mx6 fluttering idle

Hi there, I'm new to the forum. I just picked up a 95 mx6 with the 4 bannger, 5 speed, and came across a strange idle situation. Sometimes it will idle at 800 RPM and be just fine, other times it will flutter between 800 and 1800 while I am coasting. Then when I come to a stop the idle will stick at 1800. I tired to google this problem, but didn't come up with any deffinate answer to this idle deal. It is an intermintent problem so my room mate and I are kind of baffeled, especially since it will stop fluttering when you come to a complete stop, but its a manual so it can't be transmission related. Other than this, the car runs good and smooth. I'm open to any ideas however, I live on campus so my tools and work space is limmited for the time beeing. Thanks in advance.

Do you get a CEL come on or do you have any codes ? My V6 had similar problems and it ended up being a vaccum leak and stuck EGR valve. check the mx6 forum as well. I say check for any malfuction codes first; remember, some codes might not trigger a check engine light. good luck and keep us updated.

There is no check engine light or anything like that. Also, I do not know how to pull the engine codes with out some sort of reader. On my jeep, I can get them from turning the ignition on and off 3 times and then the check engine light will flash the codes. Is there some simmilar way to pull them on mazdas?

And I actually solved the problem. I read on another forum that someone had a simmilar problem and their anti-freeze was low. I haden't checked the radiator fluid since I checked the other fluids while it was hot. It wasn't over heating, but I noticed that it warmed up rather fast. I checked the fuild a few days ago and sure enough it was low. I topped it off and now the idle works just fine. I have no idea how radiator fluid and the idle are related, maybe there is a sensor of some sort?

Another note to add, I thought that maybe it was the TPS, so I found a good write up on how to test the TPS here: http://forums.probetalk.com/showthread.php?t=1701143892

yeah, it can cause the fluttering idle. the only sensor i know of that has anything to do with coolant in the V6 is the engine coolant temperature sensor. it's relatively easy to get OBD-I codes, but since yours is a 95 i think it's OBD-II. glad to hear u found a fix.
