MS3 vs. Dodge Caliber SRT: Don't hate me

OK, I'm going to express some controversial opinions here, and don't hate because I mean no offense to anyone interested in the MS3. If I ddn't find it an intriquing car, and one I may very well buy, I wouldn't be here.

A little history re my car tastes and purchases. In 2003 I was making piles of dough and bought a 2003 Corvette off the show room floor. Loved it. Never had a problem, thrilling performance, and actually managed 30mpg on the freeway. The only disappointing aspect of the car was its "made by Rubbermaid" interior and I read that the new ones are not much better. Plus, I considered buying a used one from '04 on, when the new model was released (or was it '05)? but they are still selling in the mid to low 40s.

I lost my job several months later and needed cash, but still wanted a fast car, so I sold it and bought a Dodge SRT4. Upside: fast, particularly after I added Mopar's Stage II kit. Downside: looked like a Neon with a wing, practically no ammenities (rear window had a crank!) and not the most inspiring build quality I've ever experienced.

I traded that in for a TSX which was a dream car--IVTEC engine, tons of luxury features, a motor that sounded like silk and moved the car with authority, if not blinding speed. Fully loaded with nav for around 28K. Unfortunately within 6 months of having this car, I was in two not a fault accident which collectively produced TWENTY TWO THOUSAND DOLLARS in damage. The rose was off the bloom.

So I traded it in a few years ago for a 2004 Pontiac GTO. This is the most satisying car I have ever owned, and I must be nuts to even think about trading it. It's built like a goddamned tank, has a beautiful interior, and its motor and tranny are straight from the 'Vette. Unfortunately it's rather plain looking and is FAT. It's the difference, as one of the car mags noted about the new Shelby Mustang, that it's a "muscle car" (like the GTO) and not a "sports car." Its handling is rather portly and it eats gas like my 65 Mustang. Even though mine is screaming yellow with blacked out windows and chromed wheels, it barely gets a second glance until people notice the GTO badge; then it gets considerably more atention.

I'm not too proud to confess that I like my car to turn heads and being a car that not everyone has.

So now...having new car fever, and thinking about an entirely different dirving experience--a turbo 4 as opposed to a thirsty 8 that will weight about SIX HUNDRED POUNDS LESS and still match, closely, the acceleration of the GTO--not to mention the gas savings and and not wanting a car that approaches or exceedss 30K, here's what I'm considering:

1) Solstice GXP and Saturn Sky Redline, even though, nicely equiped, they will reach near 30K. Plus I have had a BMW Z3 and I've found that a small to no trunk and lack of two more seats gets old, particularly for me who has two dogs to haul around.

2) Civic Si. Problems: not a particularly striking looking car, not as fast as the MS3, and I would have to order chrome wheels and a leather interior with some lumbar padding (two necessities for me in ANY car I buy) which would effectively bring the price to 25K+ for a car that takes almost 7 seconds to get to 60. Compared to the MS3 which is supposed to reach 60 in the mid-fives, the Honda's simply not fast enough or unique looking enough. Plus, while it's a blast to drive (and I have) and comes with Honda's typical quality and reliability, there's a very noticable lack of torque which takes some of the fun away, particularly after owning a GTO. This is a car that requires constant shifting to keep it on the boil, ala the S2000, and I could see that getting old, even though the shifting is like butta.

3) Obviously, the MS3. After the heat dies down, I could probably get one for MSRP or less in about a year, and leather seats with lumbar support are standard on the Grand Touring Model. Downside...and here's where I'll ask you to not hate me...it looks like a SECRETARY's car. It's "cute" and, to my mind, is barely distinguishable from the Pontiac Vibe and its Toyota cousin. I know the the MS3 model beefs up the look, but not enough for me. I want my car to STAND OUT and be frankly "a man's car" and I don't see this one doing it. I wish the MS3 would have been introduced in the 4-door 3, which I think is more masculine, better looking and less "cute." Despite its performance, it doesn't exactly scream "get out of my way." This may not matter to you guys, but it does to me.

4) Recently I've been looking into the Dodge Caliber SRT. I don't know the release price or release date (I think in November) but it's far more muscular/butch looking than the Mazda, has the same hatchback utility, not to mention having more power. At first I thought it was butt-ass ugly, but it's kinda growing on me. What puzzles me about its published 0-60 times of "under 6 seconds" is that it's SLOWER than my SRT4, which carried about 230 horses vs. the Caliber's 300. Is it a weight difference? Also, I'm sure that he MS3 will be a higher quality car. It also appears slightly slower than the MS3, despite having a considerly more powerful engine (hp wise, not necessarily torque).

5) Also of interest is the upcoming Volvo C3. 4 door hatch, 5 cylinder turbo, and very, very unique looking. Unfortunately I think it'll be priced, loaded, at or above the magic 30K mark.

