My Hypertech Impressions

Had the tuner with me when I picked the car up but it wouldn't load as I needed an update even though I had updated the tuner the day I got it. Brought it in to work today, updated it and then loaded the tune on the car.

I removed 0-60 restriction and picked the K&N intake. Haven't had a chance to drive it yet, but I can't wait to go out for lunch!

I ordered the Hypertech this past weekend. I'm looking forward to having it installed on my car. I just want to set it and forget it. I don't plan on over moding my engine.

My car has the Mazdaspeed CAI, should I go with that tune?

I hear some people like the Nano tune better than the mazdaspeed CAI and the Cobb.

If thats the intake you have then you should select that one, The only reason others, Like myself are using the NANO is because the Cobb has some issues that are being worked on HT at the moment. An it was the one we where told by HT to use till they came out with the Cobb.

Yeah, that some people is me. I have an AEM CAI and I was fiddling around with tunes. The Mazdaspeed tune made little to no difference, no surprise there. Then I tried the Nano tune and was pleasantly surprised with it.

The AEM tune is really strong at 3000 and through the midrange. I felt it tailed off a bit between 5 and 6k. The Nano tune ran cleaner and more evenly to 6k without tapering off, at the cost of maybe being a hair less strong right at 3K.

I'd say start with what you have but, don't be afraid to fiddle around with the the tuner, it's a rock-solid interface and hasn't failed or given grief yet.

Darth,

Thanks for the great feedback.

The only difference in the air intake options is the MAF calibration. The actual tune, the fueling, timing, and other corrections are the same. What you are experiencing with the Nano option is the MAF calibration is a little lean with your intake. That will cause an increase in boost, but also results in a bit more aggressive spark timing, and leaner air/fuel ratios, which is not desirable for engine and turbo life.

The Mazdaspeed and the AEM are the same exact intake, so the MAF calibrations are the same for both intake options.

HAHAHA Owned

Listen asshole, I know they are the same intake, I just tried it out to see, hence the "no surprise" line in my OP. Now please (fu)

Thanks Chris, I know that MAF cals are all that can change here, with intake tunes. The car is so pig fat anyway, I doubt I'll be leaning it out too much using Nano. I'll DL AFRs and see what that says.

See this DL from earlier: The car is still dipping down near 10:1 near 6000, which I'm not bitching about too much; I think the Cobb canned tunes push the AFR too hard right out of the box.

Best HT link so far, Props Ganque

Cant get the link to work sorry,

Chris thanks for the explanation. The fact that you come on these forums and try to answer our questions helped me in my decision to purchase the Hypertech. I think all of us are hands on and like to know how this stuff works.

Lavoiespeed3 I think you misunderstood Darth and posts like that are not needed. People are just trying to help one another here.

You can now add me to the HP tune believers. I installed the HT tune today and all I can say is WOW! The car has totally changed for the better. I don't think I need any more power than that. It's got so much power that I have to re-learn how to use the gas pedal for DD. I just press on the pedal a little and the car goes so much faster than before. I don't know if it's just me or what but the car even sounds louder than before. I think it's because its putting out more power.

The car should have come from the factory like this, but I think Mazda did not tune the car this way because it would have been too much for some people and scare them away. This car is now a Wild Out Of Control Child.

I've never had any other tune on the car so I can't compare to anything else, the only thing I have to compare the HT tune to is the stock tune and the HT tune is so much faster, power is there across the all RPM's. Great value for $323. I now feel like I have a great all around car and it's also good to know that I have a safe tune. I can't wait to take the car back to the track.

It's the same thing for me when I installed my AP tune

Nice to hear man Welcome aboard,,LOL Did you use your intake option or pick the CP-E?? (wrc)

Been driving with the tune for a few days now and I love it! I don't really drive my car hard so I can't speak for WOT throttle differences, but the overall driveability has improved significantly. I've got ~1000 highway miles to drive over the next 2 weeks so I'll be monitoring MPG to see if there's any difference between stock.

OK guys just got of the phone with a local place to set this up on a Saturday, it's 75$ for 6 runs 3 before and 3 after.. If we get 3-5 the price drops to $60. 10$ a run is really a GREAT price IMO. Let me know what guys can make this..

Local is Malden MA, I'm in Waltham MA.. PM me.

Well guys just got back from the dyno and EH not really impressed. Yes the overall drive of the car is a lot better but the numbers are,, You decide,

HT Tune( CP-E Nano) WHP 284@5300 and WTQ 291@4800, I really thought I would have hit over 300. :(

Stock was WHP 273@5500 and WTQ 284@4600..
So I only picked up 11 WHP and 7 WTQ with the HT..Not what I was expecting at all.

The Tuner said the HT A/F was unsafe being that rich at 5200 its in the 9's, The stock tunes A/F looked a little better staying in the 11's 5600. Either way he told me the car would have broken well into the 300's if the A/F was not so "pig rich.

But maybe the HT only shines on a stock car. The other car with me made on HT( MSP CAI Tune) 271 WHP and 299 WTQ!! And shock his numbers where down to 236WHP and 259 WTQ. Special thanx to Boston Dyno and Tont :)

According to the HT dyno charts, your whp gain is about right, but the the wtq is not even close.

My car is the other car that made it to the dyno on Saturday with anm6's car. My motor is stock other than the Mazdaspeed CAI, Cobb intake and the HT flash.

Basically I picked up 1 horsepower at the top end vs. the stock tune, however I did better in the midrange, see below and attached dyno files.

Overall:
Horsepower: 271 vs. 270 a gain of 1 HP
Torque: 297 vs. 273 a gain of 24

At 4200 RPM's:
Horsepower: 238 vs. 207 a gain of 31
Torque: 297 vs. 258 a gain of 39

In addition to what the tuner told anm6 about the fuel dump, he also told me that with the HT tune my car is dumping so much gas that it misfired/dropped spark. It shows up on the attached dyno sheets at around 5800 RPM's. He also said the best thing would be for HT to do a new tune as another option that runs leaner up top and keeps the AFR's consistent around 11.25, instead of dumping gas and going much lower.

I also attached a dashhawk log from last week on the street not at the dyno. It show the AFR's going to 10 and a little lower. Boost to 19 one time. Fast run not much logging time. Please let me know if things don't look right.

I'm glad I dyno the car, it was interesting and I'm leaning about tuning. I like having the HT, it's just I wished it was perfect. Maybe no tune is perfect.
