My first Mod (Cams)

Alright everyone, I finally have completed my first aftermarket upgrade to by P5. I installed the Mazdaspeed Intake and Exhaust Cams and the TiiPoint Adjustable Cam Gears. It wasn't too fun. I have two things that were of concern to me, one that still remains, the other was resolved:

After intalling the cams and the adjusted cam gears, I started her up. Not too good. She ran, for a while, then couldn't keep a steady idle and just began to die when no pressure was applied to the gas. That was the least of my problems.

My major concern was the knocking!! After a few moments of inspecting where the knocking was coming from, I realized that it was coming from the guard that covered the cam gears, and not the cams themselves. You can imagine my relief to this discovery. Nevertheless, I was still not happy about the knocking. So, I took the valve cover back off and inspected the cam gears for anything that could be hitting the cover. After a thurough inspection on the valve cover, I noticed a sensor that is inside the cover for the cam gears, had a worn spot on it, and some dust sprayed on the cover. I realized that the new exhaust cam gear was hitting the sensor. So I took off the sensor and placed some thick washers on the bolt to bring the sensor more away from the gear and walla! No more knocking.

Last concern. I can't get the car to idle. It will for the warm up phase, then after it's warmed up, she dies. What's the deal? So I just need to get my timing adjusted? Will I be able to take it to any shop and have them fiz the timing problem? I hope that's all it is, cuz it was fun driving home from my friends garage, keeping my foot on the gas and brake at the same time. Not cool. Has anybody else done this sort of mod and did you have a similar problem? Any help on getting my car to idle again would be of great worth to me.

I hope the information above about the knocking is of help to anyone installing these gam gears.

Oh, one more thing. Those spark plug wires are a pain in the a$$! It's not so fun getting those things back in tight! I dread the day when I need to pull those off again for any reason.

Hope to get some help on my idle isue.

First thing is, yes, the timing. check that first before anything. make sure everything is lined up before you start messing with the cam gears.

did mark everything before you started taking things off?

take it to speedgear motorsports. speak to gavin or mike. they may be able to help you out.

Speadgear Motorsports... is that the shop near the bicycle factory? And I did make sure everything was lined up. Took pictures and everything. Double and triple checked my pictures.

DAWM!?! all that in your garage? i going pay your house a visit lol. good job on your mod :) peace - chris

lol... sure, you can come over right after I tell you where it is..
I'll hit up the shop this Friday. Gonna be kind of busy for the rest of the week. Thanks a lot starflare... hey, by the way.. any you guys in the Pro5 club?

yup im in. u in? PRO 5 (dave) started it to my knowledge? theres also dumbkeola, dakinep5, rmedoc, evade, dumbkeola, and lot others. sorry if i missed anyone. u planning on joining? - chris

If you want to get technical about it the intake cam in not Mazdaspeed. :D It's just the FS-ZE cam.

If I were you I'd put the cams in by themselves (take off the cam gears). Make sure the car is drivable. Then reinstall the gears as directed.

so how much are the CAM/Gears supposed to gain anyway? I'm curious...

technically cam gears don't increase HP just having them there. tuning them may or may not result in a power gain or loss somewhere in the power band.

well yeah... I guess I should have asked, what are the expected gains *after* tuning... I know that simply bolting on new gear sin't going to give you much...

but new Cams with a littel more aggressive specs, and good tuning with some adjustable gears has to be good for an estimated _____ horsepower somewhere. Beter down low? better up high with a loss down low? better all around?

gimme a reason to be jealous :D

Unfortunately, the cams I put in were the mazdaspeed cams from SR Motorsports. I wanted to get my hands on some custom cams, but was not patient enough. I also paid too much for them 400 bucks for both. The gain is not that noticeable because that's all I've done. No intake and no exhaust. I'm sure when I get those installed, I will be able to see a difference. But starflare is right, the only noticable difference will be from the adjustable cam gears. I am going to follow your advice and take the gears out, re-align the cams and start her up to see if it's adjusted properly, then I'll put the gears back in and fine tune it. I've really got to learn to be a more patient man.

Yeah, I've been trying to get ahold of someone to meet up with you guys. I've already met Dave and he just recently emailed me that he might be soon setting up a cruise when his car gets put back together.

Would everyone agree that with headers (retain second cat), FS-ZE intake cam and mazda speed exhaust cam, high flow muffler and cold air intake - that 150 bhp is attainable?

This car could really use about 170bhp or more - I'll think you all agree..

Other than going turbo (daily driver)...there really isn't much out there yet, is there?

Correct. Turbo's the only way to go right now to get what we need. The conservative turbo's out there all pretty much will get you at 170-190whp. Which is pretty good considering the weight. That spec would be at minimal boost etc. and for the "daily driver". I've been looking at Perfworks, Spoolin and Flyin Protege.
