Will be shown at London motor show

Mazda is tipped to unveil a folding tin-top version of its brilliant new MX-5 at this summer's British Motor Show in London.

This computer-generated image gives an idea of what the car could look like, but you'll have to wait until July for official shots of the new Mazda.

There's no more official information on the secret Mazda just yet, but we'd expect it to go on sale later this year with a price tag of around 17,000 to 17,500 - about 1500 to 2000 more than the soft-top.

This summer's event should be the best British Motor Show in decades, because along with the Mazda it will feature world debuts of the next-generation Land Rover Freelander and Vauxhall Corsa.

I really hope it doesn't throw off the weight balance or anything when the top is down. I'll keep waiting for them to release a Roadster Coupe (oxymoron??) like they did with the NB. That thing looked great.

Yeah...the weight issue has me concerned. Mazda was ranting and raving on how they shaved weight off of the new MX-5....and now they put on a folding hardtop?

Right now it's officially an option for the 06' MX-5. It's in many dealers ordering database and the release date is due in a few months. As for who would want this ? most likely those who are less concerned with performance and more concerned with practicality.

it's a nice option, whether it adds weight or not. definitely adds some practicality of a hardtop car. a few friends of mine have the hardtop for the S2000, and i think it looks hot. of course, you can always take it off when you want a convertible.

The retractable hardtop we're talking about here does not utilize the existing trunk. It just replaces the soft top in the same boot area. Oh, and its powered ... in 12 seconds supposedly. A dealer on www.miata.net says it's going to be listed at $2000.

They do have a traditional hardtop still available. This retractable one is something new that Mazda is about to release. The NC sales figures are much better than previous generations, so I assume that's why Mazda is offering an option like this.

Hopfully because of the extra weight (and the fact that the GM is coming out with the GXP, and the redline) Mazda will have the Speed MX5 with the opion also. Now that would be sweet!!

and honestly, unless they're racing it, i doubt anyone would notice the extra weight anyway.

that said, i'd still stick w/ the soft top.
