My $40 intake.

Yep, and the $40 was the K&N cone.

The silver pipe was a Maxspeed piece for an Integra. It had 2 45 degree bends and a straight section. At the start of one of the 45 bends there's a hose fitting(you can see it in the 3rd pic), so I cut the other one off. The 90 degree coupler is off of, get this, a 1st gen Legacy Turbo(it does say Subaru on it in that picture, but my mom's camera was being retarded). The orange coupler is missing a hose clamp because it's a 2.5" coupler on a 3" pipe and won't budge at all. I've gotta cut some of the bend off of the pipe but it's ok for now. Also prolly going to make some sort of heat shield but I donno how or with what.

Now then the 90 degree coupler is also 3" so I had to take a busted up coupler and fit it over the throttle body so it sealed up. Works flawlessly.

Compared to my cut up airbox, it seems to flow much better at high RPM...the airbox made very deep sound, this intake sounds more in tune with the engine and sounds very purty.

Horay for DIY kitbash (mostly) free mods. (rockon)

Next you should build a heatshield for the intake out of pieces of a stolen stopsign. :D

Stolen stop sign?! That's wrong! I'd use the "Now leaving St. Louis County maintenance" sign, it's a better size. I've also got one of those huge arrow signs, a speed limit sign, "entering St. Louis County maintenance", road construction, proceed at your own risk, etc. One of my uncles "found" them on the side of the road. Whether they were on a post or not, I don't know.

But without that Subaru 90 degree bend I could have never gotten this to work. And those Legacy turbos are rare!

Ebay $30 cold air intakes for the p5's come with a 90 degree elbow.

And they are that tight of a 90 degree? It can't be much bigger than what I have because of the radiator hose, and hood clearence.

What you need is "Employee of the month parking" sign for that mod..

yes. :Let me see if I can find a picture..

NM, i'm not even on my computer right now. Will post it up later.

Miata intake Stage 2!

Worked on it yesterday.
Shortened/removed bend on the main pipe.
Cut orange coupler in half.
Added clamp to coupler.
Reworked the pcv hose setup.
Added intake brace.
Relocated main wire harness for more slack in the AFM wire.
Cut tab on hood for prop-rod for clearence on the AFM bolt/brace.

The way it is now, the AFM sits on the tensioner but is held to the engine via the brace I made out of a 1st gen 929 radio mount. Now the intake is completely supported by the engine so I don't have to worry about friction between the filter and the chassis or anything like that. The intake pipe sits virtually parallel to the front of the engine and everything is more secure than before.

Stage 3 will be the heat shield.

wow, this is awesome. the most cobbled together intake kit i've seen in awhile. i love ingenuity man!

ps: i'm serious, not being an ass or anything...although it may seem like i'm being an ass by just posting this. but good job anywho.

looks awesome! so how did you go about cutting htat pipe? hacksaw?

Yup. I have a pipe cutter but it's only good up to 2.5" OD and the pipe is 3. I guessed where to cut it by just placing it up and seeing how it looked. I made 2 cuts total(one on each end). Cut the coupler and vacuum hose with a pair of my mom's gardening shears. LOL

So much better on stage 2 than stage 1. It actually looks sorta professional.

Glad you all like it. Not making a showcar, pure function and cost efficiancy. Totalling it up, minus fuel/oil changes/insurence, I've spent ~$3,400? on the car. Can't beat it with a shtick!

haha yeah i took a hacksaw to my ebay last night, too bad mine still doesn't look as clean and lined up as yours haha plus mine's throwing a cel... i don't think it's related but right after i did it started having problems

Got the IAC vacuum line hooked up? I plugged it on my Protege when I first messed with the intake and it basically disabled cold-start...didn't throw a CEL, or I don't remember it, but it did make it start like hell. Would start then die unless I kept my foot on the gas and drove like crap until it warmed up, then it drove fine.