6) I have also thought about buying a good condition, used WRX Sti or the Mitsu Evo, but again, I find the styling of these cars hideous. They're four door boxes with a hood scoop and an outrageous wing (yeah, I know it's allegedly "functional"). Despite their impressive performance, they still look like s*** to me and they are becoming far too common. The upcoming Evo X looks like a typical 4-door sedan with little to suggest the power underneath and will likely be in the 35K range.

Anything else I'm missing in this cheap but powerful auto offerings?

Feel free to comment on anything I've written, but I'm particularly interested in the comparisons between the MS3 and the Caliper SRT.

I think your srt 4 was underrated and it actually had 230 whp, thats what dynos have said. As for the the comparison between the ms3 and the caliber, I don't think there is one. The ms3 will beat it in every way except horse power and I don't think the caliber will come out until 08. I don't see why you would think the speed 3 looks cute. I think it looks much meaner than the regular 3's. The volvo would be interesting if it came with the same engine as the european version, but its kind of weak with only 218 hp. It sounds like you want a car that drives like a sports car and I think the speed 3 is going to outhandle the caliber easily especially when you consider that the caliber is more of a crossover than a car. Good luck with whatever you decidde.

First and foremost, welcome to the forum. You're in an enviable position. Personally for me, the most exciting part of buying a new car is 'the hunt'. Obviously actually owning what you decided on is fun too but can also be somewhat anticlimatic since it signals the end of the aforementioned hunt.

But I digress... Whether you fully realize this or not, standing out from the crowd in a 'masculine' car is something you find important. You mentioned it more than once so it's obvious that it's a prime factor. The only reason I inferred you may not realize this is due to the fact that you're STILL considering the MS3. I too am not a HUGE fan of the styling and choice in going with the hatch, but for me, it's not a deal-breaker. I personally don't mind having a 'sleeper' while you're close to the other side of the spectrum. Nothing inherently wrong with that... but it needs to be fully realized in order for you to reach your decison easier.

So... despite the fact that this is indeed a Mazda board, I think you need to cross the MS3 off your list. Unless its styling continues to grow on you and/or you get past the fact that it's not as 'macho' looking as you would like, you're most likely going to regret your decision and find yourself in a situation similar to the one you're currently in. As much as I would love to have owned as many cars as you in the past few years, it generally doesn't make any financial sense. Typically, you're upside down in the equity department for at least a couple and more often than not, 3+ years. I don't know too many people that don't mind throwing money away so, unless you plan on leasing, it's best to choose a car that you plan on keeping for at least 3 years. I'm hoping you got a deal on that GTO because a friend of mine sells Pontiacs and tells me they can't even give those cars away. I'm with you... though it's definitely not a head-turner, it's not offensive either. In fact, overall, I think it has nice clean lines. I don't like the new hood, however. Simply doens't flow with the rest of the car. All Pontiac really needed to do was add some fender flares to the rear. That's really the car's biggest problem. Other than that, it's not as bad as most critics say. Awesome power... subpar handling (which shouldn't be a big deal to most of the target market) and an interior that's put together almost as well as an upscale luxury import. Because they're selling (or at least trying to) at or below invoice, if gas wasn't so expensive, I think a lot of would-be buyers would put the looks aside and buy one. Hell, I'd consider it. But anyway... my only point is, I hope you're not in a position where you're going to lose a lot of dough. If you're not spending a ton of $$$ on gas and are upside down, I'd just keep it and maybe do some things to make it stand out a bit. Black bbs wheels with chrome rings would look badass on that car.

If you're still hell bent on getting a new ride... of the choices you listed, as much as I hate to say this (I'm not really a dodge fan), but that car might be the best choice (of of those that you listed). Reason: you mentioned you have 2 dogs so I'm guessing the extra cargo room of the psuedo suv caliber would come in handy. Also, you want a macho look.... they don't come much more macho than dodge. I'd be curious to see a breakdown of male/female buyers... with all the dodge vehicles being so damn manly looking! Dodge is probably alienating a lot of female buyers... but who cares abotu them? haha

personally, there's only 2 things I don't like (which are definitely deal-breakers) about the upcoming srt-4. 1) it's a dodge... until things change, that means it's just a matter of time before it self-destructs. When you're getting beat out by the likes of Kia in reliability ratings, you know you're in trouble. 2) Though it's true the americans are finally starting to build higher quality interiors, I've been in a caliber and (ugly styling aside) it's still not on par with what I require. it doesnt' matter how good looking a vehicle is on the outside. 99% of the time, you're looking at it from the inside. There's just nothing exciting about the interior of this new caliber. It's far too truck-like for my tastes. The 3 on the other hand is about as good as it gets (in this price range). If reliability and interior qualty/styling dont' matter to you... or you simply disagree with what I just said, choosing the srt-4 may be the one for you. I expect its acceleration times to be in the low to mid 5s and high 13s. Despite its looks, it's not THAT heavy. And 300 hp is 300 hp... no matter how you slice it. if this car isn't faster than the previous srt (which was pretty damn quick!) there's a problem. Dodge is wise to post conservative figures. Always better to pleasantly surprise people than to pull what Mazda did a couple years ago with the RX-8.

