its the sock stereo on my 02 protege5. It won't play CDs of music that I burned from my computer! THe songs skip. Maybe it has to do with the file size?

i usually archive my songs on computer at the largest file size for better sound quality.

my friend gave me a mix CD he recorded from mp3s he downloaded and it plays fine.

Thats why the first thing I bought was a new alpine headunit. The stock HU was just ticking me off!

My 02 stereo plays cd-r's with music I have burned fine. Possible format issues? A lot of the music I download is in wma and all I do is burn right to disc and play. GL

i have yet to have any problems playing cd-r. i think it can also play cd-rw. probably just the format. or closing issues. gl.

Ok, what do you mean by closing the disc? I use Nero to do my burning and have never been asked to do this. I only ask in case I should ever run into problems so I know where to start.

Mine skips ALOT. Can't turn it up past half way cause the bass makes it skip, and I don't have that much bass. Only does it with regular CDs if I crank it up all the way and the song has hard, constant bass beats. I am now thinking of getting a new head unit cause burning CDs is waaaaaaaaaaaay cheaper.

I burn to CD-R's all the time using iTunes and haven't had a problem yet, but I've had some issue using CDRW's, maybe it's Nero botching the conversion when it records the cd.

if you have generic CD-Rs, burn at a slightly slower speed, rather than max. i find that burning them too fast causes certain CD players to not read them correctly.

if you're going to upgrade, get a deck that plays data disk. instead of 20+/- songs, I've gotten 100+ songs on 1 disk. I have a mix session from Planet of the Drums (AK1200, Aphrodite etc) and it's over 3 hours. fit with no problem. One of my coworkers just gave me a DVD-rw with almost 1000 songs on it!

yeah, upgrading to an MP3 deck will work too. you can fit up to 700MB per CD.... i have a full 50 CD spindle that rides in the car with me. so that's basically having 35 GB of music in my car. hmmmm maybe i should get a 60GB ipod and squeeze them in there.

By close the disc they mean in the burn options in nero, check "finalize". You need to burn in "Music CD" mode, and I find that sometimes it helps to burn at the lowest speed possible. Generally an audio CD burned at 1X will have the least errors and most consistency, but some burners/programs don't have that option.

The stock unit really is bad, though. Even when I burn a perfectly good CD that plays everywhere else, it can skip randomly in the car.

CD-R playback issues are usually a media issue. If it doesn't play at all, maybe it's not closed or it's a really bad disc. I have purchased many brands of media and have found that cheap generic discs will either disintegrate early or not read well in many players (hear static and skips). Good CD-Rs should play in any CD player back to the 1980s.

Some media is at the extreme for the laser focus range or the reflectivity is poor.

my stock deck wont play cd-rw's but idc cd-r's work just fine for me. only issue i run into is occasionally i get a check cd and i just eject it and put it back in and it works fine.
i think its about time for a laser cleaner (or a new deck :D if i could afford it :( lol)

LOL! I've got 150 channels of XM radio, countless FM stations here in town, I carry about 10 MP3 discs with me, and my 30GB ZEN is hooked directly into my deck. I've got tunes liek that earl guy from the movie Tremors has guns... If I run out of music, I'm in some serious trouble! :D
