My first interior mod

It's a small mod but will probably pay off in keeping the interior clean. The way the center LCD info display is recessed with a downward-sloping shelf in front of it, it looks like all kinds of dirt and dust will get down in there. I solved that problem with a thin strip of felt tape, as illustrated in this pic. It's fairly obvious in the closeup pic, but is hard to notice normally.

? That doesn't seem worth the time?
The people at Mazda are engineers that do nothing but build cars; I don't think a piece of felt tape is above them?
I'm not impressed.

Actually the LCD and Dash gap wont collect anything as any dust that falls in there will just drop all the way down on top of the radio... no crud will accumulate there and can easily be blown off with some duster can... the velcro over time will peel off leaving gooey residue which will be hard to clean... Good idea but not needed - long term its going to cause more problems than it will solve in the short term IMHO....

I like it and may do something similar (unless my lazyness prevails).

A suggestion: that trim piece (which I think looks like a ninja sword) pulls off very easily*. you might be able to add felt to the inside which would hide it and probably work just as well... just a thought.

*Quick-quick instructions: open the glove box and pull it out some, work from over the glove compartment to the left, then finish on the right side.

Ya easy on the new guy. I know it's a small thing, but I could just see dirt and dust piling up in there. Couldn't hurt anything, doesn't look bad, might help, what can I say?

I actually got the idea from my friend's VW, it has felt between different parts of the dash panels.

I dig it. Creativity and originality is what make Mazdas unique. You don't see Honda making rotaries, do you? Keep it up. I'm doing the mod.

Ok that was a very small mod and kinda lame. But here's a more useful one. The door storage pockets are nice but stuff like sunglasses slide around in there. I took black rubber shelf liner like this and cut pieces to match the bottom of the storage pockets, no more sliding stuff. I also cut out a piece for the long thin storage area to the right of the shifter.

BTW, how many people don't realize there is a small storage area at your left knee, as sitting in the driver's seat? I found it while looking for my OBD2 port.

I like that mod better... keeps my cell phone from sliding back and forth... will have to do it this weekend.... I saw the small storage area but dont see what we could put in there that wouldnt risk falling off... last thing I need is crap stuck behind pedals....

This thread made me think to put one of those 'sticky' mats you can put on the dashboard into the OBD hole by the left knee. I had previously thought, "What a nice place for my cell phone," but the phone kept flopping out under WOT. :) It won't go anywhere now! Shweet!

I think it might take a drop or two of school glue to keep the shelf liner stuff in place, mine in the door pockets is sliding around a little. But it doesn't look bad, and works well.

ORRRR you could cut a small duct with a hose from the vent above the stereo, route it down and drill a small hole in the side of the recess to have air blowing into the area to keep it clean.

Lol... I'll just use some damp wipes and a compressed can of air.

The felt is a great idea though... works Kind of like eyelashes do for the eye. I can see where you're going with it.

I just looked at that display area and thought "dirt magnet." Same as many instrument panels, dirt and dust can get behind the clear plastic covering the gauges and not many people are going to go to the trouble to disassemble their dash to get the dust out.