So yeah... good luck and everything. As you can tell, I love the hunt. I spend far too much time researching cars... I've already put a deposit down on a MS3 but that's not going to stop me (nothing will) from continuing my quest for knowledge. I'm sure you'll find plenty of people that share this mentality so, whether or not you elect to go with a mazda, you should continue to check in on this board. I've been to a lot and this is by far the best. (naturally I'm biased)

Lastly... you really think the new Evo's styling is boring? Wow.. couldnt' disagree with you more. I'd post a pic but I'm too lazy to... so just take a look at this site. If this is the car you're refering to then.... damn! maybe what you need is to go back to the vette! http://www.rsportscars.com/foto/10/conceptx05_021600.jpg

On a related note... while the wing on the current EVO (and Sti) is indeed functional.... by most accounts, that's only at rather high speeds. 100mph or more I think... Since I'm not ballzy enough to pull that s***, if I owned either of those cars.... that hideous wing would be on ebay the second I drove it home. the stock wrx spoiler as well as the Lancer's look 1000x better (imo) and give the cars more of a sleeper look. (though, you'd have to be living under a rock not to know those cars pack a serious punch...with or without a spoiler) Bottom line: Both are superior choices to everything you've owned... and everything you've listed. (with the possible exception of the vette) so... my advice to you would be to find some pictures of them without the wing. They definitely don't look like secretarys cars! both get excellent gas mileage and can potentially (with relatively little dough) be just as, if not faster, than the vette you owned. if I had the money, evo with a lancer es wing would be my ride. Though it's already sold to some lucky bastard (for $20k no less! wtf? how'd I miss out on this?) you still get the idea.... i mean, does it not like a million times better with this wing?

Wow, you've owned an impressive list of vehicles. I would LOVE to own a GTO. I'm in love with those big palookas and I don't care what anyone says. My personal opinion about MS3 vs Caliber SRT is this:

Neither is very good looking but at least the MS3 is decent looking while I actually prefer the looks of the Neon SRT4 to the Caliber SRT4. Mazda will have hte edge in build quality and handling while dodge will have the edge in power. Given the choice, I'd go MS3

Chico, which dealership did you lay down the payment at? Thomaston? Ballard... I've owned my share of muscle cars myself. I currently still have a supercharged 02 GT I bought new, and a 79 Camaro with a 400 in it on top of my daily driver focus... which is a blast to drive around even with such a low power level. The Mazda shares the same suspension as the European Focus which is supposed to have even better handling than my 00 Focus. That with more power and care taken to make sure it gets to the ground is a perfect mix for me. I also like the non-chalant look of the car. After driving a loud and mean looking Mustang around for 4 years I kind of want something that doesnt draw attention (especially with my driving). I also considered the SRT-4 Caliber, but what I value in a car (Not being noticed.. rather have a vette than a viper) The SRT-4's body style is made to get noticed. 3 scoops on the hood alone... The muscular look of the body style to begin with. The huge roof spoiler hanging over the rear window. It's definately a male oriented car. The reviews of the stock Caliber have all been subpar for the most part. Driveline complaints, disconnected driving feeling and questionable material quality to the interrior just makes me kind of nervous. The vehicle is also blockier, sits higher due to the roof line and is generally less aerodynamic. It only weighs slightly more so thats negligable. Dog's should fit fine in either hatchback and is the reason I'm considering these cars vs's the MazdaSpeed6 which I also would get because it is understated in the styling category. I dont want to get a reasonably fast car compared to most on the road only to find myself spending more time signing tickets on the side of the highway for Officer Smiley. I have a feeling the calibers gonna attract a lot more of that attention. Both SRT-4's should have similiar performance due to the wieght difference of almost 300 lbs. So you already know what to expect performance wise.

Good luck.

MS3 vs Caliber

Wow, guys, thanks for such thoughtful, great input.

Yeah, the "thrill of the chase" is addictive for me. In addition to the 'Vette, the BMX Z3, the GTO, the TSX and the SRT4, I've also owned, within the last several years, a Mitsu 3000VR4, a Mitsu Eclipse turbo 4WD, and an Acura TL Type S.

My second car is a 1965 Ford Mustang with the 289 that my Mom gave to me several years ago. She bought it new off the showroom floor 40 years ago. It's in perfect condition and is my pride and joy.

