dont know if this has all been posted already but oh well
"8 Car Shootout, we pickt he best performance car for less than 20,000"
8. Civic Si: Ironic that the last Si essentially CREATED the whole market for these kinds of cars, and the latest one is the worst in the class it invented...
7. GTI 1.8t: nothin special. Lots of nice ammeneties it sounds like, poor suspension
6. Tib V6: no high RPM power. V6 designed for SUV/Family sedan not sporty car.
5. Spec-V: poor styling and suspension, gobs of torque...
3. (Tie) Cooper S: impressive handling etc.....bad: tall gearing, sluggish throttle response
3. (Tie) SVT Focus: well rounded, nothing exceptional
2. MSP: no lateral support in seats....everything else was excellent
1. SRT-4: tons of power. Faster quarter mile times than a mustang GT and within a tenth of a second of the 350z.....8 more horses at the wheels than claimed at the crank....
a couple interesting quotables:
Gathering performance data it quickly became clear that the SRT4 was dominting the straight lin tests, and the MSP was dominating the handling tests. so to break the tie they took e to a mountain road......It took more than 3 miles for the SRT-4 to pull an appreciable gap on the MSP. While not as solid and composed as the MSP, the neon still showed decent balance, good drip, strong fade free brakes, and of course staggering power between corners."
"The MSP gives up 73 hp and 100lbft of torque to the SRT-4 but it almost nudged the neon out of the top spot.....the fact is, none of this cars test numbers, not even its winning handling numbers, do justice to the MSPs capabilities.
just a sample. Also worth noting, the used all original figures for this test. MSP came in at 150hp, along with the SVT, cooper 157, GTI 171, tib 148, spec-v a suprising 146, and si 138....
154 torque on the spec v and 150 on msp...
