My car is making a terrible noise when I try to start it - what's going on?

Here's what may have happened...he broke his timing belt and valves/pistons slammed into each other. While it is often said the P5 is a non-interference engine because in most cases the belt breaks with no damage, there have been circumstances where guys on here have had damage done to the engine when the timing belt snaps. If I recall, damage most often occurs when the vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed. So, this is definitely a possibility.

(Braces for flame war)

The interference/non-interference argument pops up every so often...and it is usually pretty heated for some odd reason. That's why I'm waiting...:-)

why argue if its non inter, regardless IF the tbelt snapped it wouldnt turn over period, common sense, no so common

NO TIMING BELT = NO ENGINE RUN

FS engine is NON interference unless you have done something silly to it like Maxx Mazda and put 734mm lift cams on it.

Actually it has happens to stock engines as well. It happened to someone a few months ago. And an engine will turn over without a timing belt

the next person that says shenanigans is getting pistol whipped..

HEY Farva, whats that weird resturaunt you go to with all those creep nic nacs on the wall...

So the mechanic took a quick look at it this morning, and said it sounds like something is wrong with the timing. Also the top of the engine was not getting enough oil, maybe a leak. He is going to get to the bottom of it tomorrow and let me know what he finds.
