My MS3 is getting a friend

WARNING. LONG POST.

Not displacing the Mazdaspeed3 yet, but the Grey Ghost will soon have to take turns as my daily driver with the last car I will ever buy. I'll be hanging the "for sale" sign on the Speed3 perpetually until I find a buyer- probably 2-3 years down the road, I imagine. Much as I love it, I just don't need 2 cars.

Here's the scoop...

Ever since I was 13 years old & my Dad came within a millisecond of buying a 1985 Toyota Supra, but had to settle for a Celica GT-S, I have had a raging woody for Supras. (He had to skip the Supra because GEICO classified it as a Sportscar and refused to insure it- they were anal back then. It was only a 145-hp naturally aspirated straight 6, for cryin' out loud.)

I owned a 1990 Supra Turbo for a while, replaced several head gaskets & had a pro do a full engine rebuild on the 7M-GTE (turbo) powerplant, and it blew up again less than a year later. Ditched it like a bad girlfriend with the herps. Regretted it ever since.

For a few years I have been contemplating either buying a MKIV ('93-'98) Supra with the powerful & reliable 2JZ-GTE twin turbo engine, but they are ridiculously expensive. So I have been looking into buying a MKIII ('86.5-'92) and replacing the 7M-GTE with the 2JZ-GTE. Been doing a LOT of research, and decided that it might be wiser to go for a 1JZ-GTE, which was the forerunner of the famed 2JZ-GTE, but was never used for the U.S. market.

7M-GTE = 3.0 litre inline 6, single turbo, 232 hp stock
1JZ-GTE = 2.5 litre inline 6, twin turbo, 280 hp stock
2JZ-GTE = 3.0 litre inline 6, twin turbo, 320hp stock

The 1JZ-GTE was used in the MKIII Supra, but only in Japan & Australia. But the front end is the same, and the 1JZ-GTE motor mounts line up perfectly with the subframe on all MKIII Supras, regardless of their country of origin.

The 1JZ-GTE doesn't have the 1,400 hp potential of the 2JZ-GTE, but it'll handle 5-600hp before you have to start tearing down the engine to go with forged internals, etc. I doubt I'll ever want to go past 4-500hp, so I could save a good chunk of change by using the 1JZ-GTE- it's cheaper to acquire, and bolts up more easily into the MKIII frame, so less labor involved.

Well, as I searched for a nicely maintained MKIII Supra to begin my project, I found one already done that looks like a wiener. It's a 1992 Supra, originally a non-turbo. The previous owner had the 1JZ-GTE swap done, and done right- he not only swapped in the turbo gauge cluster, but the turbo 5-speed transmission, drive shaft & rear end.

This particular car is a little rare for 2 reasons. First, 1992 was a short production year, as Toyota shut the line down early to re-tool for the MKIV production run. Plus, 1992 was the only year that the MKIII was available in Teal, which is a gorgeous color on this car, IMHO. Nobody knows for sure how many teal MKIII's were actually made, but likely less than 3-400, total, as production estimates for the entire model year range from 1,400-2,100.

And I sent my deposit to a very helpful gent in Kentucky today. I'll be flying up & driving home over one of the next 2 weekends. Wheelbase & weight are nearly identical to the Mazdaspeed3. With the 1JZ-GTE engine, horsepower is also almost identical, comparing stock to stock. The 1JZ-GTE, however, should add 2-3mpg above the Mazdaspeed3. Go figure- add 2 cylinders, step back 17 years, and get better mileage without sacrificing power. Oh, and I switch from FWD to RWD.

The car was owned by this gentleman for several years, but he gifted it to his 20-something son for a while. The kid had a bit of the boy racer in him & added some gaudy carbon fiber bits, all of which have been removed & replaced with the original parts- which his Dad insisted be stored carefully in the garage. Thank gawd.

Known issues I will have to deal with:

1- Valve seals will need to be replaced, as the car will blow some blue smoke on start-up occasionally. Not horribly unusual for this engine.

2- Speedo reads about 10-15% slower than actual. Will get that corrected, probably 1st on the list, actually.

3- Paint, while shiny & all in the photos, is showing some age & will require a respray before too long.

4- Radio antenna stuck at half mast. I've replaced this unit before, no sweat.

So... pics...

Ignore the carbon fiber disaster between the windshield & front bumper...

Fresh leather in the interior. Score!

Got a fart can HKS Drager exhaust... will have to see how it sounds & decide if it can stay... I will not have my car screaming "riceboy!" from half a mile away... bad enough that it looks like a grapefruit launcher...

White gauge faces aren't for everyone, but I like them... the a-pillar pod, well, that may have to go eventually. Too ricey.

Nice clean install of the 1JZ. If I hadn't told you it didnt belong there, most of you would never notice, right?

NICE!

it's pretty cool that you found one pretty close to what you were looking to build, with a lot of the hard parts worked out. you can always paint that hood, if it's lighter, i'm sure. it sure is nice to have the stock bits saved, isn't it?

are you planning to do anything to it? different wheels (my fist choice. i always thought those years of supra looked nice on BBS wheels)... engine mods? they were nice, well built cars, IMO. fun to drive, and very refined for the time period.

i think it is high time toyota made a serious performance car(s) again. high time indeed. and no, i don't really consider anything lexus offers as a true performance car... sorry. i want something we can all enjoy.

