MSP Falling off?

i agree. i like a challenge. and really, its not a bad car to mess with if u understand what your dealing with. for example, our engines make what N/A, 110whp or so? so when ur at 205whp on ur msp, your doubling the engines output, what do you expect. its not a forged factory engine so u have to do it right.

I guess you could be right, But I've seen sad tales of several members of the ZOOM ZOOM BOOM BOOM club.

Too much money to mod to high levels. Just start with a stronger platform IMHO. Then again I don't have thousands of dollars to spend to mod a car.

Overall though I like the MSP. I think it looks a heck of a lot better than that bulbous (but still kinda funky) MS3.

MSP+Forged rods, and a welded LSD =:) and more power...imo a platform is what you make of it. Take this car for example
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123643574
Who would have thought. And the MSP is a 100x better platform. Sure the MS6 & MS3 are out and have alot of strengths, but no car has the MSP's balance. And that is where the whole car comes together. If you want the engine to make power do it right, same with the LSD, and I'm sure you'll have a blast. Just my 2 cents.

Holy moly I type slow and have too may text msgs to answer, here's what I wrote about a half hour ago:

**** THAT. I love this car. How many other people in this town (pop. 20,000+) have it??? ****** NONE. You know how many compliments I get in a week on this car? Not everyday, mind you, but I get plenty, definitely more than one a week. I go down the road to Omaha (pop. 350,000+) and there is less than 5 or 6 probably. I love when people ask me, "WTF is that?" I love waxin' these damn 5.0L Mustangs that thought I was some ricer w/ a big wing.
Besides that, I'm so intrigued by these guys (505zoom, Deadalus, & others I'm forgetting) putting down such big numbers and I WANT TO DO IT. I know it is FWD, but I wanna kill these guys that pull up next to me.

Only we know how much hard work and effort gets put into these things. Nobody understands the limited availability of parts like we do. That's what will make it so special the further along I get with this car, knowing how hard it was to build it.

Sometimes when I see a really nice MSP I wish I had one. Then when I visit the forum and see someone has blown a stock motor I run outside and hug my slow but less likely to detonate naturally aspirated P5. Turbos scare me. So fun but so dangerous.

i push aftermarket companies daily to support this car with new parts and ideas. its only dead when the people that drive and love them give up on them.

Yep. Case in point, my original Mazda turbo, the 323 GTX. Even less support now, but they're still around and still a hoot to drive. Nothing like leaving a Rustang in the dust from a light and you know the driver is thinking, "WTF? He didn't even chirp the tires!"

The MSP is a similar case, but we'll have to see where it goes. I think we'll be in better shape 15 years from now than I am with my GTX. There were more MSP's made (4,000 vs. 1,100 GTX's) and people are much more into tuning imports than they were in the late 80's.

I said from day one that you'll get my Spicy MSP when you pry it from my cold dead hands, and 60k miles later I'm still saying it. Yes, mine broke a diff and it wasn't from hard driving. (In went another tranny with a Quaife.) Yes, I know the boosted FS won't last forever. (A fully built spare race engine awaits installation this winter.) Yes, some may consider it stupid to put 4 or 5 grand into a car that I only paid 16.9k for, but I don't care. If I cared...if I were part of the status quo... I wouldn't have bought the MSP in the first place. What I bought was a car that SCC still holds as the best handling FWD production car ever made..."still the erstwhile king of twisty mountain roads." A car that in many tests has been beaten in the slalom only by the EVO. Not $100k 911 Turbos, just the EVO. And that's stock. It's rare, it's different, the handling and driving experience is so tangible you can taste it... it's a damn good looking car (and it only looks that much better next to cars like the new WRX, lol.) I get compliments on my car constantly. Yesterday I was in a different city and 4 ricers tried to get me to race just while I was on the phone with my wife for 30 min. That in it's own way is a compliment. They obviously felt inferior to my awesome ride or they wouldn't feel that they had to prove something. And the best part? I've got the only one in a metro area of over 300k people. I love having something different, and in the case of the MSP I really think it's something better.

So what if it has a few issues? If it didn't, it would be a damn Honda. I didn't buy a Honda. I bought another "market experiment" from Mazda, (not my first) and I knew exactly what I was getting into. I got into it on purpose.

:bs: j/k

HAHAH DAMN!!! i almost ran outside to hop in my car and go find some races after watching that. but back on topic, i love this car i got it at 40k used a year ago and now it has 60k w/out any problems. I think this car is awesome and yes it was a marketing project from mazda but who cares if it has some issues. Its a rare car and that is what makes it special, when you think about it its more rare than some exotics since it was only sold here in north america. If it breaks so be it, s*** happens and that only gives me and others an excuse to go rebuild with forged internals to make it stronger.

yes you can go out and buy a wrx or evo with the same amount of money you wil invest into the msp but would you have the same amount pride you would if you were to build the msp? I dont think so, so that is why i consider the MSP to be (first)

"F" all of the MSP haters. At 61,000+ miles my only problems were the clunck, flash, and radio. Sure the zoom-zoom-boom and broken lsd threads get a lot of attention, but when you look at the total number of cars produced versus the limited number of problems, its far from an epedemic.

