MS3 Backfire?

Hey guys ... hard launch at the drag today and as soon as i let in the clutch I heard a BANG BANG. Scared the living daylights outta me. Has this happened to anyone? I was so concerned I broke something... car seems to run fine after....

Is there anything I should check drivetrain that may have gone?? I'm relatively knew at this so wouldn't even know where to look

what happens is that when u let off the gas, little particles of unburnt fuel leave the cylinders and go into the exhaust stream where they contact the hot exhaust and exhaust gases and explode in the exhaust

not enough to break anything just enough to make a big noise lol
if your running rich enough u can actually shoot flames out of ur exhaust, i dont think the MS3's run THAT rich though
 
HAHAHA happens to me too from time to time.
The other day I did a quick sprint and it popped louder than I thought, kinda scared me ^-^ hehe

Your kidding right, all turbo cars should shoot flames, thats part of the fun. Actually I recently switched maps on my AccessPort. This map is faster than the last one, it holds more boost and is a little leaner. The one thing I really miss about the previous map is shooting flames when upshifting. This map does but very rarely.
 
No I do not. Are you from an emissions state? The other day I saw a built STi shooting flameballs 3 feet around. My car shoots much smaller cones.
 
yea im from NC we have some pretty strict laws, normally a 20 on the dash will do it

but flames....i might need to open another credit card lol
 
thanks guys just glad to know scared the crap outta me ... i literally s*** my pants on the line I slowly rolled forward looking in the mirror going okay where's the metal on the ground ???

here's the kicker the damn tech at my mazda dealer that I like to bring it too was in line to run literally right behind me in his civic ... it goes bang bang and i go s*** they'll really fix something now (yupnope)

My only mod is the cobb sri ... other than that I'm basicaly stock

I backfire. I have a tbe with 1 high flowing cat. I cant almost do it on command. from 1st to 2nd it goes pop. I have yet to get someone shoot some videos at night while doin that to see if flames comes out. I'm runnin rich....comepare to a forum member here anyways. he got stock exhaust, AP, fmic and his afr is 11.5.....we logged my car the other day and mine's reading 10.x Do you guys think I can gain more power leaning it out with an AP? cause it'd be nice to have 300whp.

The flame would probably not make it past the cat.

I also have the AccessPort. I really like my current stage 2 MSF map v102. It holds a nice solid 18 PSI with AFRs in the mid 11s. I put my stock map on after not using it for few months last night. It was not very good, 14.5 PSI low 10s AFR, and tons of knock retard. I went out on the highway and the cold weather boost cut was back. I would hate to go back to the stock map and have to deal with all that stuff again.I highly reccomend you try out the AccessPORT.

will do. how important is the denso spark plugs when having AP? I see on their webiste they suggest having them.
 
I don't have them yet, I actually went searching for them locally today. Nobody carries them, I'll probably order them off the internet. My car has run fine with the stockers, however I think it is a good idea to follow Cobb's advice and install the denso 1 step colder plugs.
 
My turbo rx2 w/ 13b would shoot flames several feet when really romping on it. After a 1/4 mile blast or 2 it would literally make the entire exhaust glow red and white in places. scary stuff :)
 
I brought the car into my service dept in (Shrewsbury, MA the team there is real accommodating for anyone who's interested) and asked them to look into it since it was in for oil and the works... anyways after inspecting the front end and tranny and not finding anything unusual they told me it most likely was most likely a backfire into the intake manifold and the bpv opened under the pressure build up. Said it could have been from bad gas/moisture in the gas especially when it heats up under serious load such as launching. I have been using "less expensive" gas the last month or so if that had any affect on it.