The "CF" hood & headlight covers were actually swapped back to original Teal parts, so no worries there. (CF makes me cringe, personally, so I was glad to hear this) And the teal parts were only off the car for less than a year. Still a good match. But I'll be looking to repaint the entire car when the time is right. Torn between a 100% OEM respray, and possibly adding some metal flake or pearl effects. The teal was so rare that I almost hate to screw with it, even a little.

The 5-Zigen wheels currently on my MS3 will end up on the Supra, MS3 will get its stockers back, and I will auction off the MKIV Supra wheels that are currently on the Supra.

Won't be jumping into engine mods right away. Most of the 2JZ engine parts & upgrades either apply directly to the 1JZ, or there are equivalent options available. But I want to do a LOT of reading before I add any power, beyond whats already there. After my 5-year odyssey with my original MKIII 7M-GTE, and the resulting heartbreak, I don't want to do anything that I'll regret later.

Luckily, 1JZ/2JZ tuning shops abound in FL, so when I am ready, I can get things set up & dialed in properly.

Appreciate the comments. I've always thought the Supra had a certain elegance about it, both cosmetically and mechanically. I love the smoothness of a straight 6. And of course, its RWD, which a lot of folks prefer.

Keep us updated with new pics and make a build thread in the "my other car is not a Mazda" section of the OT forum.
Looks like a very clean, nice start for a project. I hope you have fun with it
I like Supras as well, but if I were picking a project car from the same era as the 86-92 Supra, I would have to go with an FC RX7. They're just more my style.

LOL... I obviously don't explore this site enough. I had no idea there was an OT section, much less a "My other car is not a Mazda" forum. I tend to read all of the MS3 section, and the Florida forum, then move on. (I am active on far too many forums, spreading myself thin.)

I'll go looking for that "Not a Mazda" forum and start a build thread once I get my hands on the car.

Love those Mazda rotaries as well. Good choice.

sounds good man. I want some pics. without the cf crap!

He took a couple of pics for me about a month ago, but it was dusk, and the car hadn't been washed in a month or two. Here's one.

I'll get more good pics once I get it home, detail it, and find a nice spot. It'll be heading South with me either over New Year's or the following weekend, depending on how fast I can get the funds transferred during a holiday week.

Where are you in tampa? Love supra's also, I want to subscribe to your build thread!!

I'm actually just South of Tampa, in Riverview (That's 10 miles South of Brandon). I work in Temple Terrace, at Telcom Park off Fletcher & I-75, plus I have friends all over Tampa, so ths car will be out & about frequently.

Can't say how quickly my "build thread" will get interesting, as most of the heavy building is already done. But I'll chronicle all repairs & upgrades there as they happen. Promise!

Congrats on the find Bill! I know you always wanted a Supra again by the way you talked about it. I almost considered buying another 05-06 GTO instead of my MS3 (after my first one got lemoned) but I didn't want to risk it. Almost 2 years later, I wonder if I should have as it was a wonderful car.

Now, i'm looking into used STI's. I have found a few 06-07 STI's with 30k-50k on them that are still going in the mid 20's. If I can knock the price down to $20k OTD and a low interest rate, i'd be willing to trade the MS3 in for that, and just "rebuild" the car as parts fail, with better, modded parts. I've been finding it silly lately that I bought a brand new car, only to start modding and changing stuff. But it's an addiction I suppose. But by the looks of my trek, (interest rates, asking prices too high), this may never happen.

so if you're going to paint it anyway, why not slap a few coats on that CF hood? i can see how CF is a generally flamboyant appearance item, but don't those have long and therefore heavy hoods?

that is, if they decide to send the CF hood with the car in the first place. if you have to buy it from them separatly i guess id say forget it

1. Some day I plan to search out a 91 Turbo Supra Targa to buy. Well that or a late 80's Alfa spider. Both will of course be bigger problems than herpes.

2. Herpes is not the monster deal people think. About 3/5 sexually active folks have it. Most never of super rarely show any outbreaks. That is one reason why it spreads so easily, people are unaware they are infected.

Ther CF hood is long gone, thank goodness. Tred to make that clear, but it was a long post, so, yeah. :D

muh bad...thought your bold print only meant they replaced the stuff for you before you go pick it up, and didn't actually get rid of it completely

No worries, mang. The current owner of the Supra is in his 50's & disabled- can't work. So for several years, he has been disassembling & parting out MKIII Supras on eBay. The minute he removed those parts, they got auctioned off.

If they'd been left on the car, they'd have gotten painted ASAP once I got my mitts on it.

Booked my flight yesterday. Flying out to Lexington today, should have the Supra signed over to me & headed South on I-75 by 2-3pm. No way I'll make it back to Tampa, since I've been awake since 4 p.m. (and I work all night)

Guessing the Supra and I will be spending New Year's Eve in either Chatanooga or Hotlanta.

From here on out, I'll discuss the Supra in the "My other car is not a Mazda" forum. Thanks for the supportive comments.

Depending on how long it takes to sell the MS3, I may either decide to keep it, or sell & get a small beater pickup truck as a hauler & backup transport. Still debating that whole scenario. Love the MS3, but MS3 & Supra seem a bit redundant in the same driveway.

Oh, and for good measure... pics taken yesterday after the seller washed it... just to show the current (original) hood, etc.:
