Muteki Lug Nuts Question

I'm getting ready to put an aftermarket set of wheels on my MS3 (Konig Runaways). In doing so, I'm not going to want to keep the vendor's chrome crap nor stock on the car for very long. I'd like something a bit lighter and stylish.

I'm looking at a set of Muteki SR48 (41886L) closed ended lugs. I know they are a 12x1.5mm pitch so that part's covered, but what about the measurement of 20x34mm? Should that be sufficient to torque properly and fit?

Or would you suggest going with the open ended version of the SR48?

Thanks in advance, guys!

I have miserable experience with Muteki lug nuts. My friend installed those on his WRX with Prodrive Rims. On one of the wheel, 3 of them deformed. Ended up drilling and sawing off all 5 lugs . Muteki is made of soft aluminum and will deform under torque. Seriously think twice if you are looking for lightweight nuts.

Can you recommend another brand? I was also looking at Blox. I was hoping to find some that are anodized Purple but I'll settle for Black if need be.

Been using Muteki Lug nuts for 5 years. Never had an issue.

Did you go with the closed or open ended? In my area the air is humid and I've heard the open ended can oxidize. I've read threads where people had issues with Muteki and others did not.

In my past cars I've had Gorilla lugs on and the only issue I ever had was snapping the key if I didn't use my Gorilla breaker bar with them (or a similar bar).

I'm trying to combine quality and style here. Again, looking for a purple lug nut but I'm open to suggestions. Thanks for your feedback.

I use Muteki's with my wheels, they seem to be ok to me..but I must admit that I was always leary about them...especially when I had a tire shop take them off and on with their air tools.(eek2)

I always make a shop break them by hand first. Even when I'm at work on a lift, I torque by hand. I just use air to get them on quick.

There is NOTHING wrong with Muteki lugnuts if you torque them to the proper limits - this means DO NOT USE AIR TOOLS! Use a torque wrench and torque them down properly! Unless of course you want to drop $140+ on a set of Rays lugnuts...

FWIW, I was not aware the SR48's came in closed-ended form, only the SR35's.

As mentioned, I typically torque by hand and to factory spec a good torque wrench with anything I work on. Especially wheels!

I think you're right about the SR48's. I was looking at Ebay for a decent price on them and they were advertising the closed end as SR48. I'll most likely go with the Muteki's but wanted to get some 411 first.

I've seen a couple places that mention they are forged cold steel while others note forged aluminum. Any thoughts on this?

My friend had the closed end one. Maybe he has a set of bad lug nuts. No air tools was used in installing the nuts. 3 of the 5 on one wheel were just totally distorted when he tried to remove the wheel with a hand wrench.

It's possible. Also the remote chance that they were cross-threaded can cause that as well. Also, if you over/under torque the lugs major heat can be generated and potentially ruin the lugs/studs.

Interested in hearing other's experience with Mutekis as well. I'm also looking at McGard but they don't have them in Purple (only Black or Chrome)

Sorry to threadjack, but while we're on the subject, can anyone reccomend a good set of locking red lugs? I was looking at an open ended set of mutekis, but I don't believe they sell a locking version.

We have sold a decent pile of Muteki lugs and not have any problems with them. We do recommend the tighten to not be done with air tools.

We installed a set of closed end on our 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 when we put the new wheels on it.

I have the sr48's on my shadowblack konig runaway 18x8's. The color is black chrome and they look very nice and have had zero issues.

Thanks Derrick. Did you use the SR35s? I'm assuming that's the only close end they sell?

Closed. And no air tools. If you are looking for color, I had mine blasted and powdercoated for a buck a piece.

I have some black Exedium lugnuts that are aluminum now and say for certain the Muteki's are some kind of steel just due to the weight difference. I remember them feeling quite substantial.

I will have the look at the pack to make sure which models we used on the car. Sounds correct though.

Thanks! So far the only closed end I see are the SR35. I'm doing the whole "murdered" look on my car but I figured purple lugs might be a nice break in the black. Now to decide on my calipers lol
