my big fat dynamat thread! AKA How to dynamat a sedan.

so here it is guys. I ordered and received a roll of like 60 sq feet of sound dampening material. I went with this raammat stuff after seeing some positive reviews on carsound.com and im eager to get goin on my car so.....

-----first of all, where should I put it?
how far will 60sq feet go? and where are the most important places to be sure to hit? I saw someone suggest 2 or even 3 layers in each door for best results, the whole trunk to cut down on rattle and the rear deck for the same reason.

If I have enough (im not sure how far this all will go) I was gonna do the floor of the car too.

Is the roof gonna be important? the dash? behind the dash somewhere?

----secondly, how do I take everything out?
How do I take everything apart?
Front Doors
Rear Doors
Rear Deck
side pillars
dash
carpet
center console (between front seats)
what do I have to be most careful with, what parts are tricky?
Any special tools? the "panel removal" tools on sounddomain look like they could be replaced by any piece of metal with a notch cut in it, or even a bbq fork or somethin..


The better/more accurate these how-tos are the better a how-to we can put together for the how-to section. I looked in there already and just found one about taking apart the doors which just links to some other site, but I was thinking anyone able to share their personal experiences with this would be even better.

it took about 100 sqft to do all of my car -- since you have a sadan -- start with the trunk -- stip it , clean it , then apply it -- mine was all one layer -- there is alot variables wheather you need 2 layers or not -- which way are the subs facing -- how much power -- ect.. i have a 1000 watts -- hit 141db and the car is solid -- except my wing -- it rattles holy hell --
but it'll get fixed --

ill be running 2 jbl GTI 10"s inverted and basically firing directly into the floor, although one will be firign kind of at an angle into the floor and forward......and they will be powered by a 1200.1 amp

looking at your link, maybe i should buy another 60 feet since yours is 100

how long did that all take you? and how hard was it taking all the panels and s*** off?

did you do just 1 layer in the doors on the plastic or on the actual outside of the door itself?

well -- i did not do my own -- i had a shop do it -- so i cant help with the panels -- but both skins of the doors were done -- none of the plastic has dynamat on it -- i have seen people put it on their moldings but i did not --

it took the guy at the shop about a week for everything -- so i guess 3 days just for dynamating --

Chris...I could help you pull all the doors and stuff apart. It's pretty simple. As for where to Dynamat...there's a whole bunch of places. Let me know if you need a hand at some point!

if u plan on using more just start somewhere and keep adding it till your done i have around 350 sq.ft. of damping. if your just using the 60 sq.ft. i'd turn some bass on and just start finding the bad spots and do it bit by bit. if you plan on having any decent midbass in the doors i'd suggest doing a coupld of layers on the outer door skin. this area will vibrate badly when you get decent midbass going. if your limited on your damping sheets i'll generally skip the floor and roof. i'll concentrate on the doors and trunk area.

i used a dynamat trunk kit and i had and eclispe titanium 15 in sub with a alphasonic amp the put out close to 2000 watts and the only thing that rattled was the license plate frame. you dont need to cover the complete panel just the week parts i actually got some left over from my kit. so 60 should be plenty you can come up to nh and do it in my shop if you want i got all the tools you will need (heat gun and roller)
