My carputer + audio setup = finished

That's the most hood thing i've ever seen. Seriously get a micro case. That thing can't be getting enough air.

sensors? lol. Right now I have 8 wires under the hood. 3 are for the wiper motor.

This is so badass. I am going to be asking a ton of questions in the next month or so, so be ready and have your homework done. lol

Micro ATX case wont fit because they are rectangular. A mini-itx case might, but if I was going to go buy a mini itx motherboard, I would just embed the thing in the dash. What I really want is a nano-itx motherboard (12cm x 12cm) - but via has been dragging their heels for years and the first samples are just now coming to japan. With that I could just put it behind the screen and be done.

Right now though, a processor as old as a k6/2 dosent need much airflow. The fan that is on it is WAY bigger than anything people used back when 450mhz was hot stuff. Its actually designed for an althlon processor (with about 4x the heat output). In its current setup, the processor stays in the 40c range which is way below the point when processors become unstable (about 65c).

neal, how does your screen look in sunlight. I got a lilliput, its not too bright in direct sunlight.

I think that's so cool, looks amazing, very clean job. I'd do that in a second. The thing is, I live in the capital of car theft in Canada and I choose to sleep at night. Same goes for dvd flip screen...etc..etc. Have fun with your new setup.

Yeah, ill be the first to admit I have odd music tastes. I was listening to the sex pistols at the time and immediatly after switched to dr. dre- go figure.

In totally direct sunlight it does get pretty washed out- not to the point of unusability. Its pretty rare for the sun to be completely on it. As long as its not completely direct it looks fine even on a bright day. I have heard that you can upgrade the backlights on both the t-view and lilliputs- might want to look into that.

I know how you feel- the whole theft thing was one of my biggest worries. Im not actually that worried about theft of the actual carputer setup (it would be pretty difficult to get the screen out without knowing in advance how is was mounted and such)- Im mostly worried that someone will break in and trash the car trying to get at it. The theft thing was the reason why I decided that It absolutely had to look like a stock nav setup.

Fortunatly, for now, my car's home is within 20ft of a security office.

Best of luck...now you should invent a snap on dummy face to go over it. Make it look like you removed your headunit face plate or something. I just thought of it now...hey that's an idea?

I do to. I've been listening to a lot of 70's music lately. I listen to EVERYTHING!!

Are you worried at all about having your car outside during temperature extremes? I have been reading stories of screen burnouts and interconnects eroding because of heat and cold snaps. I wanted to imbed my screen in the dash, too, but I live in Cleveland and the temperature extremes prevent me from doing that safely.

No problems with the cold yet. Coldest start I have done is low teens.

Wont be able to tell about hot operation for another few months.

No worries with that down here in Texas. My carputer systems has been running for over a year.

high last summer 109f low this winter 11f (with a trip to montana at jsut sub zero)

Cold'snever been a problem for me, but in the heat of summer if my car's int he sun allday on a tripledigit day, my comp will bootup but won't run right. I've taken to just disconnecting the power on my comp on days likethat (one good reason for having a HU)

Thanks for the reply nealric, once you used bondo did you just get paint from the manufacturer then? Also in general what kind of modification did you need to do inside the dash for mounting?
thanks

The dash has no mods at all. I made an aluminum cradle that the lcd mounted in and secured with "industrial strength" velco.

The paint is actually from hobby lobby. I just went and looked for what matched. Its krylon "antique bronze" color. Pretty darn good match.