I'd buy the car all over again. Some people just want too much for under $20,000, IMO! Its a unique looking car, that offers outstanding handling and decent performance without having to pay a premium. As with anything mass produced, there were some areas that could have been handled better without a doubt. Thankfully, most of those areas can be addressed in the aftermarket. There are plenty of options available if you decide to modify the car.

I am glad that I do not own the "it" car and that there are still people that do not know what it is and are amazed that it came from the factory the way it did. It also makes me smile everytime I have an opportunity to run some one and show just what a 4 door sedan can do. The look on there face when I tell them its a 4 cylinder is just priceless!

I duno, I was kind of planning on keeping my speed 4ever.

-havent had a single problem with it
-owned it since day one
-daily driven and daily rapped.
-sexy fkn car...

What can I say...

i love the msp. if i get a chance to drive it, of course i take advantage of the offer. every car is going to have problems. thats a given. i hear people bashing msp's all day long. "it's just a protege". i completely agree with the pride in building the car, putting time and money, along with patience into it. it seems like the only problems weve really had are just from wear and tear: a clutch, brakes, rotors. ive noticed the motor mounts arent the greatest. but the msp was made for only a year and a half. there wasnt really much time to find problems, and what to fix for the years to come. why do you think hondas last so long, theyve had the same cars forever and once they notice a reoccurring problem they fix it on the next years production. also i am pretty sure that every car manufacturer is going to skimp out on some places of the car so they can make upgraded and aftermarket parts for the car, just to get more money out of you.

everytime alex gets made at the car and talks about trading it in, we have a talk about it. both him and i love the car too much, we've put money into it, and enjoy driving it. its not as respected as it could/should be. and thats what gives you the drive to make it look nice and just as fast as these evos and srt4's and what not, you want your car to be respected. i respect any car that has had dedication, time and money put into to make it faster and look nicer than one you could just go buy off a lot thats already fast.

just my opinion.

Awesome, its so nice talking to others whom love their MSP for what it really is. I don't plan on getting rid of my baby anytime soon at all. I haven't had any problems what so ever. My is daily driven, and daily beat on.

I love mine, I have already commited to keeping it forever, God willing I plan on handing the keys to my matured son so he can have a super rare car that was alot of fun to drive. Will it be worth 1000s of dollars? Probably not, but it is worth so much more to me than money. It is a sexy car, I have fathomed up teh dream lottery version where I put an EVO8 engine and drivetrain in the speed body. Don't take me seriously, everybody has a what if you one the lottery dream, it isn't going to happen, but if it did then I would have what I want in motor and looks. Back to the speed the way it is, two weekends ago we went up to the Ga mountains, 3 speeds, 1 P5, 1 911(non turbo), and a M3. We had a blast and anybody that tried to keep up with us couldn't, we had the best time pulling off at look outs and waiting to see how long it took the groups of cars trying to follow us to catch up. And the M3 and 911 both had work done to them and they were struggling to keep up. Even on a straight line I am not disappointed, I am keeping up with my buddies SRT4 with 16psi, hard pipes, cat eliminated and e-cutout, so I burst the hell outa his bouble twice, once when I ran 15 psi and was pulling him slightly, then again when I ran 9 psi and barely got pulled on, and I had my cutout closed then. Now I have megasquirt, forged rods, forged pistons and a knife edged and balanced crank waiting install I am gonna show him what it means to learn your car and work hard to make it what it is. I spent a lot of time researching what I want to do and my car thanks me when I do it. I wash it and try to keep it clean, I change the oil, brakes and all other maintenence on schedule to keep the car as healthy as possible. If you treat this car right and research what you are doing there is no reason why this isn't a good platform, I never asked for something to be so simple it is practicly handed to me if I have the money like the stage kits form Mopar, where's the sense of admiration in doing your own work up? So simply put, I do love my Mazaspeed Protege and I too don't like seeing alot of the negative attention it gets from unhappy owners and former owners that feel they moved on to something better thank god. It was an experiment by Mazda and it had/ has its share of problems that all experiments have. SRTs got boost gauges installed from the factory, I don't know one yet that hasn't needed to get it replaced, my buddy mentioned earlier had his warranty declined on the gauge because his cutout made the gauge work incorrectly. anyways goo thread, every once in a while when these pop up I like throwing my word into it.

Great input so far. I hate seeing fellow mazda owners bash their cars as well. I want to stay within the mazda family for a lot of time to come.

I would not say they are bashing their car, I would say they are being honest about it's shortcomings.

I mean I love my P5 but that doesn't mean that I hate the fact that it's slow as molasses. I think if you pay money for a car then you have the right to say about it what you want.

The MSP is FAR from the perfect car but it is not without it's charms.

It looks great, handles great, and is decently quick. It's also flawed but thats okay because thats what makes it fun. Tinkering with it and getting it to it's full potential. But let's not pretend it is not without its many faults.

I tell you i beat on my car , and it finally went upo at the track . Iam trying to sell it but if i dont i will built it up and have some fun.
