the left headlight being dim and shutting off with the brights on.

Not sure if you have looked but usually a dim headlight means a bad ground. Not surprising in a car that old.

UPDATE!

So A semi-major electrical problem is keeping me from driving the car, I almost have it resolved.

My wheels are on 8 week backorder.

No one will buy the wheels I am selling so I can pay for those aforementioned wheels...

I dont have the money to convert my 280zx struts to coil overs yet, working on it....

I want to convert to rear disc, should cost about $100 with pick n pull calipers & rotors, and a $60 pair of custom brackets from some guy in SoCal.

Any words of encouragement are appreciated....

Later....

Change of plans, for ease of parts and aftermarket support, as well as what should be an easier fit, I am gonna go with the VQ35 from a USDM 350Z or G35.
And I should be able to get a 6 speed.
There is a company in SoCal that does the swap in 240SX's
www.vqswap.com
And some of their parts should make it easier, like the shorter shift perch/linkage.
And I should be able to easily make the SR power w/ a N/A motor on pump gas + more torque.
My fears now are No $$ and no time, I got a new job....

Kickass that will be a bad ass car man.

If there is a 'kit' by the time I get back, my KA plans may have to change.

I dont know if there will ever be a "Kit."
By my best guesses and with the info I have, a VQ swap will be easier than an SR20DET by far. I think there will even be room for an actual belt driven fan, but I would prolly go electric anyway for the power savings..

Oh update!

Today the alternator died, again. Autozone said "this is the last one" they will replace. I say if you sell crap with a lifetime warranty, you better sell good crap otherwise replace it as often as I ask. I would like to buy a new alternator someday, but the reman's will have to do for now.
I hould go put it in now....

I think I found some camber plates @ a steal!

camberplates.jpg

They are only $75 and look well built.
Designed for s13 and s14 240sx's but are a direct fit to a 510 coil over conversion.

those look like megans. i've heard they're a decent company, but i havent had any experience with them

Any updates with your wiring gremlins?

Oh yeah the wiring gremlins are pretty much solved. See the last few posts here.

I thought those camber plates looked like the Megans or the Cusco part, but in actuality I think they are knockoffs, which makes me wary of them. If they work, I really dont care @ $95 shipped.

I can't remember how much I bought my Teins for. Glad you go the gremlins fixed. Can't wait to get back to the states and work on my baby.

got my camber plates. they look super nice.
I like blue.

now I just need to figure out how they attach to 280ZX strut inserts...

This is pics of my bro's he got two years ago. It was stolen last year. Apparently someone wanted it more than him. It's Mustard Yellow with an SR20 swap (non turbo). Magnaflow exhaust, with plans on carbeurating. He put Konig Rewinds on it with some super soft tires. That thing f*&%ing flew! It was a blast to ride and drive in. It also had limo tint.