The "failure" of the GTO in the marketplace is a great mystery to me, and I have to assume, as the automotive press does, that it was due to its somewhat bland looks, but damn...I'd ten times rather have this car than everyone and his brother's Mustang GT. The build quality rivals or passes every car I have ever owned and its performance speaks for itself. Unfortunately, 350 HP in a 3600 lb car = 16mpg. That wasn't such a big deal two years ago, but now...Still, I can't think of any other car that offers its performance for the money, now or then. It's a Corvette for almost 1/2 the price.

And yeah, my pursuit of automotive kicks has bled me dry. The routine is always the same...I find a car I fall in love with and buy it. I don't lease because I'm POSITIVE this is the car I will drive until it falls apart. Then, a year to two years later, I'm prowling the new car lot. It's been a very costly cycle for me, and I'm trying my best to convince myself to hold on to the GTO and try to be satisfied with what I have, for once...

But damn, the MS3 is such a sweet little number!

Here it go again...

although the styling of the civic si is fresh and a much needed facelift in today's econo-performance segment, i found the shifter way too sloppy. unsure and just plain clumsy, the feel and preciseness did not compare to my friend's base RSX.

as far as the MS3 vs the calibre SRT, in the end that will come to your test drive. while im no fan of anything that came out a chrysler drawing board, it is again a fresh face--albeit an SUV looking face, and is an eager replacement for the neon. my money is on the mazda, i'd like to see the japanese underdog take a lead every once in a while. good luck with your purchase and boy do i envy your car history

If your only real hesitation with the MS3 has to do with the appearance, who says it has to stay stock? I've done a little photoshop for you, with a drop, chromed 18" RX8 wheels, and body color lower grill insert

Now THAT looks sharp.

I would definitely buy chromed aftermarket rims, as I do for all my cars, but where did the body insert come from? To be honest, I can't find it...what's the dif between the two pics?

Re the drop, I dropped my SRT4 and the ride quality deteriorated so horribly I swore I'd never do it again to any other car.

By the way, after I finish blacking out the windows, which would look better: red or black? I think black looks meaner, but having had black cars before I know what a pain they are. The red is really "arresting," pardon the pun.

Ya you gotta have that body color insert. Looks too funny with the big black plastic strip. Same goes for the regular 07 Mazda 3, it just looks funny.

Yea, I put the chromies on because Ballard is into chrome. Ballard, the body color strip I'm talking about is behind the front license plate.

I find it ironic that you care so much about looks....then you consider that ugly dodge? I'm guessing you do not like being laughed at? Buy that dodge and you probably will be.

I'd be willing to bet that the interior and overall build quality of the ms3 will surpass your gto, and that dodge will be the worse of the 3.

I say you go with the SRT-4, it will give people that "WOW" look. The MS3 is much to tame for you, your not going to like it.

here's what it would look like with no drop, just rims (not too bad)

Nate, thanks.

I gotta tell you your pics show this car off better than any pics I've seen anywhere else, including Mazda's web site.

I am really rethinking the Dodge after noticing how high off the ground it is...this really is a "crossover" SUV as opposed to being a real sports car. I don't want to be "noticed" by driving an ugly car! I'd rather be anonymous in a Honda Accord than being noticed for the wrong reasons. The poster who said the Caliper looked good from some angles and hideous from others is really right. I KNOW the interior will be no where near as nice as the MS3.

I also am in agreement that the MS3 will, overall, be a better vehicle. If you look over my list of preowned and current cars, only 2 are American--the GTO and the 'Vette, so I do have a preference for "foreign" cars, which saddens me...but when I'm dropping thousands for a car, I'm looking for the best vehicle for the money out there.

For those that think the MS3 will not "do it for me," you're probably right, but it's not the car's problem, it's mine.

To my friend Newf, comparing the build quality of the GT0 to a car that's yet to hit US showrooms seems useless. Why diss my car? The GTO and the MS3 are completely different cars, as different as day and night. Instead of meaningless comparisons, why not acknowlegde that they're both great cars?

I'm probably in the wrong thread, since I have already ordered a plain-jane NA 3s Touring, BUT I have been away for a couple of weeks and am itching to spout off on anything, so here goes:

Sounds like you are really into "the look", which is opposite of me. I would much rather have a wolf in sheeps clothing than the other way around. I know my 3 will be a sheep in sheep's clothing, but the power will be sufficient after a few mods, and the mileage will be better. Also, it almost didn't bust my personal $20k limit.

Bottom line is: If you want the big macho look, then the Dodge probably beats the MS3. If you are looking for overall quality, the MS3 is probably the better choice. Hey, if the don't see you coming, your arrival will be more of a surprise.
